If you look on Google Maps or Earth for Hosmer Lake, you'll see a rather weird-looking body of water, as compared to the other nearby Cascade Lakes. Hosmer is irregular, strung out with a snaking channel between two larger sections and very, very green. The sort of pale green I associate with swimming pools that haven't been maintained, or stagnant ponds. In other words, not entirely appealing. On the ground, or water, the reality is quite different. Hosmer is beautiful with clear water. And it's perfect for kayaking, with views of Mt Bachelor and South Sister, plenty of shoreline places to explore and enough acreage to accommodate the crowds. Access Hosmer via the south Elk Lake Loop road (labeled Mud Lake Rd on Google Maps) off the Cascade Lakes Scenic Byway. Follow the road to the boat ramp area. There's a campground on the left just as you get to there. The boat ramp area doubles as a parking lot - there are no dedicated parking spots, just a lot of dirt and gravel. People seem to leave the left side for loading and unloading kayaks and canoes, while parking on the right side. It can get tight. Once on the lake, you can poke around the south area but the more interesting spots lie along and beyond the channel to the north. This is a fishing lake, so mind the fishing lines. A former Yelp Bend CM, Chris has documented Bend outdoors quite well.

It is one beautiful lake. So quiet to be on the lake in a kayak. It has a calm river exit to paddle up. Stop, and have lunch.

The lake seemed beautiful but it was so crowded we couldn't get our kayaks even close to the boat ramp.

My friend chose to hold her wedding reception here, and it was absolutely perfect. Easy to get a nearby caterer (Bleu Bite was awesome!), and they let us decorate how we wanted and set up as appropriate. Parking is fairly easy, although in the mid-summer during the afternoon it gets crazy as everyone heads down to the lake. Perfect location for kayaking, paddle boarding, or just lounging/swimming with the family. The campground itself was easy to navigate and overall served its purposes well. The bathrooms were disgusting, but fairly par for the course for these types of places. The biggest problem is that there is only 1 shower for the entire campgrounds. ONE SHOWER. We had to twist the arm of the person at the front desk to get her to keep a list for the shower as well, as we were all trying to get ready for a wedding. A few of us ended up just jumping in the lake and wearing our hair up. Oh well, I guess for more hardcore outdoorsy people this is a minor issue, but I was kind of sad about it.

The staff was incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful in choosing the right paddleboard for us. We rented stand-up paddleboards for one hour for $30, with the option to extend to two hours for $40, which is a great value. The river is beautiful, peaceful, and full of interesting scenery. There is always something to see along the way, making the experience fun and relaxing at the same time. And don't be shy about jumping into the water if the conditions allow--it can be part of the fun! Just be sure to follow the safety instructions provided before your adventure begins. We had a wonderful time and would highly recommend Tumalo Creek Kayak & Canoe to anyone visiting Bend.

Luckily, we managed to do a walk-up appointment and get our tubes for floating. They do offer online reservations, more than 24 hours in advance, but they had plenty of inner tubes so a reservation was not needed that particular day. From start to finish, they made the entire process extremely easy and seamless. From being able to park your car and get a ride with your inner tube to the drop off point and then being picked back up by the shuttle and returned to the parking lot, and everything in between. They provided us with a good safety briefing as well as the opportunity to leave our car keys since I had not thought about bringing a waterproof pouch. For just about $30 per person, it was well worth the experience and took us about two hours, but we did stop after the rapids and spend some time just swimming before continuing on. If you are a local or just visiting the Bend area, I cannot recommend floating the river enough.
