This year's and…read morelast year's shows have been happening in the Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort Kou Ballroom. All the vendors and experts are from Hawaii too - so as you can guess, it's not that big, as no one is flying in from mainland or overseas, but it's got a bit of everything and the folks are friendly and are happy to share their knowledge with other gem enthusiasts! It's my first time at this show so I didn't know what to expect. It's definitely smaller than what I've been to. There were maybe around 15 vendors? But each vendor had their own niche - fossils, meteorites, cut loose gemstones, jewelry, amber with trapped insects, rare specimens, polished crystals, etc. the show had a bit of everything and the prices were actually reasonable! It's a good, quick dose of mineral exposure without having to fly to Tucson. The folks were very friendly and some were so nice to give out little free gifts for the Keiki. The ladies at the very front gave my son a Dalmatian jasper. He saw the black spotted rock and immediately picked it out. It's also heart-shaped! If you're curious what a gem show is like, this is a good place to start as admission is free and they validate parking for just $10 for pretty much half day. (But the hotel parking structure is terrible, so tight it can't have 2 cars turning into and out of the ramp at the same time.) It's also great to see what these local folks have to offer. Also, you got to see the minerals found in Hawaii on display! There's sulfur from Kilauea, 2 olivine specimens from Hualalai, and a beautiful calcite cluster of crystals from O'ahu!

This is a small, intimate theater on the Chaminade University campus in Honolulu. Enter the…read moregrounds (shared with St. Louis High School) via Waialae Avenue, go up the hill, and around until you're facing the entrance. Look for the small blue sign with white wording. When we went for a production of "Proof", (a play by David Auburn) by the All the World's a Stage Theatre Company, there were less than 50 seats. No photography was allowed. There is no box office for tickets. There was a reception table outside of the main entrance. The restroom was in a different building and down the hall. During intermission, there was a table set up outside with soft drinks, chips, and crackers. Everything was priced at a dollar each. The main theater on campus is Mamiya Theater. There's a big difference! We had to use a map to find this theater because the personnel at Mamiya Theater didn't know the location and weren't aware of Loo Theatre's existence. Luckily, a security guard drove by and pointed us in the right direction. There also was a gentleman outside to welcome the audience!

I purchased tickets through the brownpapertickets.com site ahead of time and could pick them up at will call outside the theater night of the show. When I think of the theater at Chaminade University, I immediately think of Mamiya Theater! And that's exactly what I kept thinking when I purchased tickets to see this, but evening of the play, I parked right in front of Mamiya then went to stand in line at Mamiya Theater to pick up my will call tickets (which took a really long time for some reason for just 3 ppl in line) only to find out we're not at the right theater! Eeks! Nadine C. and I searched Yelp but there was no listing for any Loo Theater so we Googled it & found Chaminade University maps. Turns out Nadine is really great at using maps & simply walked us across the street in the Ewa direction then turned left toward the Waialae Ave./ocean direction onto the front side of the block. On the way, we called to a security guard who confirmed we were headed in the right direction. Yay! A short way down, we saw a theater attendant guy standing outside the building walkway near a medium-blue sign. He confirmed we were headed in the right direction, just take a left down the walkway (mountain direction). After taking photos to post to Yelp, we walked up the walkway, checked in with another attendant at a check-in table (no tickets; she checked for my name on her list) & she handed us programs for the play. EASIEST WAY TO FIND LOO THEATER! Lol: From Waialae Ave, drive up toward Chaminade University & park right in front in the parking stalls at the Y. Facing mountain side, you'll see a rock wall with a break in the middle for a short stair going thru a wide, perpendicular row of buildings. (No open stalls? Drive up past the guard shack, take a lft, park in one of the yellow-lined stalls. Park more Ewa than Diamond Head if you're going to Loo/Mamiya Theater or park along the Ewa perimeter of the campus (drive to the end of that road).) At top of the stairs, see a blue sign that says: Loo Theater. Walk right of the sign, take the path past the metal stairs of the bldg to the right, come to a short wall, follow the wall to the right, and on the left you'll see an entrance way into Loo Theater. Got it?! :D Call me if you're lost! :D WHAT'S INSIDE! Nice, tidy theater! Not spacious and not too cramped. Nice air-conditioned comfort. Nothing smells. No musty odors. There's a lighting management post at the entrance in the walkway into the theater. The theater is surprisingly small. It seems to be part of the rest of the building to the right. The walls are draped in thick-looking black material. The seating is plush, new-looking & -feeling, & the seats are tiered about 8 seats per row for 6 rows with a break between each row. They should put a short step-up to the last two rows. It's somewhat of a reach unless you've got longer legs. The stage this night was at the far end of the entrance. It was narrow & limited both ways. The actors were able to use the space at front & along the walkway out the door as their stage. To the right of the stage is a prop door that served as the play's onstage in & out door. View from the seating in the back rows is okay but if you're short like me or shorter, then you might want to sit closer front. RESTROOMS, please!? During intermission, walk outside back down the walkway to the blue sign, take a left down another walkway, take the stairs going up left into the next building, down the hall past the carpeted area, & find both Restrooms on the right. To return, just backtrack! SNACKS! Eating is not allowed inside. They served $1 drink & snacks outside the theater down the stairs into the patio area on the far left. CURTAINS UP! After intermission, they'll start soon as everyone is back in their seats! Talk about cozy! What service! They remembered we had gone to the restroom! They waited for our return! Happy Birthday, Rachael! :D It was the main actress' birthday & all were invited to delicious cake & strawberries after the play. We lucked out! :D WALKING BACK TO OUR CARS! The campus is not too huge so the way back to our cars especially mine in front of Mamiya Theater was not too far. WHAT I THOUGHT!? Cute! Small! Nice! Restroom is far! It's probably a great place for those plays that don't require very much space & where the audience might be more limited. In this case, the play we saw was a bit intense & really different from happy-go-lucky ones. Go early! If you're not sure where this theater is, go early like we did, 6:30pm for the 7:30pm showing. Seats were first come first served for this show; you might want seats at the front. Fun to find places not yet listed on Yelp! I'll never forget where this little gem is located! The main show was a mix of comedy sketches and YouTube videos, but the wow factor here was the musical duo Sheen. (or is it Shean ?). I looked for their FB page but I could not find them, these two singers made my night. If I ever have a venue where I need music I will guarantee hunt these 2 down! Their covers blew away the original singers. This event was a kick off for fundraising the 2015 Sketch Comedy Festival coming this March at the Honolulu Museum of Arts.

It was great having special guest Fernando Pacheco (former Jimmy Eats World band member and currently Pimpbot). I did not laugh as much as I hoped but there were some funny moments. The actors acted really well. I wished that there were less youtube videos because I had seen some of them before, but it was still good to watch. The music duo SHEAN was really good! The girl sings very well and has a really good voice. The guy plays the guitar well and knows how to sing! I wish them the best of luck. Free pupus and drinks were on hand. I chose water and grapes since I'm still dieting. I was happy to find healthy choices! What a great kick off event and good luck to Hawaii Sketch Comedy!

Who is crazy enough to run a 5k in costumes? This family is! Well I thought we were gonna walk so…read moreI wore my boots. But my kids were so proud of their costumes that they decided to run it. Running in a cape is a challenge. My middle son had his arms up almost the whole time while I tried my best to hold my cape to my body. The Deets: This 5 K happens at Ala Moana Beach Park. Participants chase bananas and a strawberry around. They are Hawaii's own KHON news anchors and they bring a lot of enthusiasm to the crowd. Especially Kelly, she was pumped from beginning to end. There are awesome prizes to be won. I can't believe how generous Jamba Juice is. 1st Place winners get Jamba Juice for a WHOLE YEAR. 2nd Place gets 26 Jamba Juice coupons. 3rd Place gets 12 coupons. Not just for 3 people... For each age division. There is a male and a woman division. Each participant got a t-shirt and a medal. Keiki Run: After the 5K my kids still had the energy to run the keiki run. The keiki run is 500 meters. This Year: They had a handful of different activities to enjoy such as face painting, photo booth, keiki prints, bounce house, the Yelp booth, and more. Costume contest: Alaska airlines gave a trip for 2 to anywhere they fly. We tried our luck at the costume contest, we placed 2nd. Even though we didn't win the grand prize it was well worth it. My kids had so much fun wearing their costumes during the race. They enjoyed hearing their fruit being cheered on as we ran. I know this memory will forever be etched in their minds. Jamba offers a year of free smoothies to the first male and female finisher in each age category, categories are every 5 years between 12-80. After the race, bananas and smoothies were waiting for everyone. T-shirts and medals were given out to all finishers but they did run out of medals for the keiki race and ask adults to donate their medals back to the kids, which we both did after we took a picture with the medals. Plenty of free parking all around Ala Moana Beach Park. It was a truly great morning, so lucky we live HI!

Bank of Hawaii were giving out free popcorn with the option of li hing mui powder. They also had free giveaways to both Vegas & China. The photo booths were cool. You could take pictures of the Great Wall background or another background of a famous bridge in China and another picture taking display where you could wear a Panda head and snap away. They had a performance stage where they hosted a talent show. This marks the 11th annual of the Chinese festival. I would attend to this event again next year.

Today is International Women's Day and I'm with my bestie who's been with me through thick and thin coincidence...I don't think so and going to see a performance by a woman who's music I've grown up listening to Janet Jackson's Together Againis the perfect way to spend our evening as it's been several months since we last spent some time together as our busy lives takes the front seat it is now our turn to put ourselves first tonight. Though there was no opening act Janet did all my favorite songs and hearing them just brings goosebumps and memories back in the days, what a moment to share with my bestie which gave us time to laugh, smile and just be ourselves...priceless!
