I was a guest here last week and traveling during this pandemic is somewhat unsettling , but when I walked into the Hotel Paisano and was greeted by Paul, his demeanor was so wonderful that I was instantly comfortable and able to enjoy this beautiful hotel. I had a lovely room and pistachio encrusted fried steak. I went and saw the Marfa Lights and enjoyed coming back and opening the doors that opened to the courtyard and hearing the sound of the fountain. I had a lovely stay. Thank you again Paul. Stopped by to get food from the restaurant. As we walked in was told by the very young girl working your can't be in here'. Not a diplomatic approach. After figuring out we had to go around inside the hotel to order, we ordered food and a bottle of wine. We opened the bottle inside and poured it while waiting for take out, just like the other guests we saw. She told us we couldn't drink inside. So we went outside to sit. Then she came out and told us the table was for hotel guests only and we couldn't consume alcohol on the property. I pointed out that we were just waiting in our food and she told us we would have to leave and come back later to see if it was ready. Throughout all she was rude and offered no options on how to make the wait for The food less excruciating. No manager in sight. Avoid this pretentious establishment. read more

Hotel Paisano was just beautiful. It's got this movie star quality that just makes you feel fancy and welcome when you walk in. Like warm and happy sans the modern sharp edges that so many places seem to prefer now. The room was very nice, with a smaller bathroom as befits an historical building and furniture that seemed out of an old shop. They've got a cool patio with a fountain where several people enjoyed beverages for a good portion of the afternoon and wifi. The one odd hiccup in our stay was the laptop left behind by a guest. He totally forgot his laptop and what looked like several sales receipts in the closet in our room. Though they eventually came and got it, the people seemed relatively unconcerned about it and left it with us til morning. I would be super freaked to know that my stuff had been left with a total stranger. read more

Marfa was the last leg of our West Texas road-trip and we were sure tuckered out by this time. After spending quiet nights in Marathon and Terlingua, we were not excited to be immersed in the throngs of hipsterland for the Railroad Revival Tour, but we expected it none-the-less. We drove in early and arrived around 1 p.m. hoping we could check in before the 3 p.m. designated check-in time. The woman at the desk was so kind and called housekeeping to ask if our room was ready. They were cleaning the room and it would be ready in 15 minutes. Perfect! We browsed through the cute shops and made quick friends with another staff in the boutique shop. She showed eager interest in our experiences in the hill country because she would like to move this way. After dropping stuff off, taking a stroll around Marfa and happening across a cute photobooth set up outside an art studio, we headed to our room to lounge. Then, we boogied to get showered and ready for the concert at El Cosmico. I love the cute little bathrooms with vintage tiny sinks and wooden windows that open right up. [insert uber-fantastic, thrilling Railroad Revival Tour concert with Old Crow Medicine Band, Mumford & Sons, and Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros. I die.] After a fantastic show, we brought a bottle of wine down to the patio and enjoyed the cool weather and beautiful lighting. Then, a strange and random occurance brought us to a party happening elsewhere in the hotel in the biggest room I daresay Hotel Paisano has. It included a kitchenette, grand living room with fireplace, huge terrace patio (bigger than our entire room), master bedroom, half bath, full bath and sun room turned into another bedroom with two full cots. Wow. That was fun! :) Some other fun perks are the free coffee and apples set up in the lobby daily and an indoor pool. Loved my time here. read more

Let's get this out in the open - the Hotel Paisano is a *historic* hotel. Usually when I say this, it means that the lobby is beautiful and grand, but the rooms are scary and old and the hotel is resting on its laurels. However, when I am referring to the Paisno, what this means is the hotel has a cool lobby and courtyard and the rooms are slightly more modern than most historic hotels, but it's best not to go in with boutique hotel expectations. Let me explain: The room we stayed in, a Mezzanine Patio Room, had its own patio with a fireplace. The furnishings in the room were modern, nice, and clean but the bathroom could use a little TLC to bring it up to speed with the rest of the room. However, assuming that you spend more of your time in the room and on the patio, the bathroom situation is not out of control, it's just out of date. The Paisano has an awesome courtyard that adjoins the main lobby and the hotel restaurant (Jett's Grill). The courtyard boasts lots of seating, chimineas so you can have your own personal fire, and wireless internet access. The hotel is in close proximity to two popular Marfa restaurants - Maiya's (about three doors down) and Squeeze Marfa (around the corner). While I have not stayed there, I assume that the Thunderbird Hotel may be more modern than the Paisano, but the Paisano is steeped in history, gives you the option of your own personal fireplace, and is located a little closer to all of the action. I would definitely stay there again. read more

The Paisano is just beautiful, and was our favorite part of the trip to Marfa. You can almost hear the old swanky party music when you explore the common areas (check out the pool and private bar in the back). The room was clean and a nice balance of modern updates and charming coziness. The bed was VERY comfortable, and we had a room with a patio overlooking the courtyard that was a great place to people watch. Fair warning, if you're looking for a Hilton, you should probably stay somewhere else. There are some things that are to be expected when staying at a historic hotel that other reviewers don't seem to be aware of. Yes, the bathroom is small. Yes, if you look too closely at ANYTHING vintage, you will find flaws. You can always pay $150 to stay in an unairconditioned, no-shower-having Airstream trailer down the street at El Cosmico, next to the Border Patrol Station. read more

Our trip to Marfa started with a two night stay in one of the Hotel Paisano's Historic rooms. We did have our small dog along with us on the trip and the hotel does require a pet fee, but that wasn't a big deal for us. We were in room 233 and were surprised with how large the hotel room was (based on previous experience in "historic" rooms at other hotels that are quite small.) A large, comfortable bed, two night stands, and a writing desk were all in the main part of the room, with a small, but well appointed restroom en suite. The closet is small as well, but standard for most hotels. Original, double hung windows were in both the bedroom and bathroom and provided all the cooling we needed during our stay. A typical motel/hotel air conditioner is under the window in the room to provide cooling and heat when needed. The bathroom has a nice pedestal sink, and a tankless toilet with standard size bowl sitting adjacent to the large tub. A hairdryer is provided. A single period light fixture provides light for the bathroom (and the only outlet in the bathroom.) The sink provides enough space for a bar of soap, but there is no vanity (and little "countertop" space) in the bathroom. Our room had no view to speak of - it looked out at a service alley behind the hotel. The hotel does have WiFi available, and while it wasn't extremely fast, it did provide the internet needed to post photos to instagram and check emails when needed. The hotel has a beautiful lobby at ground level with several seating areas and large plate glass windows that look out to the courtyard. All of the hotel rooms require at least a walk up a short (~10) flight of stairs. The remainder of the rooms are on the second floor, up another fifteen or twenty steps. We didn't use the pool or fitness center, but both looked welcoming. The courtyard looked like it was the place to hang out in Marfa as there were people constantly sitting and relaxing and enjoying the center fountain. The hotel is a short walk to the town square, however there aren't any restaurants immediately nearby (other than Jett's Grill downstairs in the hotel.) There is a coffee shop called Frama around the corner next to the washateria. The staff was friendly throughout our stay and even had some milkbones to give our little dog. There is a pretty good selection of Marfa merchandise in the gift shop and gallery downstairs. The lobby and courtyard are open to those who aren't staying in the hotel - so it's worth a trip to visit and hang out for a little bit. read more

Wow, this place does not disappoint. The staff is so friendly and very helpful. I am on a road trip with my dog for his last week before going to sleep. Please come here if you want a real experience in Marfa. My brother and I checked out all the other hotels and this was a clear WINNER! I'd like to shout out my appreciation to Yessica and Joel. This is the place like sleeping at your favorite aunt's house! All comfy with that feel good vibe with a lot of history. Yes, this is where the cast from "Giant" stayed. For those of you too young to remember that movie, it was with all great actors and actresses that are not with us anymore! The courtyard has perfect lighting and shade so you can always find a space to hide from the sun or to warm your bones on that chilly day. The lobby and anterooms take you back to the days of old without you feeling like your sitting on grandma's couch covered in plastic. The fireplace room off to the side of the lobby will let you sit in peace and have that undisturbed conversation or nap. Rooms all have their own persona, for example the Rock Hudson suite has all that you would want for a private residence on vacation. read more

Stayed here for three nights in March. It is the only game in town, unless you don't mind outside entrances into hotel rooms. The hotel itself is beautiful - meaning the lobby, the floors, ceilings and the courtyard just calls you to sit for hours. The room itself (we were in room 230 with a huge balcony) were only okay. The carpets were dirty as was the bedspread. The bed was comfortable, but has dirty as the carpet and bedspread was, we tried not to think about the bed. We knew what we were getting into, that it was an old hotel and it was only desirable because the crew of Giant stayed there - which is why we decided to stay there - and in any minor or major metro area, they would be lucky to get $59 a night for their rooms. We paid $139/night. Again though, we wanted to stay there because of the history. We made this our daily launching point for visitst to Big Bend National Park and it was situation just right for that (assuming you like driving, which we were fine with). So we would stay there again, only for two reasons: 1 - the local restaurants (hard to believe, I know, but true) and 2 - location. There is a new Hampton Inn and Suites in Alpine, but we saw very few places to get a meal or go to a store if you needed something in Alpine. If you don't care about these two things, you'll be sorely disappointed with the hotel. Oh, before I forget, the house cleaning. I think the maids are employed only to change the towels and make the bed. The bathroom itself wasn't cleaned while we stayed in the room, evidenced by spots and hair on/in the sink and towels left from that morning's showers. And, the hotel isn't staffed between 10pm and 7am. In fact, the doors were left wide open so anyone could access the hotel. The pool - didn't get in it. The painting on the pool floor and the area looks great, but I can't say they were maintaining it. It was filthy. Having a pool at home I know how a well maintained pool should look - this wasn't it, so don't get your hopes up. read more

This hotel was about what I was expecting from a historic hotel in an area where there aren't a lot of options. The public areas are beautifully restored & very inviting. The front desk staff was nice & efficient, though we didn't have any requests or questions. The rooms are adequate, but definitely show their age and could use some updating. I personally love old school bathrooms (though this one was particularly small, or so it seemed - and I'm not particularly big!), since the bathtubs are usually a lot better for soaking, but scrubbing the mildew out of the corners and replacing badly cracked tiles would go a long way to improving the looks. The balcony patio was nice. If we were going to be back in this area & dead set on staying *in* Marfa, I'd come back - but we'll probably take a harder look at hotels in Alpine next time. read more

The staff was very friendly, the food was good, and the drinks were lovely. I liked wandering around the courtyard and lobby to take pictures and to relax. I would definitely stay here the next time I roll through Marfa. Lots of character in this hotel. read more

I went to Texas to get away. This was sort of the town to do it in. A sort of Carmel of Texas; lots of art galleries, top shelf restaurants, and scenery. The hotel is a historical landmark most famously filmed in "Giant". Its all over the lobby, James Dean, L. Taylor, Hudson and cowboys. I didn't see any cowboys there. The rooms are kept in an original state. So be ready for some charm. All the bed sheets are clean and furniture new and artsy. Sort of Texan modern. Lot of raw steel being used. I got to know the maintenance guy a bit, as its an old building. No big surprises, but if you're not a handy person, its a put off. Luckily, I travel with my multi tool. As for the bed, it was way too soft for me. It was like sleeping on tofu, but a caveat to my opinion on beds. I sleep on Asian style mats, which is built like a boxing mat. So, any bed giving an inch is soft ... There is a nice pool, good restaurant, free wi fi, small flat screen, and very nice outdoor patio. The summer nights everyone can enjoy live local music. Staff was very helpful and friendly. For a first time visit, the Paisano was fun. I think there are other places in town that could use a try as well. read more

The lobby area is a nice spot to hang out in front of the fireplace, or browse the shops. Rooms are period correct, small but comfortable and clean. Good dining, shops and browsing nearby. Hotel Paisano was a great experience. As you walk in you see the mosaics on the walls, old saltio tile on the floor and many pictures of James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor from a movie shot decades ago. It almost feels kind of like a giant bed and breakfast. You pick up an "old fashioned" key at the front desk when you check in (I can't remember the last time I used a real key at a hotel). The doors are similar to old bedroom doors, with little sound proofing. I can't remember if there was a TV or not, but you don't need it with a fireplace on the patio, says the pyromaniac. There is a restaurant and bar with a great patio with a fountain and wonderful chimneys. It was a little challenging to get more wood from the staff, but again this is coming from a semi-pyro. All and all this was a wonderful night stay. Very romantic and relaxing. read more

This place is a West Texas GEM. In fact, here's how I feel about it: "When I die, I hope I go to the hotel paisano..." Ok, that might be a bit of a stretch, but let's just say I wouldn't be disappointed if that actually happened. The hotel is a small, historic boutique hotel. It offers 41 rooms and suites and an onsite gourmet restaurant and bar - Jett's Grille. I will review the bar/restaurant in a separate review. The rooms are clean and lovely- decorated with period pieces that give a swanky feel. If you can swing it, opt for one of the first floor rooms that comes with a private patio. You will not be disappointed. Each patio has their own little chiminea. Perfect for chilly nights and a glass of wine or bourbon... The staff at Hotel Paisano are inviting, helpful and happy to be there. That's a huge plus when you stay at a hotel. An inviting presence at the check-in desk definitely sets the tone for your stay. Everyone I encountered there seemed to love their job and were happy to help in anyway. There's a lot of history at this hotel too. Check out their tribute/memorabilia room to the move "Giant". All I can say, as well as my wife....is WOW! Extremely charming hotel with the character of an old property and very, very nice amenities. Thick plush towels, tiled, but cozy bathroom has a unique feel. We so wanted to try out the pool, but time did not allow. Loved the architecture which is Mission, by my limited definition, but oh so charming. I expect to visit again....our first was way too short!!!! If you're in Marfa, you should stay here. read more

Quiet, out of the way, and a beautiful building, this hotel is right across from the courthouse and within walking distance of the bookstore, galleries, and an awesome bar. There's also a bar adjacent to the hotel patio. The room was a bit rustic, but the balcony patio more than made up for it. A bit pricey for what it is, but I'd definitely stay there again. read more

All the rooms are great, but the best ones are the ones with private outdoor fireplaces for the cold mountain nights. Wonderful, cute, and historic hotel. We stayed in one of the rooms with a wood burning fireplace on the private patio. It was so nice and relaxing. We got drinks from the bar and brought them up to our room, and drank them in front of the fire. The desk has fire logs to give you if you ask. The staff was super friendly. The food was amazing. They had free coffee in the morning in the lobby. The only thing I can say as a critique of the hotel is that the room is small and there isn't a lot of outlets. But it was built in 1930, so I expected it would be as such. Overall we had a wonderful stay and I would recommend it to anyone. read more

Beautiful hotel with a rich and interesting history. We stayed here after the Thunderbird screwed us over by losing our reservation and going home early. One note: The patio room we stayed in had a nice patio with a fireplace and firelog, but no way to light it. We had no matches, no lighter, and most of Marfa closes around 9pm. I even searched through the hotel lobby and lounge cabinets; found lots of candles, but no fire. We didn't get to enjoy the fireplace, but the rest of the stay was quite pleasant. read more

Maybe I'm being a little harsh with the star rating... but my wife and I recently stayed in room 229, and didn't get nearly adequate sleep. Whether it was the next-door room shower, cleaning crew having somewhat profanity-laden conversation, or guests walking past our door -- we heard it all. With crystal clarity. Loud. The staff was very cordial. The restaurant serves great margaritas and, I hear, food. The lobby is quite lovely: all plusses. But.. sleep is also an important part of the hotel experience, in my opinion. If you prize it, avoid room 229. read more

WARNING: When you book a reservation, ask if the elevator is working. If not, be prepared to drag your luggage up one or two levels. That being said, Hotel Paisano is a delightful, old hotel that has been modernized as best as it can. Bed is excellent, same with towels. Bathroom tiny, as was the custom back then. No place to place items. No noise from other rooms. Did not hear the trains. No phone in room. Bar downstairs is great meeting place. Didn't eat in the restaurant for dinner. Breakfast is only burritos ( $5). Meh. read more

Stayed at Hotel Paisano for late summer Texas adventure with my daughter and loved every bit of Paisano's old Texas charm and can't recommend it highly enough. The beds were comfy and room quiet except for the effocative train whistle at night (which I loved). The layouts of the room are little changed from first built ( i.e. small bathrooms) but again I found it charming. My daughter and I had the well appointed gym, groto inspired pool ( water could be little warmer) to ourselves. Loved the complimentary apples and lemonade in lobby. And OMG, the portabella mushroom burger at restaurant was seriously the best burger I've had. I ordered it both nights I was there. The dry goods stores in lobby had great variety and nice tip of their hat to Marfa's ranching, film and current art scene history. So in nutshell if you need to escape the man bun scene of Marfa no need to drive out of town just trot yourself over to Paisano's. read more

The hotel appearance overall was beautiful of course. I recommend just hopping in to view and visit the gift shops. The rooms are very overpriced for what you actually get but they are cute. The swimming pool area is smaller but adds charm I think to the overall experience. The poor part of this review was the staff. They were absolutely AWFUL. My friend had her wedding here and the staff was nothing short of rude, disrespectful, threatening and overall extremely unwelcoming. I was to be honest very embarrassed for the hotel and how their employees were treating the guests. I DO NOT recommend hosting any kind of events here at all. read more

In a room I borrowed from James Dean There is just something wonderful about a historic hotel. One that has seen the better part of a century and is still around to tell about it. The Paisano is one of the original "Gateway of the West" hotels built by Henry Trost. The beautiful Mission Revival design is enchanting, time stops and rewinds to a more glamorous era. I could get lost doing a photo shoot here. There are so many wonderful points of interest throughout the whole complex. The patio is especially great for enjoying the fine weather or taking a peek at the starts at night. You aren't going to find the latest in hotel luxury here, the doors still take real keys, and some of the doors stick a bit. There is no elevator, but there are only two floors so hopefully you will be fine. Most of the rooms were originally a tiny 10' X 9' when the hotel first opened. The doubles are are now twice larger now due to the shared wall being taken out. That means you will also get twice the number of closets and bathrooms. Trust me, you will need them as they are pretty small, maybe 6' X 6' for the bathroom and 3' X 3' for the closets. Many of the original fixtures will also still be there albeit with some upgrades. My room had only one shower with hot water, the other was all cold. I had a view of the courthouse but the windows have screens on the exterior and the telephone poles and wires obstructed it a bit. I guess it's the price to pay for a century of service, a few creaks here and there to give it character. All in all, the Paisano is probably the best choice in lodging, due to it's proximity to all the cultural attractions of Marfa; as well as it's bars and restaurants. Make sure to book early (more than a month is probably best), they are always busy on weekends and they aren't on any "hotel booking sites". You will have to call them direct. The room prices vary by size and location. They are proud of Paisano's connection to the movie Giant. Many of it's cast stayed at the Paisano and some of their rooms are still maintained as suites baring it's famous occupants name. Of them, the James Dean's would probably be my choice. I'm not sure why everyone isn't giving this five stars, unless they are the kind of people that love Hiltons because "they know just what they're getting." This hotel is beautiful and has old texas/western charm. It reminds me of when fancy people travelled in stagecoaches. The history is amazing, the hotel is beautiful, and the room with the private patios and fireplaces are a fantastic place to relax. The food was good, the people exceedingly friendly. Not only would i recommend this place to a friend, but if I found out a friend passed through Marfa and didn't stay here, I would defriend this person and actively ignore them in social situations forever. This is the coolest little boutique` hotel with John Wayne-type charm, and it was a fantastic stop after a day of hiking in 108 degree weather in Big Bend. read more

I thought it was very classy n cute and the price was reasonable given the competition (or lack there of) and the fact that you get 4 solid walls, a clean room, and an indoor bathroom. If you think I sound crazy, you need to look up El Cosmico and Thunderbird. Those places seem cool too, but not what I needed for this trip. It's a beautiful historic building with a lovely courtyard & fountain that you can hang out at for a relaxing breath of fresh air. On the Friday night that i was there, they had some live music too. Paisano, has a great location. Marfa's not big but this place is walking distance to the main part of town and a good choice of restaurants/places to eat. There are giftshops downstairs with a classy and eclectic mix of items - they seem a little pricey, but the way everything is presented makes it hard to resist buying or wanting everything! The rooms are cute, with nice touches that play on the history of the hotel and Marfa. I recommend this hotel for anyone that is looking to enjoy their time in Marfa with a more tradition hotel room type. read more
