And it only took a few hours here and in the hotel pub, before I got the feeling that everyone who stays and/or comes here is also family, because that's truly how they treat you... only better, in some cases. It was pretty fantastic considering my group was all from so far away and spoke very little German, but even with a language barrier they took better care of us than 95% of the places of I've stayed. Our group took a particular liking to Ivan, the late 20-something son of the owners, who spoke more proper English than I could if I tried. Ivan got us all set up with our rooms, which had to be suites based on the size and amenities. This hotel is a stellar option for folks wanting to toggle back and forth between Cologne and Dusseldorf, as it's pretty close to being right smack in the middle between the two, just a short autobahn, train, bus trip away. Our room was basically bigger than my apartment and had TWO bathrooms. One with a small sink and private toilet, the other with a massive tub and shower and what was probably a 12ft marble vanity with dual sinks for getting ready. The room also had 2 full-length mirrors, ultra comfortable beds, was stocked with fresh fruit, bottled water of the flat and bubble variety, BIDET, free wi-fi (though it was a bit spotty on our floor), and they had an in-room pants press machine... which is something I'd never seen before. Almost made me wish I owned nice pants. There's a lovely restaurant on the first floor that offers a variety of beer, wine, and spirits and hands-down the best German food encountered our entire trip. The atmosphere couldn't be beat -- it was like a German Cheers, but with a a nice dining room as well for family functions and special occasions, and they're open early in the morning for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and into late night... come to think of it, I don't know if they actually ever close. AND they even made special off-the-menu vegetarian food for myself and 2 of my friends... which we did not expect at all, but they insisted and it was tremendous in every way. The hotel has only a handful of rooms and no elevators, and because the building is a historic one, the halls and stairs are rather thin, steep, and winding, but it works for Hotel Höttche. I was surprised at how quiet it was in the Inn portion of the building given the lively good times happening in the pub, but you couldn't hear a thing and our room was the only one on our floor so we basically had the top floor and the back staircase to ourselves. The atmosphere feels old school and authentic and I'd challenge you to find a nicer bunch of folks. A solid 5-stars for Hotel Höttche.

Another plus is its walkable distance to Düsseldorf Central Train Station - just about 8 minutes on foot. The entire building is renovated and modern, and the lobby is nicely decorated. The only noticeable minus for me was the very small and slow elevator, which a few times I had to wait for a couple of minutes. My check-in was fast and easy. The only small issue was that I didn't get the highest-floor room I was promised through Booking.com chat. A day before arrival, they confirmed they had reserved a 5th-floor room for me, but in the end, I didn't get it. Overall, the hotel's staff were nice and friendly. My Standard Single Room (#313) was the right size for one person, modern, stylish, and spotlessly clean. All the furniture was in perfect condition. I liked the large window, which let in plenty of natural daylight, and it could be opened fully for fresh air. The city view from my room was also lovely. The twin bed was very comfortable. The hotel provided a couple of free bottles of water along with tea bags and coffee. I liked the closet section with a luggage bench, refrigerator, and safe. The only minus was that there were just 4 hangers in there. The bathroom was beautifully designed - I absolutely loved it. The only downside was the very tiny shower stall. The amenities were the standard NH brand, and I liked both their quality and scent. I also really appreciated the modern and powerful hairdryer. The hotel's Wi-Fi worked very fast. For my stay I paid €56 per night (plus €3 per night city tax), and I found this rate very reasonable for the overall high quality of the hotel. I can absolutely recommend this NH Hotel for a stay in Düsseldorf, especially if your goal is to be in the city center and close to the Central Train Station.

Added to that are little complimentary bottles of lotion, shower gel and shampoo. There wasn't much counter space in the bathroom though. Now, for the cons- the mattress was very hard and I had a rough night sleeping and woke up with a sore neck/back. We were put on the 2nd floor and apparently windows are thin so we could hear people talking outside late at night. And then of course, we were awoken by LOUD construction noise. Apparently the next building over, they're doing major construction and our room happened to be closest to it. Imagine awakening up to that at 7:30am. I wish they would've placed us in the opposite side of the hotel! WiFi is very spotty but you can upgrade to a higher speed if you want. The staff was really nice.

We were greeted by the owner/manager Petra, who went out of her way to help us. Even stopping traffic when I had to back up the car in a one way street. The rooms are very clean and modern. Two beds side by side and a third is a bunk bed. Emergency refreshments are available at no cost. We also received passes for free public transportation. I needed to check in and print boarding passes for our next morning's flight. Petra did that for us in two minutes. There is an umbrella in each room. A very nice touch, and unfortunately needed because it was raining that day. Cannot say enough about the service level. Parking is available just 100 yards away at a different hotel. The real early morning drive to the airport without any traffic to speak of, took just 15 minutes. We will be back.

But she was so nice , she came back to your dear narrator with a shit ton of bread, some deli meats, a salad, and of course my wobbly pop.
