I was a bit apprehensive since I've only kayaked once before and really wanted the deluxe tour, but it was booked so I did the classic--and I'm so glad I went anyway! Billy and Pierah were awesome guides--patient, encouraging, and fun. I stayed toward the back while getting the hang of paddling, but got to enjoy the underwater views with Billy's lit-up kayak. I was surprised it's man-made, flooded limestone mine but it's still definitely worth checking off the bucket list. Just be prepared--it's VERY cold! We do quite a bit of outdoorsy road trips early. Kentucky is one of the best states for family outdoor adventure, everyone should check out at least once. The Gorge Underground clear boat cave tour was on my bucket list for a while. Booking was rather easy and responsive online. The price was reasonable for this unique guided tour. The tour starts by checking in the store, a guide will meet your grp outside for instructions and safety. They will provide the helmets and life jackets. The tour was approx 1hr long. We enjoyed the tour and learned alot about the underground cave. All the guides are good and very helpful about the tour and local area. I was kinda nervous at first, there is apart of the cave that you can touch the ceiling. Just tell the guide you would rather not if your nervous about it. The water is crystal clear and the fish are beautiful! I highly recommend if your in the area, you wont regret it. Our group booked an 8pm boat tour and it was the best end to our day! Everyone was so friendly there from the sweetest gift shop employee to our fun and funny captain! Very knowledgeable staff and very organized. Definitely recommend you fill out your waivers online ahead of time, gives you more time to look around the gift shop. No formal restrooms on site but the port a potties were clean and there was a handwashing station as well. Dress comfortable as the caves are a bit chilly but not very cold, depends on your tolerance of the cold. Take caution and hold onto your things securely, if it's dropped in the cave waters it's gone. We were told they will not retrieve lost items so bring phone and keys at your own risk. :) read more

We enjoyed our underground boat tour. We had Max as a guide... he presented the history of this flooded limestone mine with a great sense of humor. Tip: Don't be one of the first ones to board. We did and I had trouble seeing anything on the other side of the boat because you sit right beside the "captain" He sits up and the controls are right in the way. I also felt like there was more to see on the starboard side (right of the captain). All in all a cool tour, but it's only 30 mins long and it can be expensive for that. We were lucky and everyone in our tour got there ahead of time so we were able to head out 10 minutes early and get some extra time. read more

Can't think of the last time I went kayaking in a flooded mine... what a one of a kind tour! Tour guide Zach was hilarious! Be advised.... That water is cold, like 37 degrees cold. You do not want to fall in! It's also cold down there, wear several layers. I'm not a fan of gloves, but if you like them, bring them. I also was scared of losing the phone to take pictures, and concentrating on not trying to fall in (some of us fall out of boats often enough that it's a concern) so focused mainly on the experience, which was awesome! read more

We came to KY for our annual trip so we booked a late Classic tour since we had a large group. Staff was prompt and in good spirits when it was our turn. We met our tour guides, Peter and Dylan, who were amazing and funny. They helped us get fitted with a helmet and PFD and double checked everything before we got into the water. Peter lead us on the tour and explained everything as we went. He was very knowledgeable and kept us laughing. Dylan made sure we were all safe and reassured the young ones that we had with us. Afterwards, the gift shop stayed open for us so we could purchase souvenirs. I didn't catch her name but she was very nice and helpful. We are so glad we did this tour as we had an amazing time. Did the kayak tour. Booked it six weeks in advance but mistakenly made it for October instead of September. Stopped in to change the reservation. The girl working was very friendly and helpful but she had to call her manager to get the okay. (Their policy indicated no changes within 7 days and no refunds.) I was able to get it rescheduled for a $10 change fee. I understand that's their policy and it's only $10 but not great customer service for an honest mistake. The tour was cool. You are kayaking in a flooded mine. Everything looks the same but it's a pretty cool experience. *It's ~ 55° F year round inside the mine so dress accordingly. read more

We really enjoyed the deluxe tour with the clear kayaks! It had rained a lot recently so the path in the cave to even get to the kayaks was flooded; they had us get on a giant paddle board and ferried us across. It was a fun little extra adventure :). The store was very reasonably priced- we got the neoprene socks (I think it was $12/pair) to keep our feet dry and warm (for the deluxe tour they have you leave your shoes before you get in so you don't scuff the clear kayaks) and they kept our feet warm and dry. I'd definitely recommend this. The tour was great. My family of 4 was paired with another family of 4 or 5. The guide, Jacob, was knowledgeable and friendly, and had answers for every question. We enjoyed seeing the (huge) fish. The water was a little murky from recent rain but even with that, it was a very cool experience. My only complaint is that the "photo package" (which, to be fair, was very cheap- I think only $5) was pretty disappointing. Photos were pretty low quality; the stuff I took on my phone as we went were much better. read more

The tour is excellent and well organized. The tour stays together and you work your way through the caves. You will see a lighted underground where large rainbow trout swim. Tips for things to have before you arrive: *light pants *light jacket *light gloves - I didn't need but if you get cold very easily would be good *waterproof pouch - maybe a fanny pack Arrive early - the parking is at the bottom of a hill and you'll need to give yourself time to walk up to the site. Arrive early and don't forget to stop in the gift store and grab a sticker for your water bottle or suitcase to document your trip! Stickers are reasonably priced at $2-$3 for great quality. The tour is priced at $55 per person per hour for the classic tour. For two people after all taxes it was $125. I loved the tour but would love the opportunity to be in a smaller group on a longer tour - maybe a deluxe where there's like 5-6 people and you can freely explore for 3 hours. That would be so awesome! I enjoyed the tour but would have been more relaxing if you have the option to freely explore. Maybe a few days a year could be local days - buy a pass for half a day and have fun! read more

Wow! Amazing tour by Acelyn! We spent about 45 mins in this old limestone mine, which closed due to flooding when miners struck an aquifer. The current owner purchases this parcel of land and the mine came with it, and it was turned into a fascinating tour. You have the option of paddle boarding, kayaking, or joining a group tour in a pontoon boat that can hold roughly 20, although if you want to Kayak or SUP, you need to reserve months in advance. The water is crystal clear and they have lights placed in various places in the mine, otherwise it would be completely dark. The depth of the water table is 30 ft at its deepest and we noticed our heads got closer to the ceiling. The mine averages 50 degrees year round, so come prepared with a sweater and pants. The water is 45-50. The only inhabitants are rainbow trout and bats. The trout are non-native but were introduced by the touring company and are fed and the lights in the mine are kept in place so the trout don't become totally blind. The bats, we spotted a one or two, flew in, and call it home, albeit a noisy one. There is also a Skelton and Aragorn from Harry Potter. They like to keep it festive here. Our host who operated the boat which was on slow speed the entire time - a battery operated motor - which was silent. We road a total distance of 1 mile in the mine during our trip. You wear helmets and must also carry a floatation device, which doubles as your seat cushion, or can also wear a life jacket. All children older than 4 YO must wear a life jacket, which are provided / included in your ticket price. These are all sanitized in between each use. Super educational experience. You could ask Jaclyn all sorts of questions about the mine and her work as a tour guide which appears to be a fun one. If you are in the Red River Gorge area this is a must activity. read more

Quickly became not that exciting for me: group moved together slowly, I wasn't very challenge by the paddling, not that much difference between the sections. Fantastic way to spend some more time "outdoors", but give the legs a little break and see a completely different side of wildlife. Our tour guide, Max, was 72 and absolutely ruled. He made the experience interesting and entertaining. It's a nice cool 50 degrees down there, which can be nice if you've been out in the sun all day, but I recommending bringing jackets if you're in summer mode. Slightly pricey, but worth it for a change of scenery and a cool experience. Our family included 4 kids from 8-11yo, and they dug it too. read more

This was a super cool experience. These man-made caverns are super impressive, and it was really neat getting to tour them and learn about their history and composition of the structures in the area. They sprinkled in some funny props in the caverns that you're gonna have to visit to see for yourself! You have the option to take a single kayak out a double. The staff helps you get in and out, which I greatly appreciated. They have personal protective equipment for you to wear (life jacket, helmets), and the whole thing felt very safe. Try not to fall in the water though, it's pretty chilly! Also, bring some warm clothing. I came in a tank top and was pretty cold until I got moving. It's a little hard to hear the tour guides at times, but you can always ask them whatever you may have missed, or if you have any other questions. Overall this was a great time, and a really fun activity. Make sure you follow the directions they provide to find it. Check it out! read more

Pretty neat! At one time we were 263 feet underground. The cave seemed really safe. The water was clear and the fish were cool to see. They should have fishing next. We did the classic tour and our guides, Ray and Livia were amazing guides Ray in particular was a really goofy and funny guy who was cracking dad Jokes the whole time. The tour itself is a whole bunch of fun with very interesting sights and scenes with a ton of history behind it. As for the kayaks themselves they are extremely high quality I don't think you could tip it if you tried and you can have two or one man kayaks which is always nice. It was cold in the cave but not unbearable if you wear a coat you'll be fine. Overall it was a ton of fun for the price and would highly recommend to anyone who is in the area! read more

It's a pretty easy tour, just have to avoid a couple cold waterfalls but the guides help you get around. They have enough light to see and get pictures and enjoy yourself, which I was glad for, thinking it would be super dark. The water looks really neat and there's big fish swimming alongside you.
