The short rib ragu is their bread and butter, but I decided on the breakfast hash because this girl is powerless against a fried egg. It comes with the semolina gnocchi, vodka sauce, Italian sausage, peppers and a fried egg on top. The portion seems a tad small at first for $8, but it's quite filling and so, so, so delicious. The owner Tyler is one of the friendliest folks you'll meet and even gave an arrival time for my food (about 6-7 minutes), which allowed me to wander around the market for a little while instead of hovering around the stand drooling. In addition to the short rib and breakfast hash, they do a couple of other gnocchis (both potato and semolina), polenta and some fresh lemonades. I'll definitely be back.

We swiftly ordered a donut bacon cheeseburger with the works. It was almost immediately ready (not really a good thing...) and I was able to snap a pic before we snapped our jaws. So... eh. The answers to the questions above turned out to be: No. Yes. Because it was disappointing. And a very firm No. So the donut itself was the very best part - the inside was soft and the outside was grilled on the flat-top, and then it was finished with a delicious warm glaze. But the donut burger did not yield a good burger. It was a thick overcooked and under-seasoned patty. Pickles came with it, and though I love me some dills, I hated the way it paired with the donut. I would omit them completely, which is a big sacrifice coming from me. Also, my boyfriend asked me to put ketchup on it, but I purposefully "forgot", because that sounds terrible to me too. I think if they offered something else like... a tomato jam, cherry chutney, or even BBQ sauce, it would make a would of a difference. Oh, and a tolerable burger too. But the building itself is an old A&W drive-in fast food joint, built in 1953. Very cool! Most people seem to drive around the back of the building and pull into one of the parking spots that were "order from your car" spaces back in the day. Or you can just park on the street. Then you walk up to the window and place your order. Easy, right? This is where it starts to get weird. The sliding order window has 2 basement window well covers bolted over the sliding doors, like a big clam shell. The owners cut a flap in the bottom that only opens from the inside. Apparently, this is some sort of home-made do-it-yourself security thing. It seems to do the job...but you can't talk to them and they can't hear you until they slide open the door and then shout through the clam shell. And they don't seem to be in a hurry to do anything. I stood around like an idiot for a while, watching the lady, until she FINALLY slid the door open and talked to me. Kinda hard to hear through the big plastic clam shell. Speaking of shouting...you wait in your car or stand outside for 15 or 20 minutes and they yell when your food is ready. You can't hear what they're saying when they shout...but it all seems to workout okay. Like I said - quirky. LOW CARB: Okay, on to the most important thing: the food. I got the rib tip combo meal with a big hot link. Both were excellent. The rib tips were amazingly tender and lathered in generous amounts of a sweet sauce. Great taste. My hot link was huge and flavorful. For some reason, it reminded me of a big blood sausage. Good stuff. Unfortunately, you can't get any meat without sides. And all of the sides are plants. So in addition to my meats, I received and payed for unwanted carbohydrates of coleslaw, white bread toast, and a huge mountain starchy of fries. Those all came home with me to feed the Blue Jays and the Squirrels. That was kind of a waste of food but I had no choice about the high starch carbohydrate sides. I like this place. Nothing has made her more excited than Barkley's. She goes nuts for their smoked bones. I've tried a slew of treats from pet conventions and dozens of pet stores all over, but nothing has received this much approval from the little one. If this high maintenance super picky eater approves, then it's gotta be 5 solid stars.
