It's spacious, airy and light. There's a good selection of books but also a puzzle table, games, kids area, a scavenger hunt for kids, and free wifi with no login needed. The craved wood staircases, the built for the ages book coves, and the wooden floors that seem to speak. But the library has two other wonderful surprises. The up-to-date collection of books, magazines, and other publications. The locals must love this place as I, a visitor, immediately loved it. Last but not least is the Art collection. The Library itself has several well-placed paintings that blend in with the furniture and neighboring books. The separate Art collection, in a separate climate-controlled room, was a wonderful well-thought-out collection of masterpieces. As a frequent art museum visitor, especially in my hometown of Houston Texas, I was surprised to find the same artist's work here in St Johnsbury as in the art museum in the 4th largest city, especially in the U.S. The Athenarum's stated mission "is to promote life-long learning through art, literature and information services, and to preserve its National Historic Landmark building, art collection, and furnishings." We're fond of cookbooks, and they have a bunch. It feels cozy like we think a used store ought to feel, and we were very pleased to make our reacquaintance with it recently. And yes, it is open during the pandemic, at least as of the time of our review.

This one is exceptionally cute & worthy of adoration. My partner grew up in this area and reports that he spent many hours ensconced in the upper level window. These days, they've doubled the small footprint with a new addition but maintained the same quaint style and the warm, local vibe. Buy a book on the sidewalk or check or the activities- you'll be glad you stopped by to visit the "real" heart of North Conway.

As a visitor to the area, my friends and I went to the library seeking a quiet, local place to have…read morea zoom meeting. When we walked into the library we approached the front desk and asked where in the library would be the best place for a private zoom call. She stated that there is the conference room that was full of people, but that there might be a free room upstairs, but we weren't able to reserve anything. She said we could take a look or we could wait for the general manager to speak with us. We decided to just go upstairs and look for a room. As was predicted, the conference room was full of people, but the open teen room was empty and the area near the computers was free. Since we both had to take zoom calls, my friend and I separated and went into different rooms. I sat in the room for about 30 minutes until my call began and then started it. As soon as my call begins Angela, the Executive Director, storms in yelling at me to leave the teen room. I told her yes, but that I needed a moment to gather my things. She continued to berate me and follow me to another area of the library. There she told me that my computer was too loud,l. I asked her where she would suggest we go and she asked me to leave the library or she would call the police. It should be noted at this point that I am a woman of color. I encouraged her to call the police because I hadn't done anything wrong. As a fellow Director of a major nonprofit institution, I am saddened deeply that as I was trying to absorb the culture of this beautiful place I was met with bigotry and intolerance. As my friends departed all we could think about was the sour taste we all now have. We hope to return one day when all people are treated with kindness and respect.
