We stayed four days here back in the 90's ......it was wonderful .... Did it have the amenities of a modern fancy overpriced hotel ... well nope .... It had more !!!! It had home cooked stick to to your ribs food at every meal ... it had a plethora of historic memorabilia peppered through out the whole building ... inside and out ... it had nostalgia and at night the string lights that were hung ( which was way before its time like now ) gave off such ambiance that it would make any married couple new or novice want to be in simpler times ...... there was horse shoes outside for friendly competition .... An old historic wagon for perfect picture opportunities ... domino table with antique dominoes that I'm sure if they could talk would tell the stories of all who have visited ...there was a card table with decks of cards ready to be shuffled and spent out to those who knew the game of chance or maybe even some under the table exchanging of pocket change .... The whole experience was one of a kind ... memories were made that will play over and over in my head as long as I am walking on this earth .... ... mostly of my first born son that had the time of his life ( as he is no longer with us ) so blessed I have those memories !! What I am saying is if you have a family reunion or any family get together that you want to spend true quality time with and not spend an arm and a leg on over commercialized entertainment PLEASE consider taking a bite out of some of Texas histories first built hotels ...like the one in a long forgotten small town called Turkey Texas .... What you make of memories in time ..in a place that will stand still even if it is only for a while ....your heart will be full , your family will become closer and the rush of all the chaos in daily life will disappear and you will be so thankful that places like this really do still exist . A cold rainy front changed our plans to camp at Caprock, cut to a serendipitous room open at the Hotel Turkey. My fam of 4 were warm and cozy in one of the so meticulously decorated container units. We strolled the main drag there for so many fun photo ops, before having a great dinner and a show back at HT. It was grimy amazing to have good food (including healthier and kid options) and good music steps away from where we ultimately slept. Checking out Caprock Canyon was an easy ~15min drive the next day. The women who run HT have thought of every detail and are just so welcoming. Loved it, no notes-- next time: date weekend sans kids. read more

I'm originally from West Texas but we moved to the Houston area a while back. I had been begging my husband for a nice & relaxing getaway. I had heard amazing things about Hotel Turkey! There's something beautiful and nostalgic about this place. It's super quiet but at the same time it's so much fun! They have live music, a bar, great food, and the people are the definition of Southern hospitality. Everyone was so welcoming and the staff treat you like family. They literally go out of their way to make you comfortable. The hotel is a historic paradise with fun relics all around. Some things have been updated but for the most part you are getting the old fashioned charm of the original floors, key locked doors, cozy rooms, claw foot tubs, etc. We absolutely loved our stay and can't wait to head back! I highly recommend for anyone looking to go off the grid for a bit and just take in the small town life. read more

I am writing this review and mentally processing our trip to Caprock and stay at Hotel Turkey. We reserved one of the shipping containers for our family of 4 for 3 nights. We were excited to try something different. The hotel, staff and container were above and beyond our expectations. The container was a super fun, unique and cozy experience. The area in the back of the hotel has corn hole, trees for kids to climb and a nice bar. Breakfast each morning was outstanding and the coffee was perfectly hot. The hotel history is very interesting as well. The town is limited to 1 or 2 restaurants which we tried and had good experiences.... Just know they close by 8pm. Overall I would definitely return to stay at Hotel Turkey...the welcoming, laid back friendly atmosphere and character made the trip very memorable. read more

The room was on the 1st floor across from Kitchen. They cleaned until around 2 am then at 4 am the noise again began with loud crashes! Then shows as a bed and breakfast but in actually you pay for your breakfast??? The restaurant was great except you pay to reserve a table? The experience was not good. We were there on April 8th. Hotel Turkey is a step back in time. We stayed 2 nights on a visit to Caprock Canyon and enjoyed cold beers and very good pizza on the hotel's beer garden patio. They have live music and a bigger menu on the weekends. We enjoyed strolling Main Street in the evenings, where the Turkey Creek Winery bar and gift shop should not be missed. This 1920s hotel is old and charming, owner and staff friendly and welcoming. The rooms have nice bedding, good TV and wifi. Bathrooms are functional, but need a little TLC. read more

What a wonderful place to stay if you're visiting Caprock Canyons and don't feel like camping. And they are dog friendly! Rooms are cozy and clean! Staff are very friendly and welcoming. The restaurant that is attached is also great...not really any other place to eat in town, so this is very convenient. They even have live music most nights. Patio is great to sit back and have a drink after a day of hiking. And this is dog friendly too! Breakfast also included in the price. What a wonderful place to stay. We've stayed at fancy hotels across America. This ain't one of those places. Being built in 1927 as a small town hotel shows in so many wonderful ways. It was like being back in the house that I grew up in...except they have indoor plumbing. One of the best aspects staying here was the food. Everything we had was outstanding. Breakfast was fantastic. We didn't read the fine print and didn't know breakfast was included. "If you paid, we'd have to give you a menu and let you choose what to eat." The food was as good as anything we've ever had in the DFW area. Every single staff member we interacted with was what I would consider stereotypical small town Texas kind of folks. We really loved our stay at Hotel Turkey. This is a small hotel in a small town that is at least 1.5 hours from any major city. Life moves slower there and it was just what we needed. This place is doing great things to provide live music and great food in a fairly isolated part of Texas, and rather than the bare minimum, they are doing it very well. This is not the Holiday Inn Express, so don't go in expecting that. Small towns are not open 24 hours a day, so don't expect to snap your fingers and have anything you want. That said, the hotel does a great deal to provide as much as they can to make your stay a great one, including great WiFi and food available at most meal times. A past review said the doors did not lock. This is no longer true. Each room has a deadbolt lock. This is a family friendly establishment with play areas for the kids outside, and the restaurant and bar are a gathering place for the entire community. The atmosphere is great, not pretentious at all, and we hope to come back again soon. read more

My husband and I stayed here commuting from Dallas in hopes to thru-hike the nearby Caprock Canyon Trailway. We arrived past check in time and they were very accommodating with us. Our room was clean and the decor in the hotel is very cute. I'm actually envious of the bathroom we had in our room. The restaurant downstairs made us a great pizza loaded with veggies! Overall staying at the hotel I was impressed! There's a great outdoor patio area, bottles of water for guests, sodas to buy, nearby gas station, wifi, and a coffee station set up for guests in the hallway. Then I became overwhelmingly grateful and impressed when we were told the week prior (not by the hotel, but the park) there was a shuttle service to the trail way and it turned out there wasn't anymore and some of the folks at Hotel Turkey went out of their way to save our vacation! They rallied together and one drove us to the trailhead and another dropped our car off for us at the opposite end! They didn't have to do that, but I am utterly grateful to them and highly recommend staying here because they are all great people who will help you if they can. The Best customer service I have ever received. If I head back in this direction I will stay here again. read more

This is a follow up review. Its been a few years since I have stayed at the Hotel Turkey, used to be called "the Turkey Hotel". Stayed here overnight before visiting the state park. Loved the small town vibe. Staff completely accommodating and super friendly. Stayed in one of their newly finished containers. What a treat! Record player with vinyls to enjoy. Mini fridge and microwave included. Amazing circular shower, super comfortable queen size bed, even pillows were first class! Decor was very fun. For dinner they prepare wings and homemade pizza, one of the best I've ever had! Very reasonable. The customer service alone makes up for the issues I found wrong with our visit. Our issues: toilet stopped working in the middle of the night, had a hard time finding someone working the front counter (didn't even get to checkout the following morning or tell them about our toilet issue), couldn't lock our door when we left our room (but really didn't feel our belongings were open to theft), didn't have anyone mention breakfast when I went to get coffee the following morning and I wasn't sure what to do, regardless of the hotel age, I found the rooms could've been cleaned better than what they were, I didn't have an electric socket to charge my phone (upstairs room) and they used extension cords to plug in things (I stressed over a fire hazard over night and afraid to add my phone charger to the already full cords), and lastly, we only had pizza with salad as an option for dinner (Sunday evening). Which, by the way, the salad was great!! Pizza, not so much... but was edible. This hotel is the oldest hotel (1927), so don't expect a nationwide chain appearance, expect old...very, very old. I didn't mind the issues since the employees/owners made such wonderful accommodations for us and overall great deal! They were very friendly and helpful the day we arrived, but I didn't find the same friendliness the following morning because I couldn't find anyone (I'm sure I would've had the same courtesy experience had someone been there to acknowledge me)!!! I felt awkward leaving like we did.... there was a group of men sitting down in the dining room drinking coffee and eating, but I didn't know if any of them were in charge of the hotel and I didn't know what else to do! So, we loaded up and quickly left so we could find a working restroom. I really feel bad for the owners because they have so much work they need to put into the building and I can honestly tell they are trying. I can't imagine having to do what they are doing. I don't think they realize what they got themselves into... in my opinion.....because there were some things I felt could've been avoided with a little more effort. However, they are by far the nicest, friendliest, and sweetest people I think I've ever met. I just wish it would've been cleaner and more dinner options and working toilet. I wish them well and hope they can finish up the renovations so they will be able to provide an awesome experience to their visitors and share a great piece of history in Turkey, Texas. read more

Stayed here with some friends while we were in town to visit Caprock Canyon state park. The pros: the hotel is charming and quaint, and the beds in the room were clean and comfortable. The staff could NOT have been friendlier or more accommodating...5 stars for hospitality! If I had a complaint it would be that it's a bit noisy in the hallway due to the shared bath, and the bathrooms are not nice. The one in our room had a rusty, non functioning sink. I'd stay there again and plan to on my next visit to the park. Just know...this hotel is comfortable and friendly, not fancy. read more

My wife and I were traveling to Montana this summer, and wanted to see Cap Rock SP and Palo Duro Canyon. On a lark, we decided to stay in Turkey, TX. Hotel Turkey was wonderful! One could not ask for a more charming, quaint hotel. The staff was incredible. The entire family was extremely accommodating and gracious, and treated us like family. Let me start by saying that I have hardly used Yelp, and that I have never left a bad review for anything, ever. The Hotel Turkey was that bad, though. To start, I called to make a reservation because their website booking system didn't work. I needed to call two different people, which seemed kind of disorganized, but I just went with it. The real problems started when we arrived at the hotel. There was no official "check-in process." We just arrived, gave our name (no address, didn't pay or anything else), and were taken up to a room. Surprise! None of the rooms have room keys. We could lock our room from the inside, but not the outside. We didn't feel like we could leave our belongings in our room when we weren't there, because anyone could just come in and take them. You can see on the doors that there used to be locks, but they've been removed. WHY? That set the stage for what was to come. We stayed in a room that had not be remodeled, so perhaps some of the rooms are very nice, but ours was very "historic." I knew it was an old hotel, but I also think that, for $96 a night, there are some very basic things that could have been done to our room to make it much more livable. For instance, our bathroom door wouldn't shut all the way. The bathtub, and the bathroom generally, felt very dirty. There was a clawfoot tub, but no shower, and no one mentioned that on the website or when we were booking a room. In addition, the sheets were either dirty or stained, and there was what seemed to be a dangerous electrical cord set-up near the window-unit air conditioner, where there were multiple extension cords all plugged into each other. That seemed scary enough, but then we also noticed that our room didn't have a smoke alarm, and we actually didn't see a smoke alarm anywhere on the 2nd floor of the hotel! There were two small fire extinguishers, but no smoke alarms anywhere. The wifi didn't work the day we arrived, but did work the next morning. The next morning, we went to the hotel restaurant for breakfast. Luckily, I saw on TripAdvisor that breakfast ended at 9:00 am, because no one from the hotel ever mentioned that breakfast was even included in our stay, let alone when it ended. I entered the restaurant and saw people eating. There was no sign near the door to indicate whether I should seat myself or wait to be seated. No one greeted me. Finally, a man wearing street clothes made eye contact with me, so thinking he was just a hotel guest, I asked "Do I seat myself, or wait to be seated?" Turns out this guy was the WAITER. He had been sitting and eating with his family, but he said I could sit anywhere and then brought me a water and a menu. FYI: If you are a hotel guest, you only have one option for breakfast (potatoes, toast, eggs, and bacon or sausage). The food was fine, I guess, but after the whole weird hotel experience I wasn't impressed. The final fun came when I tried to check out. First, I had to wait at the front desk for approximately 10 minutes for the waitress to come ask me if I was ready to check out. There was no one working at the desk. I thought about just leaving and was unsure if I needed to check out, since I apparently hadn't needed to check in. I waited, though, and now regret it. The waitress asked if I had paid. I didn't know if I had paid, because I gave my credit card number to the lady on the phone who took my reservation, but she said she wouldn't run the card. So the waitress called the lady (presumably the owner), having to use two different cell phones, because they have no phone at the desk. They obviously have no rules in place for how or when to charge people. First, the owner said she would charge me. Then, the waitress asked if I wanted a receipt, which of course I did because they were so unorganized, so then it was as if they didn't know what to do. The waitress ended up running my credit card, and it went through paypal so I was able to email a receipt to myself. The staff was very confused by this and tried to then print me a receipt, which they couldn't figure out how to do. I was getting pretty frustrated by this point, so I said I didn't need a printed receipt and was finally able to leave. I realize this is a small town, and I am from a small town, but our stay was really ridiculous on every level. I have very low expectations for hotel rooms and have stayed in a lot of not-very-nice places, but for the price I felt like this place should have been a lot nicer. $50 would be about the right price to pay for the unremodeled rooms at this hotel. The higher price of $96 led me to believe that this place would be much nicer, but it was in fact one of the very worst hotels I've ever stayed in. Other reviewers make it sound much nicer, and perhaps the remodeled rooms are, but it was still managed in a very unorganized way. I'm sorry to have to leave this bad review! read more
