The Good: friendly helpful staff, comfy beds, ample locked storage, great location. The Less Good: Need to up their cleaning game. Big wad of wet paper towels in one bathroom and abandoned soap bar in the shower. Assumed staff would clean that up by the next day. Two days later. Still there. Tables could have used a couple wipe downs a day. None of this was awful. But seems so easy to fix with a little more attention to detail. read more

Stayed at the start and end of my SHT hike in September/October. Bathrooms were super clean and bed was comfy. Appreciated the bed "cubbies" with personal light/fan/curtain which gave privacy. Staff was super nice and helpful. read more

It's been literally years since my last hostel stay. And that was in my Europe travel days. That said, this was a very welcome reintroduction. The spirit of travel is reignited in me just by a one night bunking. I came across them by chance on Airbnb while cruising into Duluth for the first time. The desk staff was very helpful and gave me a short, but thorough tour. Even in "covid times" I can't complain at all about cleanliness. Then again, I'm actually pretty easy going about all that anyways. My bunk was cozy, the bed was comfy, and the night was quiet (probably owing to the fact that they were only half full). Even at that, the interaction with fellow travelers was easygoing and friendly. They have a huge common area and kitchen for all with coffee and tea. Not to be forgotten is the literal full-on sauna. Bathrooms are clean, modern, and well maintained. In general it's in good shape for an old building. I'm already aching to get back to enjoy multiple days of summer in Duluth and a longer stay here. read more

Chose to stay here instead of a hotel as I was alone and couldn't stay at the campground with my kids due to back issues. I did not want to spend $200 for a night however, so I thought I'd try this. I'm 53 and it was my first time at a Hostel. My daughter has stayed in several around the world so I guess I'm late to the party. Checking in was easy. I called for someone to come to the front desk and he appeared within minutes. Very nice and helpful. I explained to them when I made the reservation I needed something easily accessible and that is exactly what I got. I could enter right from the street and get to my bunk. If I needed to go upstairs to the desk and lobby area, I could go up the stairs if I was able or just walk around to the back of the building and enter from the back door. My bunk was very cozy and I felt private, even though it's an open area. It's like being in a little cave:) Reading lights and fans are in each bunk area. 2 lockers for your things with keyed locks. Several individual bathrooms with a shower on each level. The sauna was also downstairs though I didn't partake. Upstairs in the lobby it was very inviting to chat with people. Lots of seating. Food area with dry cereal, milk, etc. Microwave, refriderator. Everything you need to make yourself at home! Everything was super clean! That was my biggest worry. I am a clean nut and I couldn't have been more happy. The only negative was the clunking of people on the stairs well into the night. I was awoken many times as the staircase is right above the lower level and it sounded terribly loud. I did lose sleep because of it and wish I would have had earphones on. I would recommend asking to sleep upstairs if you want to avoid that. They really should lock the door from the street at night and only allow entrance from the back. Hostel du Nord is totally legit and budget travel worthy. Great location, great accommodations, and one awesome owner, Bob. I visited Duluth for the weekend and staying at Hostel du Nord was a big reason I had such an awesome experience and why I'll be visiting again in the future. I've been to several hostels before this trip and I can happily attest that Hostel du Nord is truly one of the best hostels I've ever stayed at. Very traditional bunk style set up, but there are curtains to enclose yourself with and each bed comes with a personal locker. My favorite part about the place was the free sauna which was located on the first floor. After spending all day outside in the cold weather, the sauna was the perfect way to finish the day. The owner, Bob, is such a friendly host and is a very cool person to become friends with too. He was born and raised in Duluth and knows the place better than anyone else. He provided me with a list of things to do throughout my stay and had a lot of cool stories to share. I would highly recommend Hostel du Nord!! read more

I recently visited Duluth for a night and found this gem of a hostel located in a historic building downtown. Though it's a little difficult to find and not well-signed, once I found it, I had no trouble finding a parking space. The hostel has a hip, friendly vibe, the staff are very helpful, and the place is clean and quiet. I haven't stayed in a hostel in years, but I enjoyed my time here. The layout is more private than the standard dormitory bunks, and the cubby-like wooden bunks feel cozier. The place also comes with a sauna which I enjoyed a bit too much. As a single traveler, it was great to come here and meet new people rather than stay in an overpriced, lonely and sterile chain hotel. read more

Stayed 1 night for a few hours and spent $80. Which is kind of expensive for a bed. That's why it gets 4 stars. BUT the workers are great. Polite and helpful. I will say the hostel is clean. Everyone was quiet during quite hours. It reminded me of college a little bit. Shared space. Grill and fire pit outside. Parking in the back was convenient. If I do it again it would definitely be for a few days vs 1 night. read more

The bunks are private, and at a fraction of the price of any hotel in town, this would be a great option even if it weren't a fantastic way to meet cool people...but it is. This place was a great alternative to staying at a traditional hotel in Duluth since I had no interest in lounging around in a hotel room (would rather be out and about while in Duluth) and just wanted a clean bed and shower for my recent visit. Surprisingly clean all around. The only con I have is that the mattresses slept hot and the sleeping area downstairs felt more warm than necessary. Woke up a few times at night due to being too warm even with the privacy curtain open for airflow. Wish they had turned down the temperature a couple of degrees. They do have fans in each pod but would rather have a cooler sleeping area to being with instead of a personal fan blowing at me all night. Hence the 4 stars instead of 5. The location was great, across the street from a Holiday Inn and very close to a Starbucks. And less than a mile to the canal and a little over a mile to the Rose Garden. If you're not a picky person I would 100% recommend this place. Even if you're a tiny bit picky you won't really have issues here. They don't have a huge sign out front so keep your eyes peeled. read more

My friend and I were strapped for space in Duluth when we wanted to go watch a relative run the grandma's marathon! It was fully booked everywhere but Hostel du Nord. Looking into this space a little more, we saw few but very good reviews so I went for it. I called the number which takes you directly to Bob who is literally the chilliest, most joyful happy person. He was calmly went through the reservation with me and was available for questions leading up to the stay. They kindly offered us free parking during the morning of the marathon (we arrived in the Duluth at 6am and checkin wasn't until 3pm) and this was a complete lifesaver considering how packed that weekend gets. For how full the city was, guests in the space were very quiet and followed quiet hours. This may have been because everyone was so tired. The space is just so cool - Japanese style pods that are both inviting for sleep and can get VERY dark when you close the curtain so I highly recommend setting an alarm no matter what! There are a set of private bathrooms with a shower, sink and toilet in each so there's no line from the bathroom AND they're clean! I was so impressed by this place, I had to take all the pictures I could and say all I can about it. Such a well-run place and great hospitality! read more

Great place, I will come again! Staff are very friendly. Full kitchen with fridge, freezer, toaster oven, microwave, electric burner. Great location, so you can totally stay here and explore Duluth area with ease. $5 a day parking, or Duluth has great public transportation (bus station 2 blocks away) if you didn't drive. Within walking distance of great restaurants and bars with vegan/gluten free options. Sleeping area is quiet. You can't hear people talking in the common area, but I'm a light sleeper, so I started hearing people walking at around 5 am. Bunk have locked lockers and cubby next to bed as well as reading lights. read more

There's a sauna and a little hot tub, a kitchen (with amazing coffee!) Beds are in little nooks in the wall, with curtains for coziness/privacy.
