What an awesome shooting range. It's only $6 to enter the range. Make sure your weapons are not loaded and the chamber is open so that they can inspect them when you enter. Also make sure you have eye and ear protection. They do have some loaners, but it's best to bring your own. There are 3 ranges. First is the shotgun range where you can shoot skeet. They charge you $5 for each box of shells you plan on shooting. That covers the cost of the skeet. Second is the 100 yard rifle range. You can set up paper targets at any range up to 100 yards. Also they have steel targets set up at 100 yards. You can shoot rifles and shotgun slugs here. Lastly is the pistol range which is 25 yards. Again you can set up paper targets at any distance. Make sure to bring your own paper targets. They provide the boards and staple guns. Also there are a few steel targets to shoot. There is a little walking from your car to where you enter, so you might want to bring a wagon to carry your stuff. Also bring some water, because there is nothing to buy here. The Honey Island Shooting Range is a great place to shoot rifles and handguns. Located within the wildlife management area, there is a 100 yard rifle range, 25 yard pistol range and an area to shoot clays. The rifle range has at least 25 lanes and can handle anything up to, and including a .50 cal. The pistol range has some small steel targets for .22 but can handle all pistol calibers. All types of people use this range. The range masters are all volunteer and run a very safe range. It only costs $6 to shoot all day, but there are a few things you must know. Since this range is located on a WMA, you must have a La hunting or fishing license to enter the WMA. If you don't have one, stop at Wal Mart in Slidell and buy a cane pole license for $2.50. That is the cheapest license you can buy if all you need it for is the range. Bring your own eye and ear protection, but they will probably have some to lend you. The range is only open Fri-Sun and gets very busy on Saturday. If it is the summer time, bring mosquito repellent. If not, you will die. Hands down the best shooting range within an hour of New Orleans. Even if range fees were not a wonderfully affordable $6, this would be the place to go. The range is spacious, with separate pistol, rifle, and shotgun/trap shooting areas. Range officers are attentive and numerous, and always happy to help new shooters (and keep everyone safe). They have always been exceptionally polite and professional. This range does not have a problem with firing quickly, so long as you are doing so safely and are in control--no "one second between shot" rule. The range has steel targets on the pistol and rifle lines, as well as well maintained target stands. Paper targets are available for purchase, but there is no on-site shop to buy ammo, so it's worth a stop at Academy on the way. read more

This was my first visit to a real rifle range since my time in the military as I usually shoot rifles on a range set up on my family's land. They do have an expansive variety of range options here with pistol, rifle and shotgun clays to choose from. This place was much more popular than I thought it would be and even though I arrived shortly after they opened most of the lanes were almost all taken. I have to admit I was a tad disappointed that the rifle range only went out to 100 yards as in rifle qualification in the army we had to shoot out to 300 meters and I like to go out much farther depending on what I'm shooting. They have steel gongs set up at 100 yards and then you can set up your own targets at 100 and 25 yards. I also noted that some people on the rifle range were also using their handguns along with their rifles so I guess you can practice with both if you choose the rifle range option. The great thing about this place is that the cost is only $6 (plus you have to have a valid LA hunting or fishing license of some type as the range in in a Wildlife Management Area and the LA Fish & Wildlife Officers LOVE to ticket people at the range that don't have such licenses as you are ONLY allowed in this WMA area if you have such a license). There is some check in stuff at the entrance to the WMA but in small print once you read it the information tells you that if you are just going to the range you don't need to check in or do anything at this entrance and just to check in at the range. The range is down a long dirt road that is full of mud puddles so you might want to choose to make this trip in a 4x4 but I saw plenty of tiny little cars that made the journey fine. The range officers here are fantastic and all very experienced folks that run a very safe and orderly range. The biggest downfall of the very safe and orderly range is that it is an extremely painful place to try and zero a rifle as the range goes hot for about 30 minutes at a time so for an initial zero and then refining your zero that makes it a very long wait in between times to really check out your groups unless you have some great optics with you. I kind of wish they would maybe add a new range area for people that need to do initial zero that has a faster turn around time. There was a wide and interesting variety of weapons being fired and lots of friendly and interesting folks out here so if you've already gotten your zero you can have a great time out here but doing an initial iron sight zero is very time consuming. You need to pretty much pack in everything you need here so make sure to have your firearms unloaded and ready to be checked at the entrance, cash for entry fee, ammo, targets, eye and ear protection along with any snacks or beverages you might wish to have as this is a very Spartan and simply furnished place with only port-a-potties. Keep it safe and have fun exercising your 2nd Amendment rights! read more

This place is a BLAST! Get here early, they fill up quick when the weather is nice or during hunting season. Range officers are always nice. 100 yard rifle range and a 25 yard pistol range available. Steel gongs at the 100 yard line on the rifle range. Lots of steel plates on the pistol range and there's a few lanes reserved strictly for rimfire with some silhouettes for the kids to shoot at. Primitive restroom facilities... port-a-lets only. Bring your own ammo and targets, eye and ear protection ... oh, and your firearms also. If you forget your safety gear, they have some earplugs and glasses you can borrow. They just don't give out ammo and targets, but you can buy targets there. There's also a shotgun range where you can shoot clay targets for an additional cost. Cost is $6 and you can shoot all freaking day if you'd like. You also have to possess either a hunting or fishing license issued by the state of Louisiana. This is not the range rules, this is the state's rules. The range is located on a state wildlife management area and this is the rule. Even if you just want to drive through the WMA, technically you need a license. This does not apply to those under 16. Also, you do not have to pay $6 for anyone under 16 either. The range is only open to the public on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Check their website before you head there just in case it is closed. The area floods and if the Pearl River reaches over 17' they shut the range down. read more
