This is kind of an emotional review, but I do need to do this review because of this wonderful young attorney; Jess Smith at the law office of Hoover-Krepelka, LLP. I had a 45 year marriage that was coming to an end. I was a mess. My first attorney was so terrible that she was late 20 minutes to a court hearing and was completely unprepared to present me. She did not apologize to the judge or me for the delay. Needless to say, I let her go. My next attorney I hired; the office had a staff exodus en-mass. My 3rd attorney issue was straightened out and hired Jess Smith at H & K. I was hesitant because she was such a young attorney; the same age as my daughter. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This young woman saved me in so many ways. I will never be able to thank her enough for her emotional support and listening to some of my requests.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I'm sure they were not normal but what is in this situation. She was on top of every document, request, response which were vast in numbers. Because California is a no fault state for divorces I feel it can be very lopsided if one has not pursued a traditional career. I had taken care of financials, home and child raising. As a woman who gave up her career as a graphic artist. I raised our daughter to become a wonderful doctor. I wore about 50 other hats to help my husband, daughter, household to succeed. Unfortunately they don't issue college degrees or adjust pay for this service. Jess Smith helped me navigate the legal labyrinth with some of the best representation that a woman in my situation could have. I really do think she performed miracles. [[HIGHLIGHT]]She provided encouragement & the strength to fight for everything that I am entitled to, and perhaps more since I was 65 years old and had been with this man since I was 21 years old.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Conveniently he was laid off so he did not have to provide spousal support. Jess as a young attorney; I think had a lot to do with what she helped me to achieve since she was so fresh and had set no boundaries yet. I think this career choice can be a very difficult and I hope this young attorney realizes just how much she'll helps people like me. Jess Smith went toe to toe with the opposing seasoned attorney and actually showed much more skill at times. There were many times where she had to remind the opposing attorney about deadlines and responses times. I will be forever grateful to this young lady who is so brilliantly smart and helped me by representing my best interest and got me so much more than I would have ever hoped for. Keep in mind that I thought cat food was going to be on the menu in my retirement & I do not own a cat. Travis Krepelka is a very good family attorney. My business attorneys told me that the Santa Clara County Family Court system is widely corrupt. Travis helped me deal with a corrupt judge that was later dismissed from the family court system. He was ethical working with the court system, never called the judge on the carpet during the court hearings when he could have and kept things as cool as possible. He is one of the good guys in the family court system where there are so many bad actors. read more

While publishing a local magazine and working as a journalist , I was referred to Hoover Krepelka by an attorney writer for my publication. The referrer only knew Travis Krepelka did "pro bono " work for the local San Jose Jazz Festival so thought he would be a good guy. That referral was in 2013 and a decade later my divorce issues are still going and saw me lose two homes I had purchased and maintained over a 25 year marriage. I was sanctioned and fined of over $800k and incurred staggering losses that began with this firm. In 6 months Travis Krepelka botched a settlement he arranged with Rich Roggia that looked more like a bad play than a legal proceeding. That cost me $20k . Krepelka never lifted a finger to get discovery on the community farming businesses I started and ran over a 20 year marriage and I never got income from it or my half of the assets. Travis advised me to put rent money for our properties into attorney Brad Baugh's trust account which I never got my share of or an accounting of , which Krepelka knew would happen. Hoover Krepelka tried to put me into private judging with Michael Smith or Ed Berra without telling me what private judging was and the risks associated. I never undid the harm this firm did to me as they used my money to sponsor judge nights and nonprofits like WomenSV to grow their client list. The firm took my money when they knew I didn't have it. They never got me child support for the child I had care of 90% of the time. They never took up the issue that the child's father paid $8.84 in support one month as he took money from our businesses for himself and to pay his attorneys. Hoover Krepelka told me to drain my retirement accounts , advance my credit cards and borrow from friends and family to pay them , threatening to withdraw if I didn't. The firm created tax nightmares and lifetime harm that should not happen to any woman in Silicon Valley because of a divorce . The arbitration clause in their retainer agreement keeps folks from knowing about the claims against them In open court. Two years ago while I was working on a private judge story out on the sidewalk in front of their offices , they called the police trying to get me arrested. That is how this firm treats former clients. Hope this helps one person know they should conflict this firm out in their divorce case but never hire them to represent you, especially if you are a middle class mother dealing with a husband who has connections to attorneys, judges and paralegals in the family court network. And never agree to use a private judge or sign an arbitration clause unless you fully understand the risks. read more

I will preface this review with the fact that my case had a positive outcome, in that my divorce was granted after roughly 9 months. I was granted a divorce, largely due to the post-nuptial agreement that was already in place. In my initial consultation with Joy Diaz I indicated I did not want to have to sell my home in order to settle the divorce. She indicated it should be a pretty straightforward process since a post nuptial agreement was in place. The process was everything BUT straightforward. I have the following feedback: 1. Do your homework. Make sure your attorneys presents you with ALL of your options. The initial settlement package prepared by this law firm proposed selling my home, which I'd explicitly stated I didn't want to do. No one told me I had the option to buy out my ex's interest in the house. That was told to me by a friend. 2. Make sure you know who your legal representative is. Initially Joy was assigned as my attorney but as I started asking questions, they brought in another attorney. This meant I was paying double. Both sat on calls, both reviewed the documents, both charged for their time. 3. Keep track of the hours spent. Make sure you're being charged appropriately for meeting times. 4. Follow up on action items from any meetings you have with your attorney. There were multiple instances where I had to follow up to make sure things got done. I'm not sure if they just didn't take notes during our meetings or if they just had too much on their plate, either way, I had to stay on top of their actions to make sure they were completed. I felt like I was having to manage them in a way I didn't think should have been necessary considering how much I was paying them! 5. Lastly, advocate for yourself! If your gut is telling you not to do something the attorneys advise, stick to it! On more than one occasion, I felt like they wanted me to make a decision that would close out the case in a more timely manner even if it wasn't in my best interest. read more

I had worst experience ever with the attorney Sarah C. Stull, who is such an inefficient attorney in the area of divorce and family law. She could not even answer any of my questions during the client meeting. Stay away from this lawyer if you want to save your hard-earned money. She is efficient in dragging the client's case to at least 3 to 4 years for the sake of making more money from the clients without any legal help. The firm promoted her from Associate level to Senior Associate level with no idea of what she doing to the clients and to the firm really!! I would give them zero stars but the app won't let me. My experience with this firm started off great. They helped me get a bifurcation divorce. They were professional but pricey. Then the bogus billing started. They would switch the attorney on me sending me an email to inform me and bill me for the email. They would contact me for no reason and bill me and then the new attorney would have to get up to speed and bill me for that. This was all happening while I was in arbitration and had instructed them that I would contact them if needed. The worst part happened once I had the finally agreement with my ex. I sent my newest attorney the agreement told them to review it and as long as it was league to file it with the court to finish the divorce. Multiple emails and 5 months later and over $2000 in bogus billing zero paperwork had been completed and nothing for my divorce had been filed. I fired them and my ex's attorney took care of it in 2 weeks for $500. These guys are a scam. They don't care about you other than to milk you for every penny they can. Steer clear. They still owe me $2000. read more

What type of person do we want our attorney's to be? For me, integrity, communication ability, and legal knowledge, among other factors are key. Jim Hoover checks all those boxes, and more. I first met him about 3 years ago when I had a free consultation about amending spousal support. He provided some solid advice and a future game plan. Fast forward to present and I met with him again to discuss options and put together a plan moving forward. After hearing the details, Jim expressly said that I did not need to retain him and he provided some great advice on how to negotiate with my ex, and after doing so he typed up the agreement and I'm on my way. Very straight-forward. Jim has a great presence and communication style which immediately put me at ease. He's just a normal guy who happens to have a great legal mind and his integrity is awesome. He could have easily sold me on retaining his firm and battling it out with my ex in court which would have netted him eight to twelve thousand dollars over a year or more with no guarantee of success. He talked about the cost/benefit analysis and saw the big picture. Having said that, I had no doubts that if he needed to, Jim would do a great job fighting for his client in court, if needed. Jim is well connected in the legal community and serves as a fill-in judge in family court so those are pluses as well. Attorneys obviously cost a lot of money, but I found Jim to be more than fair with his time, and I'm confident that if I had to retain him there would be no issues in this area. Initially I would have given 5 stars. However after a bait and switch on a senior counsel for a junior mid-case, and the junior botched up on many details of the case (e.g. silly stuff got my name wrong, my kids name wrong, embarrassing), I had to let them go. The junior cost about 90% of the senior but had about 1/3 the value. Very expensive firm, especially considering I had to re-brief the new counsel on matters relating to the case, for a staffing change at their discetion. If you have a more senior counsel from them, keep them assigned, and can afford it, this is a good "large firm." If you don't have the funds or need to save for your retirement (bit of a joke sorry, or if you aren't in a fight with an ex with a really good lawyer), shop around. You'll get better results for a lot less money. E.g. here they'll charge you $30 for an email asking for status from you. read more

Hoover Krepelka Law is a law firm is quite an amazing law firm. Working as family law experts must be a challenge. When looking to work with family law experts, there are a few things one may be looking for; you want the most knowledgeable, you want an attorney who is experienced, and you want an attorney who will bill you fairly. In working with HK, I've found that they understand the legal process in family law, and will fight for what you deserve, and not waste your time trying to seek unreasonable requests. I came to HK law with a friend of mine who needed help. I was there for emotional support, and because she has asked for help with her finances. I went to an appointment with Jim Hoover, and was very impressed with his knowledge. It's no surprise, as the firm has been around since the early 60s, that he knew not only the legal answers my friend was looking for, but he also understood her, and what she was going through. In this appointment, Jim's experience led him to share with my friend that she may be dealing with some emotional support issues that may hinder her from getting the support she needed, and he was able to help her through it. In working with another friend who needed legal advice, I joined a friend in an appointment with Travis Krepelka. His experience with financial abuse was paramount in helping my friend decide how to move forward with her legal separation. Finally, legal counsel can be very costly. I appreciate that I felt like HK was looking out for my friends and their best interest, 100% of the time. They leverage their team, by sharing the work on their case with other associates. They keep the billing costs down. For example, you want the attorney to focus on your case, and the strategy... You don't want to pay an attorney their hourly rate to fill out a form for the court that a law clerk would be able to do for a fraction of the cost. They have experts in their office that they give work to in order to keep your billable time down. They asked for a deposit/retainer, which I understood was customary. A wise friend once told me that "the most expensive advice you can receive is bad advice, or even worse, no advice at all." In my experience with my friends, Hoover Krepelka has always more than paid for their work with strong results. If I have a friend, client, family member or colleague dealing with family law matters, Hoover Krepelka is always the first firm I think of, and it's where I would send them to get help. Jim Hoover will promise you the moon. I was referred to him. He said that 2 attorneys are assigned to each case so I got him and a second one. He said the second one would be taking 2/3 of the case and he 1/3. This was practically a full out lie. I never got a single email or phone call from him. And when the 3 of us met it was obvious he had just been updated! Some issues came up and I ended up leaving the firm (after many months of them very easily taking my money with their exorbitant rates) but with the understanding that these were issues out of my control and I could return to HooverKrepelka at any time. I called last week and then today with a few simple questions from when I was their client and didn't understand why nobody had called me back. I called again today and asked the legal assistant why nobody had called yet. He told me that Mr. Hoover would not be speaking with me now or moving forward. I didn't understand why and told the legal assistant that I thought Jim was being unfair. Apparently the legal assistant told this to Jim. Immediately I got an "alpha type male" e-mail straight from Jim and was told in so many words that I am no longer his counsel and I will not be his counsel again. (Meaning that even if I wanted to come back, I was not welcome). For me, he kept the reputation that many lawyers are known for. Egotistical, very very expensive, not compassionate at all, and basically just in it for himself. I would highly not recommend this firm with Jim Hoover at the helm as one of the partners. read more

It has only been since June 2020 that ethnic immigrants like myself could speak up against racism. I came to this law group because of their web site presentation of having a pension plan expert and the ability to handle complex litigation. I trusted in the elder Mr. Hoover his word in helping me with a difficult situation in which he knew the players. I was given a fraudulent contract with the name of the Pension Expert Lawyer who had already left some weeks prior. Then came the double billing meetings to discuss nothing with a rather newly graduated lawyer. It took some months to realize I had been duped into a situation where my retainer was being drained possibly to protect the white privileged politics of my Spousal Abuser and our well known Estate Planning Lawyer of Marriage. Once you tell your story they know who to call. I was stunned during Non-Binding Mandatory Fee Arbitration when I was mocked for being a domestic violence and sexual assault victim by Mr. Hoover. I was shocked by the dirty tactics used when a lawyer's duty to a client in terms of loyalty or confidentiality is forever per case law. Since this was before June 2020, the Santa Clara Bar Association protected white privileged lawyers. If you are a professional white person of privilege with lots of money to lose in order to make your spouse/partner's life miserable, then this law group is a good fit.
