Great BBQ - 4 stars. Amos & Amos is a quirky place. And I have to admit, I love the weirdness. According to the owner, they've been around for 9 years. But the building itself is an old A&W drive-in fast food joint, built in 1953. Very cool! Most people seem to drive around the back of the building and pull into one of the parking spots that were "order from your car" spaces back in the day. Or you can just park on the street. Then you walk up to the window and place your order. Easy, right? This is where it starts to get weird. The sliding order window has 2 basement window well covers bolted over the sliding doors, like a big clam shell. The owners cut a flap in the bottom that only opens from the inside. Apparently, this is some sort of home-made do-it-yourself security thing. It seems to do the job...but you can't talk to them and they can't hear you until they slide open the door and then shout through the clam shell. And they don't seem to be in a hurry to do anything. I stood around like an idiot for a while, watching the lady, until she FINALLY slid the door open and talked to me. Kinda hard to hear through the big plastic clam shell. Speaking of shouting...you wait in your car or stand outside for 15 or 20 minutes and they yell when your food is ready. You can't hear what they're saying when they shout...but it all seems to workout okay. Like I said - quirky. LOW CARB: Okay, on to the most important thing: the food. I got the rib tip combo meal with a big hot link. Both were excellent. The rib tips were amazingly tender and lathered in generous amounts of a sweet sauce. Great taste. My hot link was huge and flavorful. For some reason, it reminded me of a big blood sausage. Good stuff. Unfortunately, you can't get any meat without sides. And all of the sides are plants. So in addition to my meats, I received and payed for unwanted carbohydrates of coleslaw, white bread toast, and a huge mountain starchy of fries. Those all came home with me to feed the Blue Jays and the Squirrels. That was kind of a waste of food but I had no choice about the high starch carbohydrate sides. I like this place. The meats are great. But it's a little frustrating if you eat low carb. It would be awesome if these guys sold meat by the pound, like many of the other BBQ joints. Oh, well. I've been here a couple of times and the food is good bbq. I love their rib tips. The big detractors are that 1) there's no online ordering, which is just absurd at this day and age. 2) Their listed phone number is disconnected, so forget about ordering in advance which leads to 3) their food prep is slow af. Facility is filthy. No inside service. Waited a half hour for food. Food needs to be investigated by the department of health. Very obvious that this owner does not invest in his business. Ordered a large rib tip. The sides included french fries for one. 4 half slices of white bread and a tablespoon of colesaw. All for $39. What a rip off. I got the rib tips, brisket sandwich, and the three chicken wings. Rib tips were the best I have had. These tips were meaty and had a good amount of sauce. I did not feel like I had to work at the tips to get the meat off which was awesome! Brisket sandwich was delicious. A lot of meat on the sandwich and wonderful flavor with the right amount of sauce. Chicken wings were good; very moist and decent size. I was not as into the seasoning salt on them and have had better flavored batter, but they were still good. Fries were crispy after getting home in the take away container. Wow! That never happens, but Amos & Amos fried them well. The BBQ sauces were delicious too. I have been here several times and will be back again. I really like how this place is open year round, and always seems to be busy. The burger I had really tasted like it came off the grill, with that charbroiled taste to it. Also, their fries really do have that fresh taste to it. Wow, I drove 45 minutes to get ribs and was highly disappointed. I was told it would be ready in 30 minutes and ended up waiting 51 minutes. The food was just okay. The ribs were not as tender as they could have been and I order the "Southern Sweet Potato Pie" and it was anything but. The crust was burnt and it was tasteless. They have all of these daily deal signs on the walls and building but refuse to honor any of them. When you try to patronize a small business this is what you get. SUMMARY Good food for a good price, but call before you get there so you don't have to wait in the limited parking area. FOOD I got the pulled pork sandwich and my wife got the rib tips. The sauce they used was very tasty, and the pulled pork was very saucy. Do keep some napkins on hand since this will get messy; it's barbeque after all. One thing we did notice is that you may end up getting a lot of fat with your meat. While tasty, my sandwich felt like I was eating more fat than I would like. Even then, I still preferred the pull pork over Famous Dave's. Next time I'll have to try the ribs. If it tastes anything like the pulled pork then it will be good. SERVICE This isn't fast food. The few times I've been there it took about 15-20 minutes for the order to be ready, and this is with no one else there. This isn't a bad thing though, it's just better to order before hand if you are in a hurry. They are very friendly and even walked my food out to my car when I was waiting. AMBIANCE & PARKING They take your order at the window, and there is no indoor dining. There is a covered outdoor area where you can park, but it can only hold about 8 cars max. Also, the owner's car occupies one of these spots. It goes without saying that this isn't a place to sit and eat (not even outdoors). When you get there, it's best to drive around the building so that you can just drive out when leaving. They have a convenient sign to point you in the right direction, but you don't see the sign when approaching from the west. read more

Great ribs, friendly and helpful staff, reasonable prices. Carry-out joint with a small picnic table out front. Hands down some of the best ribs I've had in the Twin Cities. Half slab rib dinner was massive, came with fries, toast, and a tiny cup of coleslaw. Coleslaw was good, so were fries but would have gladly traded some of the fries for more coleslaw. Wish they had a little more variety for the sides, would love some potato salad or mac n' cheese. Definitely recommend this place, especially since this it's hard to find BBQ in this side of Minneapolis. read more

This isn't your new and upcoming "gourmet" food stand...this is down home southern BBQ. A husband and wife own it - they make everything themselves: dry rub, BBQ sauce, coleslaw, sweet potato pie. Everything is good, not great - but different and yummy. They park their trailer on the north west corner of Penn and Golden Valley Rd - park either on Penn or in the same empty lot as the trailer itself. They sell limited items: Pork ribs, beef rib tips, chicken, fish or shrimp. Dinners come with fries and coleslaw. That's it. There are no tables and their hours are from Noon until 10PM. The store is a little drive in setup. Yet it hide some of the best BBQ i have had. The guys behind the window are friendly and will gladly help you out with anything you are looking for. And unlike other places, the pictures of the food are actually what you will get. Decided on the pulled pork sandwich as it was just me today, yet they have full slabs of St. Louis style ribs for sale, will have to try that next for sure. The pulled pork was tasty and flavorful, the sauce was smokey and slightly sweet and very flavorful. The fires were crisp and seasoned, yet not dry, The Slaw was actually tasty, that statement means more then it seems, as i HATE slaw. Yet I looked down and found out i ate it all. Food is decent but their service is really long, which probably explains why I went at lunch time and there was only one lady ahead of me and we still waited 15 minutes for our food. I thought I'd gotten a brisket plate but I ended up getting a sandwich? Not sure where the confusion lay but eh... They should really work up their side variety, your only options are fries or coleslaw.... and I think 85% of the population hates coleslaw, myself included. On top of it it's not exactly cheap, ended up paying $13 for a brisket sandwich and fries. Not my idea of fast comfort food. For the price and quality I'd much rather go to Dickey's, which surprised me thoroughly when I tried it for the first time recently. read more

Don't drive by too fast or you will surely miss it. This tiny shack, is pumping out some delicious BBQ. I would advise calling ahead to place your order or you may have to wait 30 min over dinner.. But the with made to order ribs, brisket and rib tips it is well worth the wait. In my opinion I would of wished that my ribs and rib tips didn't have to swim in a vat of sauce cause I am a bigger fan of a dry rib and putting on how much sauce I like. A buddy and I were driving through looking for some dinner and decided to stop and check it out. They make the food fresh to order, so call ahead if you don't want to meander around the parking lot for 15 minutes. I got the chicken sandwich, which was fried perfectly and tasty. Buddy got the special which was pulled pork sandwich, he described as immaculate. Both came with the right amount of perfectly seasoned fries. I have heard this spot gets crowded near midday, so I called in ahead of time. I mean, after all I was in dire need of a new good southern style barbecue joint. I ordered the pulled pork & half rack of ribs with sides of slaw, fries, and toast *with extra bbq sauce* The cooks were warm and friendly, taking me in as one of their own. I felt I was a part of the family before I even got my food. After many smiles, laughs, and yes - even hugs, I sat down and my eyes started to swell with tears of joy and salivation. The pulled pork was tender, soft, and amazing. The sauce wasn't overly thick or ketchup based... it has a southern vibe to it.. perfect viscosity. I was on cloud nine. The ribs were also excellent, not as smokey as I normally like, but that was a good thing. The slaw was a small sample size, and if i could, I would have spread it on everything. My sandwich, ribs, pancakes, EVERYTHING. It was superb. I will be back and baby I cannot wait. After all, we are family now! read more

Let me start off by saying I am from Kansas City so I went in with very low hopes. With that being said, they somehow still managed to disappoint me! The hotlink was stiff and dry, and from what I could taste it was lacking in flavor too. The rib tips were nothing to write home about, but at least they were edible... Smells like weed there and people were smoking pot openly. I was told my order would be ready in 20 minutes, 25 minutes later said it would be another 10 minutes, then came and said it would be another 7 minutes because they made the order wrong; after I waited an hour the food was finally ready. They offered me two cans of coke for my wait. I said I should get my money back, they gave me my money back but then wouldn't give me the food. I said forget it and just took the food. When I got home I realized they forgot some of my order. I live two blocks from here and will never go back. read more

Love the fact that this is the original location that was in Minneapolis, I love their food selection, and I also like the fact that the owner himself gets in there and cooks, nothing like an owner that is passionate enough to still get back in the kitchen and cook. With good there is always bad, and I will mention a few of the reasons I gave this establishment 3 stars. I wish they had desert, I have brought a few friends here and they wanted desert, not a biggie for me but still something to consider. I wish they had a better menu for those that don't eat pork, not many beef products and zero turkey products. Last but not least I wished they had towelettes because I feel all barbecue places should carry these, especially since this establishment isn't able to offer dine in. I will still visit this long time barbecue establishment but I would probably frequent more if a few things were changed. read more

It was worst ever visit. I visited the place 3 different times. I still have not gotten what I was looking for beef ribs. Friday , they were out and needed an hour or more before they could have have it ready. Sunday they say they are open till 8 pm. I stopped by at 6 pm the sign said open but no one answered. Come Monday. Place is open manned by a kid. 10 mins later he says. " the guy is out. He would be back in 10 mins". This is awful. Plain and simple awful. read more

Have seen some buzz about this place and had to try it out. Being in the old little A&W building didn't deter me. Best BBQ I had during a trip to Kanas City was from a few cobbled shacks in the middle of nowhere. Great Bbq doesn't need a fancy building. Caught them on a bad day when they were having to close up early because the evening crew was a no show. But was able to get an order of the half slab of beef ribs - 3 bronto style bones. They were out of the slaw, so lost a star there. But! What I got was delicious! If this is what they put out on a bad day, can't wait to come back on a good one. Ribs were meaty, sauce was good without overpowering the ribs. Complemented them. And some great smoke. Good helping of fries that were well seasoned, but not salty. Love BBQ and always looking for a place find some different takes. I look forward to working my way through their menu. read more

I had pork ribs from Amos & Amos last night and I can easily say that these were the best ribs I have ever had. The flavor of the sauce was great and the meat was so tender it fell off the bones. The cole slaw and fries were very good as well. I highly recommend this place to anyone who loves BBQ ribs. read more
