Beef empanada and a salad I made at home
    Susan H.

I've been checking out Hotpanda's website and Instagram for awhile, and today was the day I finally got my empanada! There are a lot of great choices of empanadas. However, I decided to go for a more traditional one and went with the beef empanada. It was seasoned well, had a good amount of filling and a tasty crispy shell! The size was good for me and I paired it with a salad. So, I definitely enjoyed my lunch today. I also tried the pineapple and ginger drink, it was good and had a kick. A line started as soon as their food truck was open for business at 11am, so definitely a popular place. The service is amazing, the owner is very kind and engages with the customers in line! Even with a line it moved pretty fast, so I didn't wait too long! I live in PA now, but I go back to NJ a lot, so I'll definitely be going back to Hotpanada! Thinking of trying the Cubana empanada next time!

Pro tip: ask for extra red sauce. I'm rounding up only slightly for this city worthy food truck that seems to spend a few days per week in an underused suburban parking lot. Ironically( or fiendishly clever?) it is located within walking distance of my go to empanada brick and mortar. I was able to view the menu through their website and knew I had to try the beef and chicken, I rounded out the order with a Philly cheesesteak( this one comes with a small container of whiz) I liked all of them. The steak was filled with tender beef and just a hint of onion and American cheese, as I ate this I was thinking how good it would be if this steak was filling up a more substantial delivery vehicle so I could get huge bites of it. I liked the other 2 even better as they were more traditional and I used the tasty red sauce plus my own produce. The beef was not spicy but had a pleasant seasoning, the pulled chicken had just a slight spice and both very enjoyable. The dough used appears to be wheat flour( my fav place uses corn) but not too thick. Crusty and flaky but not oily at all. Based on what you order there might be a short wait if it needs to be fried first. The most popular items are precooked, my choices were all ready to go as soon as I made my selection. Customer service was fast and friendly too. In theory I'm a fan of most food trucks. But sometimes the reality doesn't warrant 4 stars. I'm referring to costs mainly. At around $4 per emp, this is a bit more than at my fav place but not at all prohibitive considering the nice size and plump and tasty fillings. It looks like Hamilton Township finally has a dedicated food truck that is up to metro standards. Hope they stick around for awhile or find a suitable building locally.

I had try the Pastelonada and Shrimp . I really liked the pastelonada it was good and tasty . The shrimp was not my favorite , it had to much dill and it was very liquidy and it made the empanada soggy.

I have a hard time believing I'm the first Yelper for this establishment; it is just so good. Hotpanada is a food truck that is parked a few days a week at the old Kmart on Whitehorse in Hamilton, and they've been a staple through the pandemic for us. I picked up a few back in November 2020 that I split with my ex-husband. We tried the traditional beef, the buffalo chicken, along with the regular chicken empanadas, and they were all delicious. They're larger than many empanadas I've had in the past, so two will do you for a quick lunch. The crust is flaky perfection. As mentioned in previous posts, my son is very fussy, but I managed to convince him to try Hotpanada - it was an effort because he was skeptical and just not curious about branching out. But I begged him to try a bit, and he wound up eating two entire empanadas. Since then, we've picked up empanadas from the truck nearly every two weeks, and (I) have branched out and tried the shrimp, the spinach/feta, the samosa, and the pizza varieties (all good), and my son and his dad tried the stinking hot, FLAMEanada, which they agreed was a little to hot to actually enjoy, but if you you love heat, you may like this one. I think the cost is a bit more than the average empanada to discourage everyone except the most committed spice fans. My favorite is definitely the standard beef empanada, though the spinach/feta is a close runner up. This husband and wife duo make their own salsa, and it is fantastic, so be sure to ask for some. My son also likes the churros, which are a perfect blend of flaky/tender, and coated with sugar, and we've enjoyed an assortment of their juice drinks too. Anyway, if you haven't yet, you need to try Hotpanada. A local treasure.

How can something be overpriced, over cooked and cold?? That's what I got after I ordered the cheesesteak empanada.

I highly recommend it. I also tried their beef empanadas. They were excellent. They're fried to order and homemade. There's a lot of filling and the beef inside is perfectly seasoned. The last time I had empanadas this good was at my Puerto Rican friend's house where his grandma made them! A close second was in Rincon, Puerto Rico. These are that good. They're a must try. I'd known about them for years, but they were kind of out of the way for me. The place is small and unassuming, which gave me high expectations, as sometimes I find myself having lower expectations for a more "Mexican" decorated place (I'm wrong as often as I'm right). As far as the Fish Tacos went, they do not serve the Baja style fried fish tacos that I'd grown up on out west, so it was a downer when the plater arrived and I saw the tacos filled with chopped fish cooked in broth. That said, at least the taco was well filled and the fish had a very good flavor. The broth turned out to be a major issue, as the (very tasty) single layer tortillas were soaking up the broth while I ate the first taco, and the second and third tacos both split at the seams and fell apart after one or two bites. A second tortilla may have prevented this debacle, but I won't order fish tacos here again. I'd have loved a fish soup made in this style. The next visit I tried Tacos de Tripa (fried pork intestines), which is my current go to taco style. They were very good, and I enjoyed the heck out of them. They were nice and crispy as I'd requested, and the excellent tasting tortilla made them an excellent choice. My wife had a cheese tamal that had ribbons of poblanos inside as well, and it was also very good with the poblanos providing a nice balance to the heaviness of the cheese. I'd get both again in a heartbeat. My third visit was at lunchtime, and I opted for a Torta de Chili Relleno--essentially a chili relleno sandwich. It wasn't the first I've ever had, and it's a fave torta when I see them on the menu--which isn't often. The torta arrived with a nice sized chili relleno along with the usual smear of beans, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, and a couple pieces of queso fresco served on a lightly toasted roll. Overall, the torta was very good tasting, and it went down nicely. However, I wish they used a little firmer roll instead of the soft one they did use. The torta was big and warm, and a crustier roll would have been better. The soft one used was near to collapsing under the weight of the ingredients. Fries are an option on the many torta options for a couple dollars extra. In retrospect, I'd have liked to have added a layer of fries to the sandwich for a little extra kick. All in all, El Gallo Tropical is a place I'll continue to go to. The staff is very friendly, and the menu is extensive (too big?). Although I had them initially at three stars after my first visit for fish tacos, the second (4+) and third (4-) visits have raised them up, and I'm rounding up to a four.

I was honestly really shocked to walk inside and have it look more like a hole in the wall bar than a restaurant, plus the giant tv screen with security were pretty off-putting. We decided to not be so judgey on the dark decor and instead test out some plates from their extensive menu. Hubby ordered a shrimp arepa and a chicken arepa. He preferred the shrimp arepa, I liked the chicken better. I ordered a Patacon con todo (a large plantain fried and filled like a sandwich with meat, cheese, lettuce, tomato and pink sauce). The sandwich was good, but had way too much sauce. My son had the steak with rice and beans, and the steak was awful. It was chewy, overcooked and full of fat. The beans were also not that great. Overall, I didn't feel like the customer service was great here (our server was fine, but nothing to really note), the place is super dark and gloomy (the music was not even good), combined with the giant security cameras...it's a miss for me.
