If I could take away my one star, I would. This hotel is ghetto, dirty and un-kept. The smell of weed is overwhelming strong in all areas of the hotel. No matter what deal you are getting, it's definitely not worth the stay and you will highly disappointed. Our 1st room was dirty, toilet was broken, air conditioner broke in the middle of the night. 2nd room had mold in the bathroom, hair in the bathtub and in the bed. I was charged an additional 200 dollar for service and fees that I didn't agree on nor notified about when booking the room, while doesn't include the 100 dollar hold per night for incidentals and 36 dollars to park your car with them. I do not know where to begin. This was a horrible experience. My daughter checked in first had to immediately get a different room due to uncleanliness. I arrive the next day, the room was still not to my expectations. I asked for the manager he was cordial he did get me in another room and added a $75 food credit. No store on site for water, snacks etc. I was told to go to CVS if I needed anything. I was advised it's under new management so hopefully it will get better. Went here for husbands work event. Parking and location very easy to find since we went here last year. Hotel concierge was friendly and normal when we checked in. Room was organized and neat. Everything was in their proper place. No complaints about the hotel nor staff. Honestly, I booked this hotel prior to reading the reviews & I GOT SCARED! Unfortunately, I wasn't able to cancel so I brought extra $ with me to Houston, in case I decided to stay elsewhere after checking in. My room was really clean. No hair in the shower, etc. I checked in around 5pm & the staff was extremely nice. Sean was so courteous to answer my questions & explain things thoroughly, especially with changes in how they operate during Covid. The couch fabric should be reupholstered (or even just like steam cleaned ) that's why I took 1 star off. I just put a sheet over to use it. Someone stated in a review to park at CVS for free parking. That's exactly what I had my best friend do when he came to visit me/pick me up. No issues at all. I walked to the galleria twice. Took less than 10 mins walking. There's a lot of good restaurants around! I needed extra cups & the housekeepers were in the hallway & very happy to give me anything extra I needed. I got my deposit back the next morning after checking out with no problems. (It's $100 per night you're staying ... I stayed 3 nights so I paid a $300 deposit, just be prepared that) Overall, I'd stay at Hotel Derek every time I come visit! read more

So many issues we had a flickering light bulb that had to be addressed twice amateur patch work jobs. This WAS our corporate standard hotel to stay at when anyone in my company travels to our Houston office. I haven't been here for over 4 yrs. (2018) when I booked this trip, I was so excited to be back in this office and back at Hotel Derek. I flew in on Monday and had to go right to my office before checking in, and when I mentioned to my local operations manager, that I was staying at Hotel Derek. He was like "ohhh they have gone downhill, and I haven't heard good things about the hotel lately". and the last person our 'CHRO' had to change hotels... I was disappointed to hear, BUT I took the chance, and was going to Give hotel Derek the benefit of the doubt. I Was so looking forward to it. Well... OUT THE GATE it was a bad start. I Arrive at the hotel to park and find the garage is NO longer part of the hotel and I have to pay separately which is a tremendous pain. Super Confusing, and it was NOT easy to just simply pay for the LENGTH of my stay. I still don't know if I paid properly. I didn't get towed, So I guess I did it correct. The garage elevator was nasty!! and needed a cleaning, the Sliding DOOR from the garage to the hotel was BROKEN (it was fixed Thursday night) which was good, then I showed up roughly around 5pm on Monday, to check in, my reservation, which was made Nov 9th, through our corporate travel agent we use ALL THE TIME, couldn't be found, even though I had confirmation numbers, and a confirmation. The front desk person was super helpful, and setup me up, None the less. I get up to my room, and can't remember what time breakfast started, and I was excited to see if Alma was still working at the hotel, she was always just a basket of sunshine!! and such a great smiling face first thing in the morning. I pressed the guest services button and tried calling Guest services probably about 7 or 8 times, of which it went un-answered EVERY TIME! this was around 6/7pm I gave up. Woke up the next morning at 6am, AND AGAIN tried the Guest service button 3-4 times. to again NO ONE ANSWERING! I tried dialing 0, and someone picked up, to which they said "guest services" I was like oh ok, what time does breakfast start. she's like... 8am I think... I was very upset to hear that, I'm a business traveler and I cannot sit around a hotel waiting for breakfast till 8am, I am certain when I was here last in 2018, it was NOT that late, as I had breakfast every morning, last time I stayed here. so, I had to travel out for breakfast every morning. Instead of Eating at the hotel. (I still don't know if Alma still works for the hotel) I never got to get to sit around for breakfast at 8am In addition, I had internet in my room for roughly 30 mins when I arrived and NEVER had it again after that, AT ALL! I was going to try and call guest services to complain, BUT I figured no one would answer anyway! My Tub in my room had a constant drip the tub was dirty with rust stains. the ceiling of the bathroom was dirty or has mold on it (room 817) in addition to a BLACK stain on the carpet as soon as you walk in the room I do have to say, the bar was good, the bartender was good, could have been a little friendlier, I still don't know his name. food at the bar was great definitely still a good quick dinner meal. The last thing I noticed, I walked through the lobby, probably, 10-15 times during my stay, AND I think I saw someone actually standing behind the front desk, maybe twice!! NOT counting when I checked in! When I checked out, it was 620am There was NO one to be found, I saw a gentleman mopping the floor, I asked him is ANYONE here, he said yes hang on went and knocked on the door behind the front desk, and a women came out. She proceeded to throw an "express" checkout box on the counter and ask me if I needed an invoice. I said yes please I would like to check out, she was very nice once she came to help me, but definitely, seems like she didn't want to be bothered. Not to mention that I can't recall how many times there was someone actually AT the front desk!!! This was a Very disappointing stay and I more than likely WILL NOT BE BACK! it is very sad to me, because I used to ENJOY coming TO hotel Derek, because it wasn't your average Marriot hotel, and it was different and USED TO BE very enjoyable! Hotel & staff were horrible at best, the only friendly person was the bartender. We had to pay for parking $25 a day paid in full before we even checked in, and the charged me an extra $27. Walking through the hotel it smelled old and stale. Once checked into our room which was horrible by the way, it smelled old and stale as well. The room decor was from the 80's and we had a whole disco ball hanging in the corner, the bathroom lights didn't work and they had the nerves to sell a miniature bottle of champagne for $27 , cvs snacks were no less than $4.I gave 1 star only because it wouldn't let me do zero. read more

I have no idea why they spell derrick as Derek or where they got that name, but that is probably only because I tend to think in terms of oil and oil well derricks when in Houston. The only reason I ended up staying here was that the nearby Sheraton, just up the street, where I usually stay was packed full with some sort of convention like thing going on. The Derek is considerably less expensive than the Sheraton, not nearly as nice, with one of its biggest downsides being a certain lack of curtesy, refined manners and friendly politeness on the part of the staff. Also though it does have a restaurant, Revolve, I thought that the food fell somewhat short of that served in the Sheraton. Another thing is that one might want to be careful with regards to their personal possessions. I noted certain questions about that expressed in other yelp reviews and when I was at the Derek I indeed heard and spoke with a gentlemen who told me when he put a briefcase down on a table then, just stepped over to the nearby reception desk for a newspaper, his briefcase ended up having vanished. Though that certainly wasn't the fault of the hotel, caution might well be advised. The good parts of the Derek are its great location being just a J-walk cat corner away from the huge Houston Galleria Mall plus a good number of nearby excellent restaurants. Also, the rooms are rather decent in size and clean enough with a pleasant décor. They also, if you don't mind wandering around your room looking like a cow, have cow patterned bathrobes. I have no idea what that is all about, but this is Texas and I can only suppose them meant to be in keeping with ideas it being cattle country. Overall I'd say the Derek is OK as a hotel, nothing really special and I would go Three Stars on it but only going Two Stars because of the unpolished rather unmannerly staff. read more

This hotel was....meh. I've always dreamed of staying at this hotel. I was very disappointed. The lobby was nice and then that's where it ended. This is one of those hotels that looks nice at first glance. But then when you look closer it's dingy and old. Our room was nice. However, the minibar was not only empty but did not even work as a refrigerator. We had a call and ask for a new one which they brought up pretty quickly. They didn't have a cart so they brought it in on a rolling chair which I felt was weird. Also a room didn't have a microwave. When we called down to ask about it we were told we could rent one for $20. I thought this was very odd for our luxury hotel. Our hotel stay came with complimentary breakfast in the hotel restaurant. When we got there in the morning, the floor was so sticky everybody's shoes with sticking to it as they walked across it made a funny noise. Honestly, if I could give this hotel 0 stars I would. I highly suggest that anyone considering staying at this hotel read through the comments because the negative reviews are all very accurate. Before staying here for the weekend I always thought Hotel Derek was a luxury hotel - mainly because of the location. I have broken the review into 3 categories: SERVICE: I stayed in the hotel for 2 nights. During that time I had a question that came up on 3 separate occasions. Each time I had a question I attempted to call down to the service desk with no answer. This was especially frustrating because I had just walked through the lobby and knew for certain that there were people working the front desk. On the morning of my departure I had a very early start and wanted to set a wake up call. No one ever answered the phone to setup a wake up call not even an automated service. This is literally the first hotel I've ever stayed where I couldn't setup a wake up call. PARKING: The valet is $35+ tax so I opted do self parking in the garage. Upon arrival everything was fine. However when I left for the evening to grab dinner the elevator was out of service and I was parked on the 8th floor. There appeared to be service people working on the elevator so I didn't think it would be long before it was back up & running - WRONG! The elevator was out the entire weekend which meant going up on down several flights of stairs in the sweltering heat of the stairwell. For $25 a night I would expect a working elevator at minimum. Upon departure I had to carry luggage up 8 flights of stairs. BATHROOM: The door to the bathroom did not fully close and the knob was missing. The door handle on the bathroom was covered up by a piece of plywood. Overall I can't believe how disappointing this experience was. I travel about 50% of the time for work and stay overnight in hotels often. This has to rank amongst the worst I've stayed in all time. read more

Hotel Derek is one of the few properties that I've been to within the US that conveys the impression of being a work of art. Very relaxed and professional staff, comfortable rooms and amenity features, and a lobby area that is quite memorable. The restaurant food choices are exceptional (in my opinion), albeit a little pricey. For example, I paid $10 before tip for a triple expresso and a doughnut. $4.60 of that $10 was just for the doughnut. The restaurant employee actually talked me into it, so I said, why not? There is a restaurant buffet within that would put any other hotel's buffet to shame! Well worth the stop before you make your way out to shop on Westheimer. And if the traveler didn't know, Hotel Derek is within walking distance of The Galleria (if you wanted to do that). Also, the hotel seems to have strictly valet parking, which can range anywhere from $18-40 if staying overnight. Nonetheless, the room rates for this hotel are fairly reasonable, given how and who you booked your room with. They can go from $129-169 easily, which is Westin Oaks or Westin Galleria rates. While Hotel Derek is not a boring hotel nor is it in the design of more traditional stalwarts such as The Westin, Marriott or Sheraton, it is a hotel designed for those that want a taste of something new. I stayed at this hotel for 3 nights. During all four days, I experienced great service by all employees: the receptionist, the waitress for breakfast, the security guard, the cleaning personnel... all were amazing. Whenever I needed something, people took care of me immediately. I know that the hotel was busy accommodating many customers, but I definitely felt cared for. Moreover, the room itself was great. I didn't find any problems with the hotel itself; the bathroom was clean, the bedding was comfortable, and the interior of the hotel room was very well-decorated. Tina and Alma were amazing. However we walked out to 3 men trying to steal or truck. They pulled a gun on us, and the hotel was not bothered at all. When the police arrived they informed us that they come multiple times a day for break ins. This place is not safe at all. My first night the shower didn't work so I called down to get it fixed When I came back it worked but later that day I go in the restroom to see the shower fell off. You can hear your neighbors all too well in the rooms nearby. There were stains on the orange couch and around the bed frame. I walked into my room and the room was an room that had not been cleaned it! The shower was wet like someone just had took a shower and there was hair everywhere! Because as I get off the elevator to go to my now THIRD ROOM! In two days it was three employees talking in the way along with 7 firefighters because something happened! The women which I think was the manager quickly asked me is my room on this floor and quickly was trying to get me out the hallway! I felt soo uncomfortable that I didn't even want to bring my niece to the room where we were to be staying!! All this in the mid of a Global pandemic! What an absolutely horrible stay. We had gotten married on 5/23/2020 and wanted a fun getaway for 2 nights as a staycation. We arrived on 5/23 around 9:00 pm after our wedding. We were greeted by a line around the block of parked cars and no valet. We were instructed that self park was around the block, which was included in our price ($25 a day). There were no signs to indicate this. This parking garage is pay by app only. There are no attendants or gate arms to pay. Anyone can go in at any time and it is NOT limited to guests of the hotel. We were greeted with rows and rows of parked cars with no parking until the 8th level (of 8). When grabbing our bags and walking to the hotel, we found that the garage elevator was being held by people messing around in the elevator. We took the stairs. Every level. Every. Darn. Level. Was filled with people smoking weed in the stairwell and in their cars. When we got to the hotel doors after walking down the pot infested stairwell in the garage they were locked for security reasons. We walked out of the garage, and around the half the block to the front of the hotel. We were greeted by 2 couples openly smoking no more than 5 feet from the doors. We walked to the front desk to find that the front desk was manned by 2 employees. There was a line. When we got to the front of the line it was so loud with peoples voices we couldn't even here the employee regarding our room. We were placed on the 14th floor With a view of the parking garage for $134 a night. When walking to the elevators there were approximately 15 people grouped in the lobby. No social distancing was observed. They're was a broken glass vodka bottle blocking the entrance to the elevators that we had to walk over. When stepping off the elevator on the 14th floor we were overcome by the cigarette and weed smoke in the hallway. We walked to our room, past rooms that had their doors propped open with loud music blaring. At this point I was in tears. This was not what I had expected. We entered our room which was large and nicely equipped but showed obvious rough wear. This did not make up for the check in experience. We woke up early and promptly shortened our stay and checked out. We informed the desk clerk of our disappointment and she was kind and adjusted our stay (but did not offer to comp our stay.) I specifically asked her what capacity the hotel was at and it was at 60% total capacity. Which was technically against the mandates set by the city for Covid 19 at the time. I wanted to get our as quickly as I could so I did not force the issue. When walking to our car in the morning we saw many alcohol bottles on the ground and overflowing trash cans. This hotel claims to be a 4 star hotel. It's not even close. I travel to Houston regularly and have stayed in the Galleria area for over a decade. This was the first time I tried this hotel due to what appeared to be advantageous price. Well, the old saying you get what you pay for applies here. The employees here don't understand customer service. To start, this hotel has maintained the Covid policies of no housekeeping services unless requested. No mention of this during check in but I saw a document on the counter that referenced this and indicated they will provide housekeeping services every other day of your stay. I requested housekeeping at that moment after reading the document. As you might expect, no services so I called the front desk the morning of the second day and wanted to confirm my services. I was told quite rudely there was no way to get a housekeeper to my room that day (all day). They could provide towels so I agreed. Later that day, I returned to my room and not surprisingly, no towels. I called again and the gal at the front desk assured me that towels would be brought up as soon as possible. Returned from dinner, and you guessed it, no towels. I tried on three different occasions after dinner to call the front desk and no one is answering any calls. Instead of walking down to the lobby to request towels for the fourth time as a result of no house keeping services, I decided to write this review. Other small issues that on their own are no big deal but cumulatively signal poor management and lack of customer centric culture include bathrooms in the lobby are locked and not functional, restaurant closed for lunch, no where to get a drink (during the day) or bottle of water in this hotel, facilities on the first floor abandoned, rooms dirty/have not been maintained, rips in the couch in the room, elevators don't work in the parking garage... I could go on.... Long story short, stay clear from this hotel. Lots better options in the Galleria. It was empty all week so I guess I didn't get the message before booking. This hotel was nothing short of beautiful inside and it certainly is very well decorated. However like other reviewers have warned, they upcharge for everything! There is a $15+ tax service fee that is automatically charged for using the wi-fi, the fitness facility, and the pool. If you use their SELF-PARK garage it's $25. Valet is also outrageous at around maybe $35? If using the self-parking garage and their amenities, expect the added total to your bill to be 43.30. I was looking at the older reviews and it looks like parking increases every year FYI. Even the cost for a cheap hair comb and travel size toothbrush and toothpaste in the room was about $10. I have never seen something like that before in my experience with staying at hotels. I would only pay for this amount to maybe take pictures at the hotel otherwise save your money! There are other hotels at the same price that are also modern, clean, and have free parking. Also there is most likely no service fee added to your bill to use their amenities. read more

Gross place, they put us on a hall that was painted the day prior. Thankfully they moved us, however, we then dealt other guests loudly arguing in the hall at 3 am. As well as a strong weed odor. Lastly, while waiting for my significant other to use the hotel lobby restroom, the valet manager asked me to move my vehicle forward slightly to be out of the way of oncoming valet traffic. I complied, seconds passed and he asked me to go and park in the back, to which I replied that my person is using the restroom and will be out shortly, I then told him I would call her to hurry up. He them walked away, a few seconds pass, and he comes back rips my door open and leans in to pull me out of the car. I then scream at him and luckily another valet employee came over and calmed him down and nicely had me move to a even better spot to wait for my person. Check in was easy process. Our son was arriving at a later time and was able to check him in and they awaited for his arrival with his key while we were out. Our room was really hot and they immediately came up to to see what to do, they ended up moving us to another room, up and still provided us with a view. Add on packages to the room were not available. No valet parking. Covid has really affected the place. Not worth the price for what it is now. So I booked this hotel on a whim when my boyfriend and I decided to go on a trip to Houston. After spending the money on Expedia, I came to yelp to look at the reviews, only to see that they were mostly one star! Immediately, I tried to get a refund and cancel and find a different hotel, but they had a no refund policy. I had a two star experience. The TV was nice, the bed was pretty comfortable, and the location was good. As for the rest of the hotel, I thought it was pretty dirty, and seemed cheap. There was a half eaten chicken wing In the elevator and the whole place smells like cologne. The parking situation was pretty annoying to, because it was expensive. There wasn't a microwave in our room, There wasn't a working fridge either. We had leftovers but we just let them sit out overnight because what else were we gonna do LOL. Also it is not quiet, people party all night here. Definitely won't be returning and Wouldn't recommend this place to my friends. read more

Looks pretty pleasing on Hotel.com. I took a one day trip and was supposed to go home the same day. But I was tired so I stayed the night. Staff was friendly. But woke up to my truck window broken in to and along with 2 other vehicles. Hotel isn't responsible but it was paid parking and you needed a parking pass to get in and out but that wasn't the case. Gates were open all night. Security said she checked all the parking lot floors except the floor that 3 trucks got broken in to.. 1 star for friendly staff but that's it. read more

This hotel is overrated. No microwaves on property and we found gum under the bedside table. My husband did not like the limited breakfast, $23 fee but only used $10 worth and wanted to charge for a second plate. They also did not accommodate us for our honeymoon. For a hotel so expensive you would think they would have done better. read more

Great front desk staff, horrible unnecessary fees that didn't make sense especially since all of the amenities that were charged for were not used at all, therefore i think the fee should be refunded right at checkout or the amenities should be taken out of the incidental fee that is taken at check-in read more

from the manger, staff and security.. by far the worst hotel experience we've had. the staff was aggressive and absolutely not customer centric. we had a total of 5 rooms, and they had least amount of courtesy. As a group we don't recommend this hotel and Hope ownership does something about management. read more

The worst hotel ever! Hype is all they have! Rooms are absolute disaster, shower faucet almost fell off. Sink I had to fix myself to actually make water go down. Bathtub was clogged, and faucet was leaking, not fully locking so it would just drip. When I called to complain, they send us technician ( @9 pm). So we couldn't just relax, plus had a baby with us, we had to wait till they finish fixing this issues. Nothing was fixed, we couldn't shower it kept leaking. 'Manager on duty' that's what she called herself said that we should move rooms, but oh well there are no rooms so s basically suck it up dear customers and we can not offer you anything else. I don't even want to start how receptionist was racist. Absolutely disrespectful to me and my husband. Did not explain a thing to us like any receptionist would( like check out time, breakfast, where to park(parking btw was also different from fine print), where is the room etc.. normal requirements) however she did explain all details and was super nice to the couple before us. They only respect black people, which I have nothing against. My family is very multicultural and it was fist time ever experiencing such a racism in my life. All night we only smelled weed. Reminder i had a baby with me, what kind of BS is that? Like someone was legit smokin in my room. Horrible!! Oh, we also got 'city view room'. Well let me tell you, our view was building of garage parking. Definitely no city there. Very very very disappointed and never will come back and definitely will go further that just this review. Where to start, overcharged and underserviced. The only two people, bar lady and the breakfast lady were nice. My suite 1401, Wrangler suite, was less than that. Scalding hot water, balcony door wouldn't lock, dripping faucets from BOTH bathrooms. Jacuzzi bath didn't work either. When I told the lady at front desk about the issues she OFFERED TO DO NOTHING ABOUT IT. She gladly took my money didn't give a receipt and when I asked about the maintenance person she said nothing could be done. I would like my money back, wouldn't stay here again!!! This was a horrible surprise for our anniversary weekend!!!! My health and safety didn't matter with this company. Do not stay here. read more
