The school offers many special classes (our kids' favorite was cooking class, from a real chef!) They really create a community for the families, and have many special traditions and events throughout the year. They also offer a great summer camp program that is very well run and convenient. The leadership team is excellent to work with and they run a tight ship. I wish we could stay there forever! But they have given our kids an excellent social and academic foundation for their elementary years.

This is a sleepy little suburb in the north part of Boston which doesn't have too much going on but a couple of cool bubble tea shops in the nice little Center area, and it's a little bit removed from the beach Town Beauty but also the good luck of the western suburbs like Cambridge and Allston. This is a quiet and cool little area to the North of Boston which is not far from Summerville and not far from Revere and a little bit further away from Cambridge and Austin and all of that stuff. So it's kind of hard to get to. But if you do come up here there are a few cool restaurants, and some nice bubble tea shops, and I definitely enjoyed myself up here and met some nice people. And if you're not female... you're Male den.

Parking is a big problem in this city, too many high rises, too many illegal tenants / rooming houses. I know they try hard, but $25 and $50 parking tickets are given out like candy. They have destroyed small businesses in the smaller squares of the city and forced people to go elsewhere. Maplewood square is vicious, there's plenty of places to get your hair done, buy local meats, bank and have a drink if you want. They have however started to put up 15 minute parking spots, this helps one and only one business and I wont mention who that is. Growing up in this area, this square use to have 2 of everything, 2 banks, Maplewood Savings and Malden Trust, 2 drug stores, Aucella and Maplewood (both gone), 2 dry cleaners, 2 convenience stores Essex farms and Sunnyhurst, 2 Lawyers, 2 insurance agencies, you get the gist, it was the square of 2's now it's just a bunch of vacant stores, and the ones that have survived and the patrons who go there are paying the price, that price by the way is $25 to $50 parking tickets. I gave up and sadly a few others are about to. I don't mind parking tickets, as long as they are evenly distributing them throughout the city, but $25 is a lot of money and $50 can be the difference between someone being able to afford groceries for their family. I'm not sure what the solution is, but this is certainly a problem. So be careful where you shop, pay attention to the signs that seem to be changing week to week and know that there are ticket givers, that favor certain store owners. The majority of the teachers have master degrees from Boston College and are excellent teachers. The staff and other educators are meticulously chosen and contribute to the school at the highest level. St. John School is only Catholic elementary school (Age 2 - 6th grade) in the heart of Boston proper and is conveniently located in the North End - and close to all major employers for parents to consider. Many families attend from East Boston, Medford, Revere, Saugus and many Boston neighborhoods. The students are out-performing BPS schools on MAP testing and exceptionally prepared for junior high. The 6th grade students interested in exam schools opt in to tutoring and prep for the fall exams and outperform their peers in many instances. The school community is bar none the best. Families have left SJS and returned because the community of teachers, staff, parents, grandparents, and extended family are exceptional. You cannot find this level of care and community anywhere else! This is also the most affordable private school option for many families who want to instill a Catholic education. All the students participate in what's called the Tower Garden. Ms. Shay created a hydroponic garden that is tended by each class over the course of the year. After the greens and veggies are harvested, they are hand delivered by students to different local non profit organizations like St. Anthony's Shrine and ABCD. Having the option of afterschool from 2:30 pm - 6pm plus a variety of enrichment classes and music lessons, makes this school even more attractive and special. Tours are provided by appointment all year round. And parents are always willing to share their experiences. I should note that a 2 year old program begins in September. The last remaining Catholic school in Boston proper one understands how it is still here 120 years later, it leads in educational programming from Greek-Latin Roots program, Scratch, Kahn Academy to language and arts. It is a wonderful place for any child to to attend from K3 to 8 - and for any family who is looking for a true sense of community. An excellent school on all levels!

Can I take a second to say how annoying Mr. Mirasolo is? I've put up with him for three years, and…read moresince we only have a few weeks left, I don't care how much trouble I get in for saying this, he's really obnoxious. We had to go to German class to 7B team and then to German again, only to find him there to make us go to the gym. Now i'm sitting with my legs crossed in the gym while people around us are playing volleyball, typing on my computer. I had to bring a clipboard so I could work on my paper stuff. This isn't the first time he's done this, either. Once in art class in 6th grade we had to finish an important project, and he took us to the gym so we couldn't do it. They're cutting so many teachers, and yet not him. That's stupid. Mr. Mirasolo is an incompetent substitute teacher beyond words. Now people literally have to duck their heads to avoid being hit by volleyballs. I've been quiet about him for so long, and now I'm just going to let everyone know what an obnoxious little schwein he can be. He could be worse, but he could also certainly be better. Last time he subbed for our German class, he never even showed up. We just handled ourselves and we were fine. And you know what? That was actually better than sitting doing my work in the gym. We were better off without him. When I complained about being in the gym, he said, "Oh, why are you so upset?" or something else along those lines in the most annoying way. Maybe I'll get in trouble for writing this, but I'm going to be honest and let everyone know just how fed up I am about being quiet about all the jerks in this world. The federal government is being awful, they're cutting a ton of teachers for Fiscal Year 2026, and I'm finally telling everyone. America is not great. It is being terrible. So this is what I think of you, Mr. Mirasolo, if you wanted to know my opinion of you after me silently being irked at you for all these years. I hope other people appreciate my rant.

Okay. Really. Who goes to Yelp to view a school system?…read more Our kids did well here and are headed in the right direction. Five stars for the whole system, no. But our elementary school was one of the best in the state (both in our personal experience and state rankings). The district has choice for grammar school, a brand new middle school and a high school undergoing a significant revitalization. Research it other places please, PLEASE.
