I won't go into great detail other than, It's been almost a week since ive tried contacting the hotel and after 5 attempt, I still have yet to get a call back from either Gustavo (Hotel Mgr) or Alejandro (who knows what title - Mgr). The front desk has been more than helpful, but their idiot management team has yet to call me back to clear up....their mistake. I was already billed for my stay, but these jackasses can't figure out how to dismiss this pre-authorized charge they put on my card, and mind you...without my consent. My Card, Citi bank told me that they can't cancel the charge until the Merchant releases it....or, after 30 days...lol...Unbelievable!!! Not Citi Banks fault...it's just their protocol. After 30 days, it's then disputed and the merchant will be charged some fee or whatever. I travel abroad monthly...and have never been treated like this...ever. Yes, yes...gold plated problem...I know...But these two jackasses are just inconsiderate, unprofessional morons. I love Marriot and Hilton...hell, even the IHC across the street is nice. given the current state of management here, I would strongly NOT recommend this property to anyone. They are incredibly inept and what's worse, they can't even return a call to remedy, their mistake. Unbelievable. I now have Marriot corporate working on this to resolve...it's truly sickening it had to come to this.

However my experience this time was not well balanced. The restaurant and amenity areas are nice as expected, but the rooms are just like any other hotel...nothing fancy. My room clock was an hour behind and I could not change it to the right time (iHome HBN20). My biggest problem was checking out. Spent 20 min on line until I got an alert on my Marriot app that I could check out on line, which I immediately did and just left my key on the front desk. I felt bad for the others who had to wait. Not coming back, I will try a different brand in this city.

Checking in was easy, but not very friendly. It includes breakfast, they serve a complete buffet 7-10am. Omelette station, fruits, fresh juices, a few dishes, pastries. I have no complaints about food. Room was ok, flat screen tv, semi-clean. Bathrooms are really small. I ran out of toilet paper and shampoo a couple times, one day I didn't get ANY towels, I had to call the front desk to get some. One of the rooms has a small balcony, but it was really dirty. It even had broken glass on the ground. There is a tiny gym on the 6th fl, and outdoor swimming pool w/ jacuzzi on the roof, small too. View from 7th floor is really cool. This hotel needs better customer service, and they need to do better with cleaning.

The restaurant is decent and old school (waiters in uniform, etc.) no cuisine awards to be won, but it's economical and hygienic. Don't expect the coffee to be good....actually, that goes for %80 of México, unless you are in the coast and places like Xalapa, Coatepec, tampico, etc. I gave it four stars because of the value and location. Trust me, being in Querétaro (and many other Spanish colonial towns) it's like being in NYC. You get the crappiest hotel and "go to town", enjoy the sights and sounds.

Not only that, the breakfast was awesome when I wasn't too early for it! The van took me severely spots saving me after a couple days of über eats fees, and stops at nearby gas stations. The rooms were clean and the only issue I could see is they hired a cheap contractor for the bathrooms that clearly have no clue how to grout. If you're too early for breakfast they offer breakfast bags, Just inform them, and enjoy the pool while you're at it (they have a hot tub, but can't figure out why bent in Phoenix and all). They also have a lot of convenient drawers in the bathroom and bedside that I forget to take pictures of that made my stay more convenient than any other hotel since I began my airline journey along with normal AC plugs and USB next to the bed! This is one of the more comfortable beds I've slept in as a flight crew in a while, so check them out! I only take a star away because three of the drivers were very rude. They wouldn't even acknowledge thanks for rides, took an hour to pick us up once, and some didn't want to help with bags. Felix was awesome though!

The photos online are accurate. The location is amazing. The design of wood planks, stone and plenty of greenery is well thought through. The service was actually quite good, with an efficient checkin and kind people. Here are the key reasons why I wouldn't be able to return to Hotel Criol. The bedding is extremely uncomfortable, from sheets to mattress to the pillows. The pillows are all synthetic and there is no substitute available. I called the property ahead of booking to confirm there would be feather or down pillows, it was confirmed there would be in English and in Spanish, but none to be found even after discussing with front desk. For a hotel that isn't a hole in the wall and one of the most expensive options in Queretaro, that's just unacceptable. Getting a good night's sleep is the foundation of any hotel experience and all other things start to get overshadowed by that. The other thing that I've found quite unpleasant is the terrible smell that was present every day in all common areas, from courtyards to the pool. Not sure if it's garbage, chemicals, repellents or something else, but it was a large detractor. The room is nicely designed, with a slick sink, an excellent shower and of average size. It is pretty annoying that there is no central air conditioning and the air conditioner is quite noisy at night, making a lot of cracking and dripping noises when it works. There were plenty of contrasts. A beautiful library, yet a filthy dirty pool. Although design and service were excellent, this is not a property I'd return to. Foundational issue is the lack of comfort, composed of underlying problems. It's a 3 star hotel as a whole in hotel stars.
