My husband and I went to see this a few years ago and decided to go again last night. It was the same story, of course, but presented somewhat differently. That's what keeps shows such as this fresh. The show would have been much more enjoyable if the parents directly behind us had been gracious enough to remove their loud, talkative children to a section where they wouldn't have ruined the experience for me. My husband and I had to move from our seats to another row with less choice seats. They play was great! Inconsiderate parents need lessons in civility, common sense and general consideration for those around you. read more

Tonight was scheduled as opening night for the season. Because of several unavoidable circumstances it was a dress rehearsal instead. I is my understanding that 3 understudies had to perform tonight. The cast and crew should all be so proud of themselves. Tonight's performance was great and with a little more practice will be exceptional. I would go see this again and recommend it highly. read more

This was a great outdoor experience. Staff is friendly and helpful. The production is terrific. Be prepared for loud gun fire. That was a bit startling at first. It is a super fun show. The singing and dancing is wonderful. My favorite was the Cherokee fire dance. The widow's sense of humor makes the show. Costs for tickets, concessions, and seat cushions are reasonable. I have to say I was a little disappointed. We got general admission tickets because of the expense. We had great seats. Second row in the upper section. Could see real well but it was difficult at times to hear and understand the actors. There was especially one actor that talked way too fast and we understood nothing of what she said. If they are going to sell tickets for the upper rows, they need to have an adequate sound system. read more

Built in 1952, the Daniel Boone Amphitheatre is nestled into the hillside. Using natural elements from the surrounding area it has been carefully constructed to not disturb the beauty of the region. (during the play we were delighted to see firefly's flitting among the trees and bushes which make up the stage background) The Horn in the West, is one of our nation's oldest Revolutionary War dramas. It portrays the lives of pioneers who braved the wilderness to settle in the Blue Ridge Mountains while seeking freedom from British tyranny. Over fifty cast members present the history of our forefathers through drama, dance and music. I called and made reservations the night before and being a Thursday night, was able to get seats in the middle of the front row. The show was wonderful. Acting was first rate and we truly got a feeling for what the pioneers went thru as they sought freedom from Britain's reign. A great family outing. Be aware that there is battle & fight reenactments which means there is loud gun & canon shots...might scare younger children, as we heard some crying in back of us. There is a 15-20 minute intermission. Snack bar is open and you can bring purchased food to your seats. When I made our reservations I asked if we could bring our own water bottles in and they said that was fine, which is what we did. After the show, there is a meet & greet with the cast members on stage for those who choose to do that. Tickets are $18.00 for adults, $9.00 for children (12 and under) There is AAA, AARP, Military, and group discounts. One of the highlights of our trip! read more

A very professional play that taught me a lot about North Carolina Revolutionary history for the Boone area. By the end I was almost in tears. The acting was top notch and the singing and dancing also. I saw the fireflies and thank goodness no biting bugs. The first gunshot is rather startling, but really adds to the authenticity. I would definitely recommend this to anyone that loves history and/or good acting. Horn in the West is a part of the Southern Appalachian Historical Association and is a 501c3 non profit which also accepts donations of money or volunteers. And if I lived nearby I would definitely be volunteering. A wonderful place that preserves part of our country's history. read more

Total waste of money. Maybe a scam since prior reviews allude to the same issues for years now, but the issues still haven't been remediated. Wish I read the reviews before going! Very expensive, they up charge you for good seats. What they don't say is that you cannot hear the show from general admission seats! And I am not taking about the very back. I am talking about the middle rows! How much could it possibly cost to add a couple speakers in the middle and back rows? I am in my 30s with great hearing. In fact I have had my hearing checked multiple times over the past few years for tinnitus issues. Others in my group also said they had trouble hearing. They said there would be people dressed up at the cabins they charge extra to see. And those people were supposed to tell the history on it. There was one person at one of the 6 cabins. Maybe instead of investing in pretty programs for the show, y'all can invest in putting on a good show so people get what they pay for. And can hear it. I paid for my group of 4. And I feel like I was robed! read more

My family and I went to this place and missed the last guided tour of the afternoon. Tour guide Peter was happy to stay later and give us a tour. Peter is super knowledgeable about the time period and is an excellent communicator. He knew tons of history and really made it an enjoyable tour. Definitely recommend and we will come back again. read more

A must-see performance for anyone visiting the area! A fun outdoor evening performance for all ages. Especially enjoyed the choral aspect of the performance blended with a moving plot line! Fantastic choral singing with some beautifully lyrical and fun pieces. Some surprise action scenes kept the audience engaged. The lead actors did a tremendous job in expression and delivery. Enjoyed the period "mountain frontier" setting, scenery and costuming. Thank you SAHA for a memorable evening! read more

Glad I got to catch a show during the 68th season. Entertaining and interesting. Talented cast and the production was well done from the pre-show fun to the dance and music routines to the celebration of this important time in history. Would definitely recommend!!! read more

We have been to this play multiple times through the years, the last time was around 2013. Previously, we always walked away thinking how well it was put together, the story line was interesting and the history lesson was outstanding. We went back in August of 2016, the play had changed drastically. The new plot line was very slow and you did not get to know the characters. I found myself looking at my watch wondering when it would be over. Additionally, the sound quality this year was very bad. We sat about half way back in the theater and could not hear 50% of the play (I do not have hearing issues normally). Certain characters' voices carried well, most did not. I hope they make some positive changes for 2017, it is a great venue. read more

Horn in the West is an educational, live experience like no other. As quoted to me by a patron, "I had no idea that in 2 hours I would feel every emotion possible, it was worth every penny." A grandmother from Texas, " I travel every summer for the past 6 years to the Boone area with two different grand-kids. As of this summer all but one set says that out of ever stop made, every attraction seen, every night - the trip to Horn in the West was by far their favorite. So, 10 out of 12 teenagers choose your perforce as number one!" The rain-check policy is true, BUT for one to know, the rain-checks are good for FOREVER, no expiration date, this year one from 1979 came in. Even though the ticket price has almost doubled since the tickets original purchase, no money was asked of the patron. You pay once, until you have had the pleasure to see the Horn from start to finish, then like most other - we are sure it will be one of your ongoing summer adventures. read more
