Talk about going above and beyond. I purchased a class for my mom (& myself) as a gift and was blown away when we showed up. It wasn't cheap, but I knew we were receiving a full calligraphy set of tools included. However, Kim made the class worth every penny. First- The classes are in the Speak Easy, aka the coolest co-working space around. The walls in our room were all chalk and she had drawn beautiful instructions and her logo on the wall. There was a table of interesting sparkling sodas, colorful macaroons, and water. Next- We found our seat. The tables were decorated with black tablecloths, fresh flowers, our calligraphy supplies, and a cute napkin with a macaroon with our name on it. The personalized place settings were adorable and really got us excited for the class. Calligraphy: Easier to learn than I thought it would be. Kim broke down each letter and had a projector so that everyone could see what she was doing clearly. I feel confident that I can use a calligraphy pen now and can do each letter and number. However, I'm still not great with putting the letters together to actually make words look good (there's an advanced class for that), but because I have the basics (and now the supplies), I can practice that in my own time. There were almost twenty people in the class and each class always sells out, so get tickets in advance. Kim exemplified such professionalism and personality, which made the class a perfect afternoon retreat. Kim is hilarious and really interacted with the class. Such a fun skill to learn!

The 2 hour Calligraphy class was a very fun, informative & challenging course (only because we wanted it to be perfect). Kimberly Shrack who teaches & owns Hoopla Letters was a great instructor, she makes it look so easy so there is hope for all of us. Very patient with her class. The Newton venue was a perfect classroom setting. #hooplaletters hooplaletters.com

Kim is SO great. Her Manayunk Calligraphy workshops are educational, fun, and easy going. There is no pressure for perfection. These workshops are great for an afternoon with the girls, or if you are a bride wanting to address your own invites! The class teaches you basic calligraphy strokes and transitions into the English alphabet. All the fundamentals are taught by Kim and customized by your own style. I would highly recommend taking her classes. Kim is amazing!!

We signed up for the beginners night class from 7-9PM. It was $45 a person which included 2 of 3 pieces you make. I'm not gonna lie, we were both pretty nervous. Neither of us had ever taken a pottery class and we knew we were going to be bad at it. Turns out, we were pretty good!! And all 3 pots were suitable for glazing. The first 45 minutes to an hour is a guided instruction, then the last hour we are free to throw our other 2 balls of clay with the help of the instructor whenever we needed her. Makes for a good date night or I could see a bachelorette party too. Highly recommend this unique experience.

She had them start out with decorating goody bags and then introduced tracing the outline, tracing each parts and then gently guiding them towards the painting the colors in. She and her helper did their best to help kids out with the tracing and outlining. She kept the kids very engaged and as the canvas dried she made an air dry clay unicorn horn with them. Of course every 6 year old wants to put various colored crystals on their unicorn horns! As everything was drying she did a small song/dance party for the kids. ArtMix is an Indianapolis-based non-profit organization that has been in existence since I was a kid in school, though it began life as Very Special Arts. They have four core programs, a variety of special projects, and quite a few opportunities to support them ranging from visiting their art gallery to joining them for First Fridays and others. As they note on their website, in the early days of public education for those with disabilities it was uncommon for us to be integrated into regular classrooms. An organization like this was used to fill in that gap. While I was often discouraged from creativity, this was an organization that encouraged it. The fact that I'm now a published writer, film critic, producer, and occasional actor is proof positive of how positive their influence can be. It should be noted that shopping in their gallery is by appointment only. Like a lot of non-profits, they have a small staff. The core programs for ArtMix include urban artisans, entrepreneur artisans, community classes, and artists-in-residence. In terms of accessibility, despite being in a challenging building they do well with ramps at the back entrance (and free parking in the back lot). The building itself is locked - there's a call box that you'll use (again, they request appointments). First Friday events are cool, the gallery is wonderful (and does support artists with disabilities. Yay.). I'm very pleased with this organization. It's only gotten better over the years. While I'm no longer that student sitting in a classroom, ArtMix reaches out even more these days and is truly a community organization. If you've never checked them out, I definitely recommend it.
