The craved wood staircases, the built for the ages book coves, and the wooden floors that seem to speak. But the library has two other wonderful surprises. The up-to-date collection of books, magazines, and other publications. The locals must love this place as I, a visitor, immediately loved it. Last but not least is the Art collection. The Library itself has several well-placed paintings that blend in with the furniture and neighboring books. The separate Art collection, in a separate climate-controlled room, was a wonderful well-thought-out collection of masterpieces. As a frequent art museum visitor, especially in my hometown of Houston Texas, I was surprised to find the same artist's work here in St Johnsbury as in the art museum in the 4th largest city, especially in the U.S. The Athenarum's stated mission "is to promote life-long learning through art, literature and information services, and to preserve its National Historic Landmark building, art collection, and furnishings." I came across the information about the statue in my research when I was planning a Santa's village weekend. I then knew I was going to Rey and make a sighting happened. Saturday morning. 3 inches of snow on the ground and our cabin has no breakfast. Crum Bum (bakery) hit my radar. I parked directly across the street from Crum and I saw the Polyanna Gateway! Then I thought, where is the statue and just beyond my husband's truck, there she was! It was meant to be! I happily went up the large step, took a photo of her and then us together. I then sent the photos to my Mom!

This jubilant statue of Pollyanna has her arms flung wide and her face to the sun ready to embrace the day. Located on the front lawn of the library, the parking lot is behind the building or park in town and walk over. Across the street is the Pollyanna Gateway which is a pedestrian stairway with a piano on the sidewalk at the top for anyone to play and colorful umbrellas overhead. At the bottom of the staircase is a public mural project. Littleton, NH is a cute little town with shops and restaurants to visit while in the area. A nice stop along the way.

It's a short 15-minute trail to the observation deck. you need to climb 3 stories height stairs to reach the top. on a clear day, you can see part of Canada (if you figure out where it is :P ), and neighboring states. I just took this opportunity to take some zoom-in fall photos. it was too windy, but the 360-degree view was totally worth it. it has an antenna on it, so there is a caution board, do not try to climb it.

The kids section in the basement has a puppet stage, an area to listen to books on cd and both a magic school bus and a fire truck to ride in. This in addition of a really excellent book collection including displays of books featuring the latest trends which in this case was PokemonGo and comics. We came in for a stop in the clean bathrooms and stayed for over an hour.

the post mistress needs to have retired several years ago - she is surly to both customers and…read morestaff. she has a reputation throughout several surrounding towns, from customers, as being unkind, unhelpful, and going out of her way to avoid doing work, always blaming customers and staff for being in the wrong. staff try to work around her, and i have seen several staff leave their positions to avoid working with her. she is only concerned with being sure the nitpicky details of rules are followed, and never on helping customers or staff. i've watched this happen over the course of almost 5 years.
