I communicated with Jo by e-mail before I left the US and she was very kind and my apprehension. She set up my classes ahead of time. When I arrived, I had yoga the first day. Joanne led the class. She had a bag ready for me with materials I needed and led us through the Vinyasa class - barely intimidating at all. She explained as we went and I felt wonderful afterwards. The next day we started with meditation at 6:45 am on the roof. It was peaceful, quiet, contemplative and wonderful. Later another yoga class and then I was off to the rest of my day. I know many of her classes and instructors are more challenging, but for a beginner like me, this was a great place to try it out. Thank you for a wonderful experience!

We ordered coffee all 3 days we went there. Each day, it was made a little differently, each time delicious and made with love. There is no standardization here. This is not starbucks. I was there end of January and had a fantastic time! I've done Spanish immersion schools in Chile,…read moreCartagena, Costa Rica, Cuba and now Tulum, MX and have loved every one! The teachers are AMAZING. Every one of them. Usually classes run from 9am- noon with a break in between each session. 1st 90min or so is grammar and second session is conversation. During one of our conversation classes, our teacher took us to a restaurant to practice ordering and learning menu items and utensils. If you arrive at 8am, yoga classes are included in your tuition! Afternoons are free to explore or go to the beach, but the school usually hosts an early evening activity to promote a sense of community and learn about the culture. Monday was a Mexican art class, Tuesday we played Lotteria, similar to bingo/matching and practiced our vocabulary with the images. Wednesday evening there was an optional (separate cost) activity of going to Muyil for a flotilla in the canals of the Muyil laguna, and a visit to the (small) ruins. It was an amazing side trip! Then we returned to the school for a salsa lesson which was really fun, despite my two left feet! Thursday was a cooking class on how to make mole. Friday was our last day of school and we had a mini graduation ceremony and a taco party! Saturday was another optional all day trip to Bacarat to see the lagoon of 7 colors, but it was POURING rain most of the time. But we were with such a fun group, we made the most of it, and found the silver lining to every cloud! I have such fond moments of everyone there and made some amazing new friends! Without making any paper waste, my Spanish was quadrupled in just 3 weeks. The classes are small, outrageously fun and conversational. I took advantage of the free yoga every morning, the evening culture classes, the weekend optional excursions and most importantly the host family living arrangements. It was, hands down, the most valuable part of the experience. The host family lived near and gave me a bicycle for the duration of my stay. The hosts were warm, welcoming, accommodating and made Mexican food from scratch every single day. My vocabulary blossomed during these family meals, where the human experience is so universal, you take part in these conversations and next thing you know, you're fluent. Cannot speak highly enough of the Meztli School for putting this all together.

Yoga Shala is located on the jungle side of the beach and is probably the most economical place to…read morestay on the beach. The property is well maintained and the staff is very friendly. Rooms are minimalistic with thin walls (can hear next door conversations and more!). Single room is very small, approximately 5' x 8'. Sheets are not changed, only tended to. Shared bathrooms are clean and ecological soap/shampoo is provided. Water in shower/sink is slightly salty. Yoga instructors are great! Yoga area is open but covered by a mesh curtain / mosquito net (this does not keep mosquitos out). Floors are made of wooden planks that are not perfectly even and have gaps in between. Nonetheless, these flaws go with feel of the property and did not disrupt my yoga practice. In short, you get what you pay for.

I went to do yoga at Yoga Shala five times during my week in Tulum. I chose it based on the $50…read moreweek pass, which is pricey, but still cheaper than any other place I could find. They offer yoga classes twice a day on the weekdays and once on the weekends, and the styles vary a lot. I liked three of the four teachers we went to, but the fourth one was bad enough that we avoided going to her class again, even though it was at the most convenient time for us. There's a lot to not like about yoga shala. The yoga studio itself is set up horribly. The floor is made up of uneven wood planks with large gaps between them, with gaps up to an inch wide. This makes everything awkward and uncomfortable, as you struggle to find a non-gappy area to place your hands and feet. The studio is enclosed in a mosquito net with a large hole in it, so not only do you lack a wall to practice inversions, but you will be eaten alive by mosquitoes. Insect repellent is highly recommended. It gets really hot under the net, and some of the teachers choose not to run the fans, so that was very uncomfortable at times. Overall, it was not a great experience, but I did go back five times, so it was clearly not the worst thing in the world. If I had to do it over again, I would have chosen a studio with a solid floor.
