Crazy expensive for a run down, out of date hotel with less than adequate food. Because it's a fisherman's resort, you can't even get in the water because they clean the fish from the dock right in to the water. Our rooms air conditioning unit was leaking the whole time, we had to put towels on the ground below. The food was not good and everything was overpriced. I wouldn't stay here again read more

Don't even know where to start this was my 14th year in a row finishing here and the service was the worst ever are tvs did not work our ceiling fan did not I went and let the front desk know and they said they had no rooms available after 5 minutes all the sudden they did and they wanted to up charge me I said no and they said they would fix everything the next day which never happened the whole trip I let the manager know when we checked out and his exact words were I don't have an answer I asked what do you mean and he said he didn't didn't care I said wow I don't think I will come back and he said I don't care a second time I really hope they figure it out and they wonder why the pool bar is empty now $22 for a cocktail is worse than Newport bch or down town cabo plus you have to deal with rudulpho who is beyond rude read more

Have come here two years in a row with a a group of friends for fishing, relaxation and an overall escape from the never ending pace of Southern California. It's a quick trip from Los Cabos and the hotel will help arrange transport. The property is beautiful and the staff is more than friendly. This place is a hidden gem. Get here! read more

After my daughter's wedding here in the first weekend of May, 2022, six of the family patriarchs stayed here for another week. It could not have been a better vacation venue. All of the accommodations were tip-top. (I guess the previous reviewers paid the price of staying during the maintenance and construction cycles, so that our experience could be perfect!) This resort was started by two European brothers, 25 yrs ago and has added restaurants and rooms over time, making it the premier resort hotel in Los Barriles, catering to sport fishermen, especially during the months of June and July. So May was a quiet month, giving us full reign of the resort in a perfect climate of moderate weather without the stifling heat of August. Our room had twin beds, a walk-in shower, TV we never watched, 110V electric service, steam iron and board, patio with padded chairs, entry way nook with separate sink and bar countertop, refrigerator (that works!), ceiling fans in two rooms, and air conditioning that won't quit! The hot water is almost immediate. My God, I sound like an advertisement ! There's a breakfast hall, snack bar at pool side, sushi restaurant and main resort restaurant, as well as bars with seating in or out of the water. The main restaurant catered our daughter's wedding, and the food was absolutely delicious...especially the chili rellenos, enchiladas and fish entries. There is obviously a trained chef behind the catering. Meals during the week were almost as good, not quite. The Filet Mignon was a little tough, the Bernaise sauce was a little bland, the baked potato and steamed vegetables were "al dente", crisp and perfect - a solid meal at $25 US. It's a private resort with a private beach - no vendors trying to sell us junk! None! What's not 5-Stars about perfect calm in the sun? We are loving it! read more

We came in with eight guys from across the US... This was my first visit and I found it to be delightful, and an excellent value. Bar service, an outdoor facing kitchen, plus the evening meals with a live musician were unexpectedly delightful. Inside the lobby there was a sport fishing office. The gentleman helping us was perfectly fine. For what we paid, this was a bit of a bargain. Other fishing trips elsewhere cost a lot more. I will caution that it makes a difference. What kind of skipper and deckhand you get, if you have a deck hand. The panga fishing boats are all blue and really can handle only two fishermen plus one skipper. But your party are four. Can split up into two boats with a better potential for hitting a big game Marlin or sailfish ... As opposed to four guys in a larger cruiser. Your boat may only hit one big game fish that day? Two boats means you have a better chance of having a guy/ maybe having two guys and two boats hitting two Marlin or sailfish. I definitely want to go again this season. I'm trying to put it together right now. Can't complain a bit, good fun. Right at the end of the pier they set you up to process your catch into steak, fillets, vacuum packed and frozen for a very modest fee. If you don't bring a cooler on wheels ... They will sell you an insulated rectangular box for I think 10 bucks. I recommend this place with little reservation or concerns. So why didn't I give this five stars? Well, for starters, it's not a Ritz-Carlton, it's not a four seasons property which typically are in contention for four stars. Some people might call this a solid or possible three stars depending upon how critical they are? There are certainly elements of this which make it three stars, but I added another star for solid value, super courteous folks, a memorable and successful fishing trip for the 8 fisherman in our party, and I repeat, this was such a great value! You can spend a lot more money for a kind of similar fishing experience... So this goes down as a raging bargain for what we call "gentlemen's fishing"... Again, with the hazard of getting this place overrun with more and more fishermen, and a hazard of pushing prices higher... I can't penalize them by keeping this a secret. I'm going back... I've stayed at this resort with a group of friends (8 couples) many times over the years. I would rate this hotel just "OK" but not worth what they charge now. This area of Baja is not the same semi inexpensive vacation you used to get. It's the new Cabo with the same problems. With that being said, I am writing this review for the staff representatives they had working at the International Sports Expo in Sacramento, California . The three old guys (I'm not calling them gentleman) that sat in the Van Wormer resort's booth were about exciting as a funeral and as friendly as a pack badgers. They were rude, disrespectful grumpy old men. Why the heck would you want them representing your business ? I believe these are the same three clowns that have sat (not worked) in the booth the past few years and have acted the same way each time I've tried to engage with them about a possible future trip. They don't care. If this resort wants new visitors, and old customers to return they need to change the face and attitudes of their representatives. These three non-personality employees are turning away possible guests to this resort, because of their attitude and rudeness. Hotel Palmas de Cortez & Van Wormer management staff need to be aware of how they're being represented. The group of friends that I travel together with will not be booking any more vacations at this hotel. Adios read more

I've been to this resort since the mid 1990's. It's located in a beautiful part of the world. I'm not sure of the health of the fishery. Did not see the diversity of species I remember enjoying for many years. Family stayed 7 nights. Fished 3 days. First 2 days we caught some nice dorado. About 130lbs in total. Day 3 was slow. Which can be expected. What was not expected was the level of unprofessionalism. I speak Spanish and understand it very well. Yet I tend to speak English first. Every female working at the resort was very pleasant, at least to my face. Also very accommodating to any request we may have had. No special requests. But, almost all interactions with the males working at the resort was unprofessional and most of the time it was a bait and switch. Or the most unprofessional "65% discount at X amount" then you speak fluent Spanish and they turn and walk away and you get the real cost at generally half the quoted discount. Bed was comfortable. Condo is big enough. Housekeeping very good and pleasant. Front desk was very good and pleasant. We spent in total $14,000 usd. $2,200 for a side by side. $7,776 for hotel and fishing boats. Food on resort $1,400. Food off resort $600. Tips in total $1,900. Basic groceries $180. It's never about the money, it's about the experience and service received. We will never be back. read more

Spent 5 nights here and enjoyed very much. Housecleaning was excellent. Only reason for 4 stars is because we booked 2 days of fishing.1st day was outstanding action.2nd day on different boat Mahi Mahi we were given 8 hr boat ride. Not 1 single bite and the Capt nor mate knew how to rig balleyhoos we paid for.Fish are too plentiful there to not get 1 bite. Main Pool out of service. Really! Multiple bars closed. Several walking hazards (broken pool clean outs) Room smelled of sewer(maintenance never showed up when asked) Newly renovated room tub would not hold water & was also the sewer smell. Tv was fuzzy and never received a decent channel. Remotes did not match tv's and needed to be swapped out. A Cockroach met its last days in one of the bedrooms. We fought pea size gnats the entire stay. Extremely windy. Don't come during winter. Breakfast buffet was terrible, but when not a buffet it was decent. Lunch and dinner 5 stars, timing of food was 2 stars. Took forever. Prices were rock bottom so it made up for it. Overall we liked most food we ate here. Construction was loud and messy, right outside our door. And the crew even got sawdust all over my wife & father in law at the small pool. Oops! Christmas decorations still up. I know who cares. Snack bar opened and closed at inconsistent hours. One day never even showed up. Spa was a light green color and had what appeared undissolved white chemical. Ehh Spa salons service was extremely affordable & quiet & clean. Oh yeah they do not provide conditioner in the shower. Room 14 (2) bedroom ground floor. read more

Been back three times for #fishandchipstournament Known for their beautiful water, epic sunrises and sunsets, and fishing. If you love those 3 things then this place is for you. About an hour away from Cabo San Lucas, this place has a more resort-y calm vibe to it. The cute friendly stray dogs make it even better! They have different types of rooms you can rent out, they definitely need to change their sheets out once in awhile I feel those bed sheets and couches have been there since they opened. There's lots of different types of rooms, pool front two bedroom, beach front, and penthouses. They have two restaurant at the resort, Titos tacos- I've only been there for breakfast before we go out to fish for the day. It's good, simple eggs, bacon, chilaquiles, fruit, and pancakes. Best of all coffee! lol you can't find coffee anywhere. Beachfront restaurant (not name)- it's good but nothing really stands out to me, guac is good but then again guac is always good. I'd prefer to just take the atv and cruise outside of the resort to try different spots out, this area usually has same things : ceviche, fried snapper, Chile rellenos, and so on. First timer at this resort. We went with a group of 15 people from our club. The area, Los Barriles, is what Cabo probably looked like 30 years ago A sleepy fishing village. Probably a 45 minute ride from the airport......if you don't get stuck behind a slow truck or come upon an accident. The resort itself is clean and well maintained and the staff is friendly. It is an older facility and not overly fancy......don't think Marriott. It's not. But the rooms are very clean albeit a bit dated in furniture, bedding, etc. The beds were comfy enough. The shower had plenty of hot water even though the stream coming out of the head was less than robust. It was brutally hot and humid the first week of October so thank goodness the AC was plentiful in the rooms. We had it going 24/7. Nice and cool. Great swim up bar. There are 3 restaurants onsite so you really never have to leave the resort. You can walk to town if you wish. We did stop at the local market upon coming into town to pick up water and snacks for the room. The resort does restock 3-4 water bottles every day in the in-room refrigerator which is a welcome perk. read more

Celebrated a friend's bday here and had my purse stolen from the bar/pool area. The front staff did not seem interested in helping perhaps because I was not a registered guest or maybe because I'm Mexican. Perhaps if I had been a gringa like 90% of the people there for the fishing contest they would have cared. Phone, prescription glasses and other items will add up to over 1000 in replacement costs. The thief or thieves then charged $1500 . Ruined a lovely day. read more

Fished with Juan & Remy today on La Migra fishing boat. Best Captain & Co-Captain to be out with! We had an incredible time, caught 1 Swordfish, 3 Marlin, 2 Dorado on a half day fishing trip from Hotel Palmas de Cortez. Specifically, the old bartender who has been there for years is just constantly annoyed. Love the location. Love the people. It's a shame that this property is way showing it's wear. Rust. Weeds. Irregular concrete. Stained black out shades. Exposed re-bar. Stained cushions at the pool. Leaky bathroom sinks. Tired looking restaurant with chipped tables. I can go on and on. The plus... a lot of these problems are very easy fixes if the hotel management would just be aware of what the problems are. Please wake up. We have been coming here for almost 20 years and it is so disappointing to watch the hotel go in this direction. We absolutely love the people who have worked here for so many years, love the town and the location. Would've totally given 5 stars if it wasn't for the spa. Sign says they're open Monday-Sunday from 2pm-9pm. You have to write your name down in an appointment book. I did that at 9:15am for a 3:15pm same day appointment. Went back for my appointment, no one was there. Very nice lady at the front desk even said they are awful. I finally found the lady who runs the spa at the pool giving free 5 minute neck and head massages. Apparently she is the only one today...wtf? How am I supposed to know that unless she calls me. In any case, I will not let this negative experience keep me from returning to this place...the people really are great, service at the Bay View bar and grill is outstanding and you can't beat the scenery...just don't use their spa... read more

This hotel is getting pretty run down. The customer service is pretty non existent. The tennis court is so old that there are holes in the court. The pool showered need an update and should have separate showers for men and women. Not very clean and need better lighting. No towels or pool side service. This is a very over priced hotel. read more

I would give this place five stars except for one reason. Really! Put some solar heating in the pools. They are like ice. The ladies at the taco, pizza place are amazing, The staff is amazing, The restaurants are great & everything else has been perfect, but the pools are just way too cold. I really want to sit at the swim up bar and have Hector serve me drinks but it is way too cold in the pool! read more

Our recent stay at Palmas de Cortez Hotel was extremely disappointing - compounded by a rude and incompetent deck hand who ruined our fishing vacation. We chartered one of the hotel's bigger, nicer boats, the Tu Corazon, but unfortunately it came with a scowling, non-communicative, lazy deck hand who had a big chip on his shoulder. Almost half of the fish we had on the line were lost at the back of the boat because Francisco didn't do his job. And at times he appeared to be doing it intentionally; in one instance, he actually laughed at me when I lost a fish that went under the boat while he stood to the side rather than grab the line to direct the fish away from the boat and gaffe it. It was shocking the way he acted. Palmas de Cortez has long gotten away with shoddy hospitality standards (the lowest quality breakfast buffet, mediocre restaurant and basic but over-priced box rooms with not even Wi-fi) because the location on the Sea of Cortez is beautiful and the fishing was excellent. Today, however, the one-time abundance of fish is a thing of the past, with many fishermen we spoke with complaining of smaller fish and meager catches. With a nasty deck hand like Francisco to boot, we will never be returning to Palmas de Cortez. read more
