I do not recommend this firm to anyone. I hired Summer Horton to take over my divorce case after firing my previous attorney. I was charged $3,500 just to transfer the case, even though I had already arranged for all documents to be sent over. From the start, I expected efficiency and progress--neither of which I experienced. My request was straightforward: finalize the divorce, establish 50/50 custody, and fairly divide the house. Instead, my case dragged on for approximately 1 year and 10 months without a formal case review. That level of delay is unacceptable. When I appeared before the judge and explained the situation, even the court questioned why there had been no progress. I also felt my direction was ignored. Rather than focusing on resolving the case, there was a continued push to pursue attorney's fees from my ex--something I never asked for and did not want. The billing was excessive and, in my opinion, unjustified. Monthly charges ranged between $3,000 and $4,000, yet there was little to no meaningful progress in my case. This put me into serious financial strain. After I terminated representation, I was still being asked for additional payments, which only added to the frustration. This experience was costly, stressful, and ultimately unproductive. Based on my experience, I strongly advise others to think carefully before hiring this firm. read more

It's been over a year since I last had any communication with Ms. Horton, but I want to share my thoughts to protect others from making the same mistake I did. My case was fairly simple: I needed a NJ court order domesticated in Florida so I'd have legal footing to make my noncompliant ex-husband adhere to the ruling that had already been adjudicated in New Jersey. Ms. Horton seemed like a logical fit. She is a single mother, so it made sense that she'd represent me--a single mother fighting to see her children. My ex was in such flagrant violation of the law that Ms. Horton sounded confident that we stick him with some of the legal fees on top of airfare reimbursement as ordered by the NJ court. I agreed to pay Ms. Horton $300/hour. She started by giving me a multiple-page questionnaire. After I poured over the paperwork, it was sent to my ex, who did likewise. This back and forth lasted for ages, with Ms. Horton serving as an overpaid mediator between our written argument. Months later, Ms. Horton would tell me there was no chance the judge had read said questionnaire. Months later, Ms. Horton would tell me that we should have started by having the case domesticated. Meanwhile, I had mentioned the need for domestication before I'd paid her a cent--in my very first correspondence. Her losing track of where the case stood would become a very expensive recurring theme. After we had one of the two children's visitation secured (subsequent counsel would quickly have both children sent) the ball was dropped entirely. I never received any reimbursement for airfare or legal fees and was then told that seeking restitution could be an expensive gamble. This would have been a fair assessment had it come prior to the bills rolling in, but this case was always about visitation rights and money for me. While other lawyers said they would domesticate the NJ case for $3000, Ms. Sommers' fees came to $7500. The difference of $4500 would have fully paid off my arrears had I used a different lawyer. By now, I didn't contact Ms. Horton for months. When my boyfriend mentioned her name, I would break down in tears. Finally he emailed her to ask about the case. (In this correspondence, she mixed up my boyfriend's first name in replying to his email. This is to say that between the last word of my email and the first word of hers, there had already been a mix-up. Such is her attention to detail.) She told him that she had been waiting on me to proceed. Meanwhile, she was still sitting on $600 I'd already paid her. (That's right, you overpay in advance rather than paying for completed work...more on that later.) To finish the job I felt she'd left half-finished, she wanted another $5000. That's when she sent me a "revised flat fee legal serrvices agreement" PDF that was misspelled exactly as you see above. I decided against giving her any more money. Instead, I went with another lawyer (Sam Troy) who learned the case from scratch and got the desired result for less than $5000. Said lawyer was very straight-shooting, always knew what I was talking about when I called, and never once got my name wrong. Before closing, I'll bring it to your attention that Ms. Horton's contracts mandate that disputes be solved through arbitration. That is to say that she has protected herself form legal repercussion.
