In its final year, the Hayground Windmill was the last functional windmill on all of Long Island. After temporarily functioning as a tearoom, this windmill became the home and studio of artist, Agnes Pelton. Hayground Windmill was then moved by ox-cart to its present location as part of the Dowling estate in 1950 and declared a National Historic Building in 1978. We found this windmill with scaffolding, so it wasn't easy to photograph it, but ... what was really interesting to me is that when we drove right up to the gated estate where this windmill sits, the gate automatically opened. I felt kind of strange driving right onto private property, but actually, we had to do so in order to turn our car around. We stopped long enough to photograph the scaffolded windmill and then drove off. We didn't want to overstay our welcome... if, in fact, we were even welcome. But the gates opened up for us, sooooooooooo...

The staff is very nice and willing to help. I recommend stopping in to see what they have when ever you are out east on Long Island. It is definitely worth the trip!

Not complaining, though, cuz I still got to see another windmill, although I don't know the name of this windmill. Supposedly, there are 11 windmills peppered throughout the Hamptons, and I saw 3 of them. Now that I'm home and was trying to match my photos with the windmill names, that's when I learned that more than 3 windmills exist, so I'll have to hunt them down next time I'm in the Hamptons. The entire business district of the whaling port and writer's colony is listed as Sag Harbor Village District on the National Register of Historic Places. Husband and I were having an appetizer and cocktails at an upscale restaurant called Dopo La Spiiaggia when we noticed the park across the street. When we were done we took a stroll through the memorial park. It's a clean safe park where families were riding bikes, exercising, playing frisbee, having picnics and casually walking and chatting. The marina right on the edge of the park is peaceful, tranquil and beautiful. This village is very dog friendly but pets are not allowed in this park and I am confessed as to why not. I love and appreciate Sag Harbor, it has a very impressive history.

It was erected by the citizens of Sag Harbor in 1966 as an historic memorial to the whaling industry. The original was constructed in 1760 and actually stood 50 feet west of this site. Even though this is not the original windmill, it still looks like one and qualifies in MY mind as a bonafide windmill... and served as a good excuse for me to take photos !!

I was informed that next year the museum will also house Gerson's paintings. I thought it was a world class museum and one of the best cultural options in the area. The Collection and gardens are open to the public, free of charge, every summer from Memorial Day to Labor Day, Saturdays and Sundays, from 1 PM to 4 PM.
