This is a fun place to check out while you're in the Lake Charlevoix area. We popped in before a sailing tour and grabbed sandwiches, chips, and drinks for the tour. Staff was friendly and the food was prepare fresh and tasted good when we finally unwrapped it. Just be prepared for the prices. We had sticker shock when everything was rung up. Is the place picturesque? Absolutely. Was the food delicious? Yes. Could we have gotten things we liked just as well in Charlevoix for less? I'll please the fifth. In a tucked away corner of Horton Bay is a quaint store which also serves shareable meals several nights a week. After seeing their sign we called and made reservations for Saturday night. We talked to the chef about our dietary restrictions and she assured us it wouldn't be an issue. Upon arriving we entered through a side door into the general store proper, which is just one large room with some items for sale (beer and wine) and other fun antiques to peruse. During the day they sell food things and coffee so next time we might try to check out their daytime options. We were greeted immediately and told to choose a beverage. If you choose wine just note you are purchasing the whole bottle. There is water on the table in case you don't find something to your liking, but as we didn't know that we chose wine. It was a bit much for two people to finish and then drive, so next time we would come with others or choose something smaller. Regardless the wine was a nice touch. The meal is served outside in a small garden like area surrounded by hedges so it feels intimate and secluded. You are right next to the other guests so there ends up being a lot of cross table taking/eavesdropping. The tables are iron and quite cute if a bit rickety. The menu is one page of shareable dishes (called tapas but if you are thinking Spanish tapas this is not that at all) at around $20 per item. There wasn't actually anything vegan on the menu but a few that could be vegetarian. Make sure to ask for additional options for sensitivities, as only afterwards when paying did the chef mention she could have done something vegan for us. We had mentioned it at the start of the meal but she was a bit distracted and said so eggs are ok right? Not wanting to cause a scene we agreed but I knew it wasn't going to end well for me. The salad was our favorite with pickled onions that were surprisingly tart and perfect with the other salad additions. We also ordered the frittata (as still hungry) which smelled delicious and had a nice creamy texture and gooey cheese. Then we got a pepper dish which was supposed to be a spread but was really more of a hash/stir fry. It was quite tasty and would have been a better option than the frittata for us. I loved the garden feel as you could hear the trees whispering above you and imagine you were in a fairy tale. The service was excellent and overall the experience was memorable and tasty. I did feel the food was a bit pricey for the portions, and perhaps if you bring children then each dish serves 4 but not adults who have been out hiking or active. It was worth the history and ambience for a fun experience. We might try another spot in the future but this is definitely worth checking out at least once for the overall evening experience. read more

Our family has been frequenting food Chip has been putting out since he opened up a Deli in Boyne City way back when. We have been enjoying the Tapas dinners at The Horton Bay General Store (aka Morgan's Restaurant) since it was introduced several years ago. This year our family was celebrating our father's 80th Birthday and not only did Chip host 19 of us (16 adults and 3 rug rats) on a busy night, he provided a delightful selection foods for our sail on Grand Traverse Bay with 50 family and friends. Chip cares about what he and his staff prepares, serves and how they treats their customers. Cannot ask for anything more than that! This is a gem of a place! It's a throwback in time and worth the stop for a sandwich, fresh baked goods or better yet, an evening enjoying tapas! Thank you Chip and staff for an amazing experience last night. We were celebrating a 50th birthday and had 11 people. Chip was so accommodating our large loud group. We handed over the menu and let the staff do their magic! Everything was amazing from the first course to the last! You rarely stumble across a place like this! Their tapas night is something I would travel back for. Food quality was superb, some of the best I've had ever! Chefs should be very proud. So far I have rated six restaurants in this area and all were three's. This is definitely a five star. It has the ambience and lacks pretentiousness or any flavor of trying to be more than they are. It is a absolutely wonderful setting and the food is unique and has wonderful flavors. We didn't even order meat but just chose the vegetarian dishes and it was excellent. You really have to make a reservation and try this place. It is all tapas and just delicious. And if you go earlier in the day, you really have to stop in next door at the Red Fox Inn. This is the place that we used to come as kids and had chicken and dumplings and a wonderful tomato pie. Never had anything like it sense. They closed in the mid-70s and a woman who used to be a waitress there, Mary Lynne, runs a memorabilia shop which includes a lot of memorabilia from Hemingway etc. They have great baseball cap with a Red Fox on it. If nothing else, you have to meet Mary Lynne. read more

Neat little store to visit. They have a nice selection of American foods available for breakfast and lunch. On Fri and Sat they serve tapas in the evening. Overall the food is really good. It's also a nice place to get coffee as well as the proceeds from the coffee goes towards the humane society. Lastly, there is a neat book store next door worth checking out as well. And the food wows at every course. We went with a group of 10 and ordered one of everything to share - the meatballs, duck and scallops had us wishing we ordered more but everything we tried was excellent! You buy wine/beer from the front general store so you don't have to pay the typical restaurant mark-ups. A true gem in northern Michigan and the hosts we so welcoming! This is such a cool place! It's worth a stop for the General Store. This is a cool old building full of Northern Michigan history. They also have a kitchen. This General Store has AMAZING Tapas!! The chef Darlene Kline is, to say the least, a genius! Her creations are over-the-top fabulous and she even stops by our table to say hello and chat. I always have an excellent experience on the back patio while dining and I cannot get enough of the food there. The owner has always been very pleasant and attentive.
