First tip - get there early so you can explore the general area. We had a little time, so we hiked to Balanced Rock for some great views and some photo ops. "Gorge Underground" is an abandoned limestone mine (where they accidentally struck water and flooded it beyond use). Luckily, it's great for a kayaking adventure! Our guides were super nice and very informative. With one in front, and one bringing up the rear, you were free to wander (just a little) versus single-file through a boring tour. The experiences is just really cool. At one point, we ended up in the farthest-in part of the cave, and we all turned off our headlamps. Pitch dark. The guide had some funny stories, but then asked if it was anyone's birthday coming up (it was my son's in a couple days). So we all sang happy birthday to him (but he couldn't be embarrassed - it was dark and nobody knew who he was!). After finishing our 90 minute tour, it was time to dock. My wife and I lagged behind to be the last ones out, giving us probably 10 extra minutes of "taking it all in". One regret is that we didn't plan ahead enough to get the clear kayaks with LED lights. That would have been another layer of "cool". I would recommend to anyone. The water is still as can be, so it's a gentle paddle that anyone can do.

He was friendly, engaging and humorous. The round trip ride lasted about 90 minutes. The boat was very nice with bench seating and the ride was smooth. We sat upstairs in the open air to enjoy to scenery. A bar tender will take drink orders and deliver beverages to your seats. Drink prices are reasonable. Drinks can also be ordered and purchased on line. (I think snacks were also available). We booked our cruise several months in advance with tour and tasting tickets at Buffalo Trace Distillery. Two members of our party backed out and we were able to cancel their reservations (thankfully) the week before and get a refund. We started with our visit to Buffalo Trace. We arrived about an hour early so we could shop at the distillery and we were glad we did because we did not have time to shop after the tasting and getting to the boat. The tight timeline between the tasting and the boat departure was the only downside to the trip. I recommend the cruise, but plan on going at least an hour early to the distillery to shop.

Upon boarding the boat, the crew offered a bourbon service that would rival most any local selection. We all enjoyed lovely bourbon refreshments! Together with visitors from Tennessee and other nearby states, we learned some Kentucky River geography and history, along with equine, bourbon, and horse racing history. The captain was skillful and knowledgeable, as she cruised the riverboat on the sunny Sunday afternoon. The tour guide was a true font of history with amusing anecdotes of his personal career in the bourbon industry and his overall knowledge of the Commonwealth. Second time at the Kentucky Cooperage for a tour and it was as good as the first…read more The tour first starts at their welcome center. Make sure to take pics of everything there because photos are not allowed on the tours. After a short video, you climb into a bus and are shuttled over to the plant, where the tour officially begins. You first walk into the barrel raising room where the smell of fresh milled wood hits you. It's easy to see from the start that spirits get a ton of flavor from the barrels when you walk in and catch a whiff. After a short demonstration of raising, they walk you to what I consider the highlight of the tour, the char station. 6 barrels are loaded at a time, gas burners are inserted inside the barrel and for an undisclosed number of seconds, fire is applied to the inside. They are still on fire as they move to the next station where they are doused and put out. It's a spectacle I wish could be videoed because it's amazing. From there, a short demonstration on the art of cooperage and then outside for a photo stop. Overall a great tour with tons of knowledge about bourbon and spirits. If you are looking for something outside of distilleries, make a stop here. You won't be disappointed.

It is fun as you can pick up a free passport and have it stamped at each distilleries and in return you will get a free T shirt from KY Tourism Centre in Louisville. It is not easy to visit all 9 of them in a day or 2 as most of them closes early, far apart from each other and some involving tour/tasting that last for 2 hours!
