I met a group for lunch at the restaurant at the hotel and I had the honey sriracha cauliflower appetizer and while it was very good (think it was a whole head of cauliflower!) I wish there were more vegetarian options. Our server was excellent (sorry did not catch her name). But where this place shines is the historic atmosphere of the hotel. I did not stay there but after lunch, Wyatt gave our group a tour of about half dozen unoccupied rooms along with some history of the hotel. There are 40 rooms, each with a different theme reflecting an aspect of Iowa's history. There were originally 77 rooms with only 23 of them with indoor plumbing! The rooms are well-appointed and reasonably priced at an average of $200. I had no idea this gem existed so close to home! read more

Enjoyed a night out in our small town for dinner and the beautiful Hotel Pattee. The lobby was beautifully decorated for Christmas with a poinsettia tree in the lobby and an enormous Christmas tree with a Samara and sleigh and a reindeer near their wood burning fire place. We had the Brie appetizer and filet for dinner. Everything was cooked to perfection. The flavor was delicious. Juicy steak. Broccoli wasn't too soft or hard. This was our second stay at Hotel Pattee, this time in the American Indian room. The room was clean and very quiet. We loved the huge bathroom with nice separate shower and jetted tub, large 2 sink vanity with magnifying makeup mirror. Just FYI, TV's in the rooms are very small and there isn't a clock. It's convenient in winter especially to have dinner in the hotel. Service there was quick. All the staff were very friendly. We will be back and recommend experiencing this grand hotel. read more

This hotel and restaurant was such a pleasant surprise. We were given a gift certificate as a thank you from a special work assignment and from the website didn't expect anything as lovely as this. We stayed in the Gustave Stickley room which we enjoyed the look and feel of. I would say that their in-room TV wasn't much larger than my laptop but we didn't go there to watch TV. The bed was comfortable and there were nice leather/wood chairs that we enjoyed. The best part was the bowling alley! We had an hour of private bowling and it was a blast! read more

He loves getting scritches behind the ears! We wandered a little in the main lobby and checked out the library while we waited for our table for lunch. Gorgeous decor in the hotel. This maybe a long review- I feel worth your time, so please read. Let me start by saying we are from CA and came to this charming town because we were buying an RV, we found this hotel through Yelp, and what a find! From the moment we walked in after a horrible 13 flight day, we were greeted at the desk by Faith, with a warm: 'Laura?' I couldn't believe she had taken the time to know my name. We were shown our room. We explained that there was trouble in the arrival of our RV, that we had not found out about until we were in the air. That we would be needing to stay longer. She immediately put my very troubled mind at ease. 'Don't worry Laura, we will take care of you' What incredible hospitality. I almost cried. The room was lovely. Bed comfortable. We travel with my 65 lb service dog. She was treated as a princess while here. My husband enjoyed an evening of bowling. The staff chatted with us, even when they were busy, they saw a need for me to talk, so they listened. We came for an RV, due to errors on the dealerships side. We were making arrangements to fly home. We actually had already started to schedule our flight. Hotel Pattee kept us from literally losing our minds, during our biggest purchase in our lives. There aren't enough wonderful things to say about this place. A beautiful boutique hotel with individually themed rooms, this 40 room hotel has a lot of great features! A rooftop sculpture garden, a beautiful courtyard area for enjoying coffee or listening to live music or just simply enjoying some quiet time. The dining room is a highlight in the community. The chef creates many great dishes. I highly recommend her homemade chicken salad. Sunday brunch is fantastic, too! Staff is courteous throughout the building and knowledgeable about their community. Highly recommend for a day visit or overnight day. Could be a great wedding venue and a great banquet space if you are looking for such. The rooms are beautifully appointed and they can do attitude of the staff makes everyone feel welcomed and special. The fireplace in the main lobby is a great place to enjoy conversation or read a good book. The library is beautifully appointed with the fireplace and furniture that makes you feel more like staying and never going home, lol. We went here to attend a funeral, and I booked online from their webpage. When we arrived they did not have our reservation ready or any knowledge of us staying. Once we gave the reservation # we did get our room. The lady attending the front desk did her best even though she was not trained for the desk since she was normally worked in the restaurant attached to the hotel. heck the restaurant was really good, food was yummy. I will say that I would easily give 5 stars here just for the awesome bed we slept in, something i would really want in our home. And they have a Pirate Dog in the lobby that greets everyone and is the sweetest thing in the world. I would hang out with him all day if I could. There was a few other things day to day that raised flags, but I would still give it a 5 star rating just for the comfort of the room. The bed was awesome and I slept very good each night. When my wife checked out, they charge her credit card for the week. and our room was under someone else name that was there for the same reason as us and already check out. We went back in and I had an issue because my credit card was already charge when I booked the room online and for a different amount. The same lady that check us in was there again and was trying to help the best she could, and she tried getting the manager involved multiple times, but she was too busy laughing and joking in the other room who we over heard that we could wait. after waiting on the manager that couldn't be bother helping resolve the double charge for almost an hour, we left and decided we would resolve another way. We told the lady at the front desk to have the manager asap because we need this resolve, of course she never did and would not talk when we called. So we provided everything to the bank deal with it. Come to find out from multiple sources, the hotel has been sold a number of times and will be again to the town of Perry. My advise for the town of Perry, You really need to look about replacing staff can do the job and care about the town of Perry. Mistakes happen, I get that, I would still give 5 stars if the manager would of stopped being a social butterfly and resolved our double charge, but apparently not. and because of this, I cannot recommend this hotel to anyone again. read more

I had high expectations of my trip to the Hotel Pattee... and they were almost all met. After an initial room change incident, which I won't go into detail about, we had a fantastic time exploring the building, having a couple drinks at the bar, bowling in the basement and finishing up with dinner at the hotel restaurant, Dave's Milwaukee Diner. Never before have I spent a whole evening in a hotel when I've been traveling... but the purpose of the trip was also to experience the hotel and I'd say we did just that. The bowling was awesome, but the lights in our lane weren't working, so we unfortunately had to aim at unlit pins. Also, there had been a tub overflow situation, so the carpeting around the shoe storage area was sopping wet. Still, we managed to have a great time bowling three free games in the hotel's two-lane alley. Dining in the restaurant (dinner and breakfast the following day) was okay, but I think next time I'll venture out to try Perry's other offerings since it didn't have the 'wow' factor I'm constantly searching for. Additionally, the WIFI service didn't seem comptable with my iPhone. I had to keep searching and reconnecting (which I did often, since I had no service inside the hotel). But even now, I'm planning another trip back to Hotel Pattee, it's one of those special hidden places that you just can't wait to share with people. read more

This is another unusual review of mine, because I haven't stayed here - yet. Imagine my amazement to be traveling through Central Iowa, and stumble into a reasonably priced, 4-Diamond hotel in a small city that is well off the beaten path? You'll be amazed, too! The Hotel Pattee dominates the main drag of Perry, Iowa. Willis Street, named for one of the founders of Perry, is where you'll find this gem. It takes up half the block and your first clue that this is someplace special is the row of flagpoles that adorn the cornice, flying the flags of many nations. (The flags represent themed rooms that celebrate the ethnic heritage of the folks who make up Iowa.) The next eye catching detail is the leaded glass canopy that covers an impressive main entrance. A huge tile emblazoned with the letters "HP" welcome you to the hotel. The Hotel Pattee was modeled after the LaSalle Hotel in Chicago but it has its own personality and charm. The Hotel Pattee opened in 1913 with 40 luxurious rooms. In its salad days, Perry was a major stop on the old Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad, better known as The Milwaukee Road. The city took a blow when passenger service was discontinued, but an even bigger hit occurred when the Milwaukee Road went broke in the early 1970s. The town rallied and raised the funds to build a meat packing plant, which attracted a new wave of workers. The population of Perry is now about 30% Hispanic heritage. The old rail lines have been converted to recreational trails. Perry, and the Hotel Pattee, are uniquely situated on the Raccoon Valley Trail and near to more trails. The Hotel Pattee caters to bicyclists with a repair station and tire pump in front. Indoor secure storage is available for overnight guests with bikes. The Hotel Pattee was named for another Perry founder, David Jackson Pattee, and it was built by his sons, Harry and William. The hotel is extensively paneled and features marble floors and staircase, Persian carpets, Terra Cotta tile floors, metallic accents and the lobby is dominated by a gorgeous mahogany desk that goes with the mahogany paneling throughout the lobby. In one seating area, an enormous hammered copper mantle sets the mood for the room. Furnishings are Arts and Crafts in design, and one room is even named for Gustav Stickley. Although his name is nowhere to be found, the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright calls out from the lobby decor. Each of the forty rooms is named and the decor, different in each room, is usually tied to the name. There are two "junior" suites, four full suites and four rooms are set up for handicap access. Themes mostly revolve around Iowa history or ethnic groups with names like Irish, Welch, Italian, Bohemian, Japanese, Chinese, American Indian and Amana Colonies. One room is named for Louis Armstrong, one of the Hotel Pattee's most famous guests. Another room is named for Perry native, V.T. "Snick" Hamlin, the creator of Alley Oop. The charming decor of each room adds to the atmosphere. The hotel also offers a spa, exercise room, and a two-lane bowling alley in the basement. Sadly, I was unable to stay for the night in Perry on this trip but I am looking forward to the day when travel brings me back to Central Iowa, so I can pick a room and stay in this gem of luxury in the heart of Iowa. read more

I would highly recommend anyone in the area to stay at Hotel Pattee if they have the chance. Not only is it a beautiful, unique hotel, but the customer service was amazing. Prior to our stay at Hotel Pattee, I had to switch my reservation from Friday night to Saturday. My exchange with the staff (especially Sarah, the Front Desk Manager) was excellent. She easily changed my reservation, quickly provided a new confirmation number and also accepted my request to have the Dutch themed room and a late check-out. Throughout the month leading up to our stay I reached back out to the staff with a few questions about amenities, etc. and each time I was always blow away by how nice and helpful the staff's responses were. When it came time to finally stay at Hotel Pattee everything was perfect. Both our restaurant and hotel reservation were exactly as expected, they honored our late checkout time and housekeeping even let us tour a few other rooms on our way out. I cannot say enough good things about this place! We will be back! read more

This was a beautiful hotel with very kind staff. Their restaurant was outstanding, and the hotel has great amenities like a whirlpool, a bowling alley!, a gym, and a beautiful shaded courtyard/alleyway just outside. The rooms all have different themes. We stayed in the "Alton School Room," which was very cute. Perry, IA, is a very quiet, small town, and the hotel is a nice oasis. One downside - they don't have any computers, so if you want to be connected to the outside world, bring your own. Also, cell phone service wasn't great inside the hotel, at least on the Sprint network. Another random thought: Perry, Iowa, probably isn't a good place to visit if you're a vegetarian. What an incredible treasure in the middle of small town Iowa. Friends suggested the Hotel Pattee as a meeting place halfway between us and I am so glad they did. From the incredibly beautiful front doors, the wonderful library, the relaxing courtyard and beyond, no details have been left to chance. The guest rooms are all incredibly unique. We stayed in the Southeast Asia room and noted how luxurious, yet understated the accomodations were. It wasn't over the top and cheesy. Our room was comfortable, up to-date and a wonderful retreat. The live music in the lobby on Friday night was fun and was a nice touch after dinner. Probably most notable to us was the presence of the owner. He spoke to each guest he encountered and was concerned about comforable and happiness of all. His hardwork will pay off because I plan to tell everyone I know how wonderful the Hotel Pattee is. We plan to return again in November (and maybe before then). Don't hesitate to visit the Hotel Pattee. You will be enchanted! read more

I've always wanted to stay here. I love the idea of the themed rooms! My husband and I stayed here for our fifth anniversary. We planned on doing the entire Raccoon River Valley Trail loop the next day and chose Perry as our anchor spot. Since we had the bike trip planned, we stayed in the RAGBRAI room. Perry is far from Des Moines, so you better have a romantic night just the two of you planned or else you'll be wandering the streets of Perry. We enjoyed two meals in the restaurant in the lobby and everything was good there. The front desk lady and service was phenomenal. Really. Wish I could have that at every hotel. Oh, and there were cookies laid out in the hallway for anyone to eat! I hope this beautiful hotel continues to thrive. We will return to try another room again. read more

The king size bed was very comfortable. Pillows were not as firm as I like them and the room temperature was a little warm. I would definitely recommend this hotel if you are ever in Perry, Iowa!! I just got back from the Hotel Pattee; my family and I went to this art nouveau hotel on a two-day getaway. Architecture and interior design buffs would love this place; the attention to detail everywhere is amazing. The materials used are of extremely high quality -- in this respect I haven't seen a nicer hotel. Each room has an individual theme, and most themes are culturally oriented. I recommend staying in the Japanese room. We couldn't as we needed connecting rooms, but in the book about HP available in each room, it looked like the most impressive. I would recommend HP for a nice (romantic) weekend getaway, or if traveling through Iowa with some leisure time, as you really want to enjoy the hotel. Example: both days we were there we were the only ones using the hot tub/sauna/steam room. I loved it. The hotel library has plenty of books and movies if you want to stay in the hotel the whole time you're in Perry, which is what my family and I did (except for venturing out to eat). Also, Nick the evening front desk man is endearlingly over-attentive to your needs. My one complaint, and it's minor, is that there were some sayings from the Bible on the walls in the lobby. I guess the people who renovated this hotel last were pretty religious. It didn't bother me that much, but if you're say a practicing atheist this might not be the hotel for you. Been here a couple of times now, and enjoy it, particularly the little bowling alley in the basement, and the in-house restaurant "Dave's Milwaukee Diner". I also like that they offer free wireless, unlike most other pricey hotels. However, it isn't perfect: it's the kind that makes you go to a web page and click a meaningless button before it'll work. It was also fairly flaky -- it worked fine in our room, but not in the room directly above us. read more

I was very impressed with this unique, historical hotel seemingly in the middle of nowhere! Each room has a different theme, and we stayed in the Italian Room which featured a wonderful window seat and amazing woodwork. The bathroom was also very spacious and the hotel uses Crabtree & Evelyn bath products. The hotel is dog friendly with only a $20 fee. A bowling alley and hot tub/sauna/steam room are all located in the basement. I appreciate the friendliness of the staff and everything was very clean. The hotel has a bar, restaurant, bowling alley and spa. The town doesn't seem to have a lot going on. Gorgeous, unique, and elegant hotel. We stayed in the Barry Kemp room and enjoyed all the interesting memorabilia. Clean, comfortable room, but especially loved the shower and jet tub. Dave's Milwaukee Diner was really incredible and we loved having a bowling alley all to ourselves. Can't wait to come back and check out other rooms. We will definitely be back soon. We had an outstanding dinner at The Hotel Pattee. My blackened end-cut prime rib was terrific. My wife's filet was perfectly done. The drinks were nourishing, and the service was very good. Although it is a 20 minute ride from West Des Moines, it is well worth the trip. I would definitely recommend this restaurant, and we plan to go there more often. read more

We stayed here years ago for an anniversary treat. We stayed in the circus themed room which was pretty cute. We opted for a game of bowling before we walked around town. We ended up at a local bar and ended the night there. It was too cold to really enjoy a walk but it looked like they had a nice outdoor seating area when the weather is more cooperative. A nice old place. Worth a stay here. More of a boutique type of hotel stay. Staff were friendly. We enjoyed our time here and we would return for a special occasion. read more
