THE. MOST. DELICIOUS. PASTRIES. EVER…read more On our roadtrip, we stopped at the Crooked Tree looking for a local coffee shop. What greeted us was the most delightful case of pastries and loaves of breads. This is a bakery with no seating. Looks to be a large operation that might deliver breads and baked goods locally. There is a bread case, a pastry case, and lots of merch. A very patient young lady was working the counter on the morning we stopped. It took me a while to decide because I wanted one of everything, but had no business doing that! She patiently and quietly waited. Finally, I settled on a ham and cheese croissant and a cherry and white chocolate scone. My husband had a raspberry danish. I did get a drip coffee in the end. The ham and cheese croissant was crisp and flaky with the perfect balance of hame and gruyere. I have not had a scone this good. Ever. Not even in Ireland! If you "do not like scones," these are worth the try! We snacked on the pastries in the car so along with Lake Michigan sand, my car now has lots of flakes of our delicious pastries. Like sand, it's impossible not to leave remnants of the goodness behind. Tip: if you are not local, buy more than you need!! I wish I had.

Flavor if cinnamon rolls were more spicy maple. Chocolate chip cookies were not good at all. I found them to be soft yet the flavor to be different. Oatmeal cookie was over baked. Service- fast and fair Ambiance- small non-rustic bakery I would not recommend this place as none of the baked goods that I purchased were tasty. Very disappointing.

I recently stopped in on July 4th and picked up a dozen red, white and blue decorated cookies to bring to a friend's house that was entertaining. I found some with fireworks decorations and some with smiley faces. Needless to say, they were well received by the hostess and the guests enjoyed them. Even on a busy holiday morning, there were delicious looking donuts and baked goods, and the aroma brought back all kinds of emotions from my childhood too. Johan's is old school but that never goes out of style. Service was not the friendliest but it was not bad. You order at the counter and pay and you're out... easy peasy. While I took my cookies to go, there are some tables outside if you wanted to sit down for a few and enjoy your treats there. If you're in the area, definitely stop by Johan's for a tasty pastry (or two) and cup of coffee!

Because there were so many, I ended up getting a couple of the bakers confused. But regardless, I made an appointment for my fiancé (ATT) and I to head up north for a couple tasting appointments. Again, to my surprise, this location was at the baker's home, which was gorgeous! It sat behind a lake and we entered through the back door that led straight into the kitchen. You could definitely tell that this baker knew what she was doing because everything was laid out beautifully and organized. We had one of the last appointments and thought we would be sitting one-on-one with the baker, but noticed it was more like a tasting buffet, where we got to mix and match different flavor cakes and frostings, which was nice because we could talk about each one in private. There was a couple girls assisting the couples and available for any questions we had and even had several binders full of past wedding/celebration cakes. My personal favorite was the vanilla bean cake but had a hard time choosing a frosting. Personally, the frosting was a bit too sweet for me. We ended up not going with BED for our wedding, but definitely thought the price was similar to the bakers around northern Michigan. I believe there was an minimum of $250 that we had to spend, especially because it was going to be delivered to Castle Farms in Charlevoix, which isn't bad. But we ended up going with a baker in SE Michigan for $150 for the same amount of cake/cupcakes for 50-60 people.

The cake and delivery fee were very reasonable, and the vanilla with vanilla bean frosting cake was so delicious (my mom kept ravings about it days after). Their handmade bakery goods and other goodies are made fresh daily, sometimes hourly, are always delicious and you can tell they take great pride in only offering the very best they can. We have ordered 'Yule log' otherwise known as 'Bûche de Noël', Christmas cake several times, including this year & they are always delicious and very well received by our Christmas guests! They use locally sourced ingredients where they can and always seem to have a lively, fun, yet relaxed atmosphere of locals and seasonal guests either stopping by for an excellent cop of coffee & a treat or maybe lingering for a while enjoy a breakfast treat or sandwich and while hopping onto the Internet to check of email via their Wi-Fi network. You are always greeted with a friendly 'Welcome' or 'Hello, we'll be right with you.' if they are busy and you always feel welcome even if it's your first time! We loved everything we've tried including their artesian breads, pastries, cookies, Pecan Rolls (so good when they've just come out of the oven!!) as well as their made-to-order cakes, which are amazing!! Highly recommended & we love supporting locally owned & operated businesses & this one is definitely worth supporting!
