Under the leadership of one of the truly few World Renowned Martial Arts Grandmasters, Kaicho Nakamura and his son, successor, and Chief Instructor, Nidaime Nakamura, Seido has become an integral part of not only my life but my entire family as well. A global organization with branches on almost every continent in the world, training is focused on "Karate-Do: The training of mind, body, and spirit to realize the fullness of human potential". As a true traditional Japanese martial art, training is comprised of a dedicated approach to mastering the fundamentals as building blocks to advanced and more complex techniques and requirements as one progresses at their own pace. You will sweat and push yourself, at times, further than you thought you can be pushed. Having trained at The Westchester branch for over 6 years this month, Seido has become an important part of my life where everyone focuses on the concept of Renma, "Keep Polishing" (Improving), regardless of physical ability, age, or rank. So much so, that my wife and I made the decision to introduce our elementary aged twin daughters to Seido earlier this year. The children's program is wonderful and puts exceptional credence to safety, development, and building confidence among the kids and teens. I've witnessed this firsthand as I help assist children's classes periodically. It's been a pleasure to refer Seido to many of our close friends, who also are either members themselves or enrolled their kids in the children's program and train with my girls. All of the instructors are wonderful people who I would trust with my daughters implicitly, without reservation. The organization as a whole attracts high caliber people from different walks of life, who bring a common denominator to the Seido community of being a genuinely good person. I couldn't recommend Seido enough to anyone and everyone. Having never trained in the martial arts before, yet always curious, as challenging and demanding as training is, the hardest part for me was getting the courage up to walk through the door on a particularly cold March evening in 2016. The rest has been exceptionally fulfilling, you won't regret it!

I am amazed and thrilled to see that it's still operating, and apparently under the capable direction of the now SHIHAN, Sakai, (whom I knew since S. Sakai was a white belt in our Founder, Saiko Shihan Shigeru Oyama's Dojo (School) in Manhattan, and at the time then, I was also just a lowly white or Blue belt myself!) Shihan Sakai got to where he is now, only through sheer determination and HARD WORK! I personally recall that he couldn't speak much English. He had no money. He had no one to Sponsor him here in America, and had no one to help him! (It can be a lonely thing for any human being to experience that!) Yet, in spite of all THAT, (or BECAUSE of it!) this fellow, Sakai, worked very, very, VERY hard to train himself. So much so, that in fact, (once in a while), the Master would have to remind Sakai to keep an extra dogi (uniform) handy, just in case. But when the Saiko Shihan, saw that Sakai was always at the dojo, and training as hard as he did, the Master said: "You might as well come and live here, and keep the place running smoothly while I'm not here." And so he did! Sakai joined the ranks of the "uchi-deshi," or "inside" students, who would clean and keep up dojo) when the Master wasn't there. So I liked the fact that the now SHIHAN Sakai had taken over the Scarsdale Dojo. It couldn't have happened to a better person! For, Sakai had progressed through the ranks very, VERY quickly, and earned his 1st Degree Black Belt and on up the ranks; due mostly to his hard work, good character, and relentless Courage! I'm proud to know him! And I wish him every happiness continued success withhis Dojo(s), there in White Plains! From your old Friend, Julie A. Cipolla

On Saturday, August 22nd, we were greeted by Shihan Peter Tirelli and the boys received their lesson. I agree to continue the process and I mentioned the promotion. While I was talking to Shihan Peter the boys were given uniforms, the cost of the uniforms was not indicated. Nor was I informed the fee for the uniforms was waived. To be honest, I thought it was included in the package for the 12 months. Instead, I received the pricing for the boys in 2 separate contracts Julius would be $239.00 a month and Liam who's 4 years old would be $191.00, I guess that's because of sibling discount that's suppose to be 20% percent off. On Saturday, after paying $30.00 before arriving I also left a deposit of $100.00 towards the tuition cost as I was not prepared or expected that we would have to pay the full amount for the month already upfront. We agreed that I could returned on Wednesday to pay the remaining balance. Yesterday, we returned to pay the remaining balance for the boy's for the month and for them to start training. And I asked the Sensei who was there that I wanted to confirm that $50.00 promotion was applied to the account and I wanted to know why I pay $30.00 for the beginner class of it was suppose to be free according to the promotion. He said, "hold on let me look into your account, I don't think we take that promotion...and wait I see it! so that went to the uniforms for the boys." And I replied, I wasn't informed there was a cost for the uniforms, I was only told to buy gloves for Liam who's 4 years on the tiger website for $60.00. That experience left a bad taste in my mouth, so I asked him for a detailed receipt indicating the cost for the kid's tuition and the breakdown showing that the $50.00 came off for the uniform cost for the kids. He said we really can't do that and gave me a receipt that just reflected a balance due, it does not state the cost of anything only what I paid for. At that point, I was feeling more uncomfortable and told the Sensei I needed to call my husband before I continued the process he said okay. So then I waited in the sitting area and he asked me to leave saying parents were allowed to stay in the waiting area to wait outside and pick up the boys from the back at the end of class. I said what do you mean the back, yes the kids are usually released from the back of facility and there's space for the cars there. I said wow that was also not communicated to me on Saturday. Especially, since on the website they have parents sitting waiting on the bench. Now upset standing waiting outside in front of the facility Shihan Peter calls, I explained everything and he apologized for not mentioning the cost and all these different details that were not discussed at the beginning of orientation and offered to cancel the contract for the misunderstanding and would provide a full refund. I said I would let him know. After, the boys finished the class, I just decided it was not going to work for me. I was afraid that the prices were not going to match pricing at different Tiger Schulmann due to the poor communication from the beginning. I felt like I was being misled and started looking at Tiger Schmann's in Manhattan. I called him and cancelled and he said "No problem, please send me an email requesting the cancellation." I emailed him right after our call but Today, I received an email from Shihan Peter: Yonkers yonkers@tsk.com wrote: Yes we will cancel their contracts but considering you took a 2 uniform and we only charged for 1 one your kids for a private lesson we should be even. I immediately called him and questioned his unprofessional email and offered to returned the gear. He said we can't take it back. I said, why did you offer a full refund if that was not going to be the case. He said let's just be honest you couldn't afford the class. Talk about professionalism. Parents BEWARE!!!

Gyms are back- but took me a while to nail "the one" because many rely on machine work which I would do- but they're necessarily not my thing. Classes are more up my alley because I love to get my body worked up real good with an instructor and Belmars in the Greenburgh area of White Plains, met me there. Belmars is primarily known for Muay Thai but with one call prior to my Saturday class, Peter mentioned there's Circuit training and Zumba. He texted location details as it's off the Route 119 path and prices for each of those. Because of COVID, Peter mentioned not many folks are hitting the gym and classes have been small. The entire Belmars space is big. It opens with a large exercise room, wall-to-wall mirrors, boxing ring further back and a smaller Circuit Rm- where I and someone else, dripped in sweat with Christine. Don't be fooled by her small frame- my girl will have you hating her...I did- but it was all love and the burn was real even the next day! Plus her playlist was bomb! From Freddie Mercury to old school hip- hop to some pop- she had us going. Listen- I'm a size 10 and felt super comfortable not to be exercising with size 0 Beckies like you see in high-end gyms. By the end of her workout, my muscles shook like never before. Christine's Circuit Training class wasn't an easy ride but made such and an incredible difference even it's just Saturdays for 45 minutes. After a year+ not stepping foot in a gym, coming here gave me adrenaline for more!

But quit because you felt out of place. You may have joined a Martial Arts school and realized that you are going to get hurt and you're not in shape. Or, you are like me looking for something different, I have practiced Shotokan karate for over 30 years. I have jumped from martial art school to martial art school and weight gym to weight gym. I completed Peter's 5 week beginners Muay Thai and fitness class. It's the class everyone has to take to advance to the Muay Thai Kickboxing and Boxing classes. That first class was filled with about 20 + people. I thought I was strong, but I was wrong. I can't jump rope and It was the first time I did a pushup in about 20 years. I also did not know what a Burpee was. (Peter made this exercise look easy). By the end of the 5 week class, I was at 50 Pushups, 3 minutes jumping rope and about 15 Burpees. Maybe Martial Arts are not for you, but you want to get in shape. You want a body of a boxer or you just want to take your shirt off at the beach. Or, if you are like me, you need to shed some pounds. (I was over 270lbs I now weigh in at 230lbs.) My name is Charles White. I hold black belts in Shotokan Karate and Kendo. If I could compress my 30 + years of experience. I would tell everyone to take the 5 week beginners class at Belmars Gym. There are even classes for children over 6 years. I even sent my two nieces and my nephew. The ability to defend oneself is a skill every child should learn. The ability to defend oneself is a skill they will remember for a lifetime
