My favorite thing about Mestizo Gallery Hotel is the location. It's in walking distance to many restaurants, a supermarket, shops, car rentals, bike rentals and two miles away from the Tulum Ruins. This made our vacation in Tulum easy to navigate!
The hotel itself is modern with a touch of charm. There's a beautiful garden in the foyer and wooden pieces decorated the stairway and railings. There's a festive restaurant right in the entrance. There's three floors that encompassed 25 rooms. We were given a room on the first floor which made it simple for us to get in and out. You are given complimentary water bottles and toiletries.
Our room was clean and tastefully decorated but felt cold because the room was grey and didn't have a window that looked outside. I was not a fan of the extra firm beds and communal like shower. The beds were uncomfortable and I didn't sleep well for the three nights we stayed. We kept our flip flops on in the shower - I wished there was a tub. Also, the only mirror in the room was a small oval above the sink. It was a challenge for three people to get ready in the morning. They should look into installing bigger, full-length mirrors.
We had dinner our first night at their restaurant and breakfast a few times. We were offered a welcoming drink which was great. For dinner, we were served a fish + tomato dip with chips - which we really liked! I've never had anything like it. We also tried their ceviche, fish fillet and shrimp dishes. The food was good but we preferred eating elsewhere in Tulum. We did notice a lot of locals visiting and each night there was a dinner party.
There was a complimentary breakfast each morning including a fruit plate, pastries and coffee, tea or orange juice. Their pastries were delicious, warm and fresh! We ordered eggs with our free breakfast which they cooked well. Try the Mexican eggs!
The hotel staff worked both the front desk and restaurant. They were friendly but at times we found it hard to communicate with them in English. The hotel offers bike rentals but we found cheaper rentals elsewhere. My review for Mestizo is actually 3.5 stars. We enjoyed our stay but there are many things they can approve on. read more
