At first, I was a little intimidated as I had only read about it in glossy magazines as the new 'place to be seen' in Dublin. Frequented by the likes of top models Rosanna Davison, Amanda Byram and Sarah McGovern (they looked after her hair and make up for her recent wedding), I was a tad petrified they would take one look at me and point their perfectly manicured finger towards the nearest exit. But after doing a little research into the place, I was quite intrigued. After learning it was run by top hairdresser Mark O'Keefe and his make up artist wife Paula, I decided to give it a go. They've been working in the industry for years and years and have loads of big profile clients. If it's good enough for Rosanna and the girls, it's good enough for me I thought to myself! I started going to the salon in South William St first and although it's a little pricey (app €150 for a half head highlights and €45 for a blow dry), it's not hugely more expensive compared to the likes of Toni&Guy. The difference in Brown Sugar is that the service is amazing - the staff are excellent, you can enjoy a glass of wine/champagne/beer and the massage chairs in the wash area are to die for! They also apply make up (€50) and give make up lessons (price on request) and after numerous appointments, I can vouch that the girls do a fantastic job - you leave a shinier, happier, glossier version of yourself! When my fantastic stylist Orla moved to their newly opened Blackrock salon, I followed suit and the new salon is just as glamorous and relaxing. I really cant recommend it enough. So, if like me, getting your hair or make up done is a real treat, then get yourself into Brown Sugar sharpish. This is definitely a case of 'you get what you pay for.' I was a hair model for Vidal Sassoon who personally worked on my hair in the 1980s, and I have not felt this good about my hair since Vidal last touched my head, not until Scruples in Dublin. What happened next was nothing short of a miracle. Elizabeth took up the challenge of fixing the shameful mess that was my hair. She spent over an hour carefully trimming down the weight and bulk, allowing my natural curls to spring back to life. She painstakingly softened the areas in the back where chunks had been removed by the previous stylist, resolving the mushroom shape that had taken over. Elisabeth is a charming professional who brought my lovely red hair back to life. Not only did she correct the bad cut, she gave me one of the best cuts I've ever had. I left the salon with my self confidence restored. I felt pretty again. Finding a hair stylist is not an easy process. I knew the place is a bit upscale, so upon entering I already had expectations of what my service and the final product was going to be like. The staff was great, I actually had a few people working on me as my stylist attended to other customers at certain stages of my colour and cut. Everyone was friendly and hospitable, but it wasn't over the top. About 2.5 hours later, I had a new do, a fresh colour and was very happy with my service and my results. Go to the till to pay with my gift card and the cashier tells me that their credit card machine has not been working all day and that I'd need to pay for the service in cash. She pointed me to a bank machine so I could take out some cash to pay for the service. I was not only upset but frustrated. You check in with reception when you come in and pay at the same counter. You'd think they'd have a sign up saying that it was cash only due to credit card issues or warn you before your service, as I'm sure I'm was not the only one redeeming a gift card. Walked out 255 euro down, that I was not intending to spend, and still have a gift card for 200 euro. Talk about a great service being ruined in 30 seconds.

Not that it was needed as there was plenty of people who were happy to help with whatever I needed down to a phone charger. My stylist really listened to me and I felt like she really understood what I wanted and she delivered that and more and told me what she thought would look best too which I am glad she had because she done a beautiful job. My haircut I asked for a really layered style with bangs and I love it. Overall my experience here at the space was beyond my expectations from the moment I walked in with a lovely greeting from the girls to the second I walked out and was left with care.
