MEEEE-OW!!!! These guys rock!!! I am a traveling contractor who does not get the opportunity to be at home with my pets very often and the majority of that responsibility goes to my partner. With an ill pet, all you want to know is, "Is he going to be ok?" "Is she getting better?" Our pets are more than a part of our family, they ARE our family. When my pet, Sparky, became distant and annoyed, and began to eat less, he also had a growth on his chin that I could not help him with...because I am not a doctor. Ah-ha! I reached out to HOPE Animal Rescue and I can't be more grateful. They stepped in and helped get Sparky to a veterinarian within a few days, after the application process was completed, and Sparky is a HAPPY CAT. Laurel was especially helpful in that she made the process seem like there wasn't a process...even though we all know what it takes to get things done today. Feats like this are not marginal notes in life...they are magnificent, loving, caring moments in time that help us to remember, "Wow. I really don't feel so alone out here in the world." I cannot say enough about HOPE Animal Rescue. In a way, Hope Animal Rescue rescued my pet AND me, because I was so distraught over what was happening to him and the not knowing is what creates the fear. I am so grateful to them for their cooperation and haste with the adoption. They have a specific system where you submit an application, meet a dog at an event, and demonstrate considerable interest in a dog. After that, you have a home visit and you get to adopt! My Husband and I drove to one of their events to meet their adoptable pets. We already had a pet in mind that we wanted to meet but we were not in a hurry. Excited, yes. In a rush, no. We want the pet to fit us and a pet that would be comfortable with us. We met Cathy at the event and she encouraged us to take the pet that we wanted in the bonding room. She'd also told us that the process usually takes about a week to complete between the application, home visit and evaluation, which I initially thought was a bit lengthy but hey, That's the process and having her say that gave us an idea of what we could expect. When we finally decided we wanted this one dog, we spoke to the foster. She asked questions, we asked questions. We told her that we've both had pets and that I've always had dogs, growing up. I told her that I have 3 family dogs back home that I had to leave because I moved to Durham. After a while, She disclosed that this dog is her favorite foster. We started the adoption process, sent the application as we left the event. After 2 days, we received a response or "clarifications" about our application. They felt more like she antagonized my "non-negotiables" about a dog's characteristics by telling me that this breed I was adopting was by nature, "chewers" and "barkers." Wait a minute, Aren't all dogs barkers and chewers?! And as mentioned, I've had dogs all my life. Training is key to having a peaceful life with happy, loving pets. Also, she asked me where "back home" was. Were they going to factor my being an immigrant, my heritage and upbringing to wether or not I could adopt this dog? The week was ending so I emailed the foster, requesting for an update. Politely. If I may add. But then, *crickets*. Days later, she responds telling us that she was looking at another applicant who works from home. We knew, going in that it wasn't a first come first served basis. But We thought it was extremely inconsiderate for them to keep us hanging if we didn't have a chance. Specially knowing that the process was only supposed to take a week. If you are in the Triangle, or in NC and you think a home inspection is excessive and GENUINELY WANT TO CARE for a dog, go somewhere else where they value your time and intentions in adopting a dog more than the amenities that the dog is going to have. read more

I adopted my dog through HAR and the experience was fantastic. They nursed her through heartworm, hookworm, mange, and set me up with the resources to work through her reactivity issues. My dog would not be alive today if it weren't for HAR, and I felt the need to give this 100% volunteer effort 5 stars as one small additional form of a thank you. read more

We adopted our sweet Maggie from Hope Animal Rescue in 2016 and to this day, we are so thankful for this organization! Maggie was captured as a stray and taken to a shelter, but thanks to one of the Hope Animal Rescue volunteers, she was fostered in a very loving home with a great puppy friend and a great human until we adopted her! Maggie's foster, Phillip, was so helpful and great to work with. He obviously cares about the dogs he fosters and genuinely wants to make sure they find safe and happy homes. The adoption process was smooth and appropriate; Phillip and another volunteer did a house visit and an interview to make sure we were good candidates for the adoption and then they worked with us to give Maggie a smooth transition to her new home. The most deceptive shelter second to those Craigslist scams. Long story short, they refused to let my partner and I adopt a dog simply because we want to adopt a child in the future. Apparently you can't do both? The only exception was if we were willing to adopt a pit bull mix that was clearly mislabeled as a lab mix. (Makes no sense, I know) When we submitted our application, we clearly stated that we wanted a lab, collie, shepherd, etc mix. They took down the listing for the "lab mix" (which only had a couple of older pics of the dog when it was real young) only a couple of days after submitting our application so naturally we thought the dog was already adopted. When they told us during our phone interview the dog was still available, they explained that they remove listings after receiving so many applications as to not be overwhelmed. Come to find out from the woman fostering the dog that she was so happy that we were gonna adopt him because she's been fostering him for four weeks which was already too long. She also mentioned that someone had adopted him but returned him almost immediately. When we asked her what she thought the breed was, without hesitation she claimed he was definitely more pit bull than anything. It was a lot more obvious in the pics she had sent us, too. We jumped through hoops to cooperate with this shelter during the application process. For one, we had to call our homeowner's insurance carrier to ask for a list of restricted breeds at the shelter's request (which the insurance rep thought was absurd). How are you ever gonna adopt out your pit bulls if you're so concerned with what insurance will cover? We respectfully told the shelter that we were no longer interested in adopting this particular dog because we did not want a pit bull mix (again, which we clearly stated in our application and also in emails with the volunteers). Not that we needed to, but my partner and I further explained that we're hoping to adopt a child in the future and didn't want to risk complicating the process by owning a pit bull. However, they literally kept pushing us to adopt this Pitbull and would not even consider letting us adopt a collie/shepherd mix that they had just added to their site (I'm talking same day). I know pit bulls are not the quickest pups to get adopted but how dare you push them on ppl who clearly said from the beginning they were not interested and then deny those same people a dog they actually want? In their final email to me, they said " I understand that you are frustrated but you applied for a dog and then decided he was not what you wanted." False. I applied for a lab mix that you intentionally mislabeled in order to trick someone into adopting him. In the same email, they said they would not be able to find us a match because they couldn't risk us returning a dog a few years later when we adopt a child regardless of the breed. Not once did I give any implication that We would ever return a dog for this or any other reason. Seriously? Don't waste your time with this place. The dogs deserve way better. read more

I am very disappointed in this organization. As a federally funded organization and works on donations, I recently have been looking for adopting a pet- taking serious concerns and an earnest look at my abilities as well as restrictions to wear I live. I went online applied over 10 days to finally be contacted to visit with a dog. After visiting was told that other applicants recently surfaced and there would be home visits to determine the dogs best fit. Was told the dog would visit a vet prior to the adoption process to ensure health. I later found out that another family visited and they would get the dog. While I understand if I displayed a lack of care for the dog and another home chosen but have more resources for pet care than the average person. I was later described as not having the experience needed for the dog but not asked about my training abilities. I asked about the breed (a mix) couldn't be told anything about the dogs background then identified as having no experience with a mix. There are signs of discrimination but more importantly a 501(c) organization who takes in donations should be more clear and less discriminating. Clearly it appeared that someone who works for the organization gave favorites on the dog. Are there other dogs? Sure but I was careful and meticulous in my selection. The main point is the practice in doing business. I don't think an organization who defends with "its difficult to manage due to lack of staff" should continue to get money if they can't manage it appropriately. I would be less offended if there weren't other organizations in this state because it is a high kill for rescue dogs. Find another organization in North Carolina. There are tons due to the low placement of rescue dogs. read more

I have been fostering with this organization for 3 years. it is a WONDERFUL ORGANIZATION! I can say that the group's founder pulls ALL types of dogs from shelters. Even the sick, injured, old. Many other rescues will only pull the dogs/puppies they think are most adoptable. But Cathy pulls many of the least likely to adopt dogs, and works with them to find them the best homes. We are all VOLUNTEERS! We spend our free time training, going to adoption events, meeting with potential adopters. While we may not be perfect we do the best we can to make sure the dogs and the families are suited for each other. In addition, Cathy and the volunteers often end up donating their own money to help offset the cost of caring for the dogs. Please continue to adopt, if not from Hope, then from other reputable rescue groups. And keep in mind, we're doing it for the dogs! read more

Best decision we could have made was adopting a dog through Hope Animal Rescue! They made the process so simple each step of the way providing ample opportunity for us to meet and spend time with our new dog prior to completing the adoption, even though we knew right away she was the one! They provided all the information from her past and took such great care of her, including significant veterinary care, before getting her to our new home safe and healthy. First off, let me say that the people who run and volunteer for Hope Animal Rescue are beyond wonderful. They are so patient with me and all of my questions. I love that the fosters are hands on with the dogs while in their care, and available to answer questions for potential adopters. I have been to a few places for my dog where Hope has held events (pet supply stores, parks, etc..) and have always stopped to chat, or let my dog meet/greet the puppies and other dogs. What a great group of people doing amazing work. I 100% recommend this rescue to anyone looking for a lifelong companion. read more
