Update: House of optical reached out right away and offered for me to see another doctor. I was able to see Dr. Langton and he was incredibly patient and helpful in resolving all my concerns. I would definitely return to see Dr. Langton. I also want to shout out the front desk staff. They have been super nice and helpful. Original: Office staff were very friendly and helpful. I saw Dr. Robert Feldman. Although I felt he did a good job with the exam, the entire second half of my appointment felt extremely rushed. I specifically came here because I have had issues with my glasses prescription. When I asked if we could discuss my glasses, after he said we were done, he seemed very annoyed. He did take a look however, but his annoyance continued and he made me feel very rushed and unwelcome to ask questions. This is extremely upsetting considering I looked at many reviews and had this place recommended based on a community Facebook page. I am leaving with questions and concerns that were not addressed and will now need to come back because he already was gone immediately after my appointment ended. read more

First time going there today for an eye contact appt/ prescription . I asked dr. Friedman if they had samples and he said even if they did they don't have time for a fitting today..? Anywhere else I've ever gone they take the extra 10 minutes to see if they have samples in stock and if they do then they just do the fitment of the contact lens the same day. I asked one of the ladies at the front desk and they said he would have checked if they had in stock.. but I told them I don't think he wanted to even check... it turns out they did have the samples in stock so they let me take the samples but he needed to look at my eyes again with the contacts before he could give the prescription.. so they said they would ask if he could take a few minutes to do the "fitting" and he said no now I need to go back tomorrow for a 15 minute check so he can look at my eyes.. (when I was there anyway but didn't want to see if they had my prescription in stock) when he originally told me he'd call me back for the fitment when the trials came in in 7 days... he didn't even want to try.. and wants you to come back for 3 appts total before the prescription is issued. I've been a customer for over 20 years. I just called to make an appointment and was pretty disappointed in the attitude of the receptionist. Every question she asked me was as if she was doing me a favor to get in there. "Not sure what we have open", "I don't think we take your insurance", and then informed me she didn't think they did so she'll cancel that date we just booked. House of Optical? Where did you go? Aha, a mere few blocks east in a bigger, better, sparkling new facility. A true example of progress. On our last visit here, in 2018, we discovered this family owned business in a cramped little spot up the street. Quite the pleasant surprise to see they moved. Not only are they in an all new 4,000 square foot location, but with brand new state of the art equipment, as well. We had very little intention of buying glasses today. We had just visited our ophthalmologist and planned to take our script back home. We stopped on the off chance that glasses would be cheaper here. Good call. Today's purchase was just over half of last year's cost. To be exact, the bill was 46% cheaper. Some wonderful, helpful individuals took the time to work with us and make this a very positive experience. Our expert made a phone call to VSP and cut through red-tape for us. She even pointed us in the direction of the biggest savings. Not just a place to purchase new frames, they offer a variety of services. They have three full-time optometrists which means you can have a full comprehensive eye exam, contact lens exam or other medical eye care. You'll find rack after rack filled with great frames from Versace, Oakley, Burberry, Prada, Nike, Lacoste and more. Another great feature is the large stock of contact lenses they carry. Several interesting recent experiences lead me to believe that they are experts in making money. When my eye Rx changed slightly recently they suggested that buying and upgrading to new "best quality" lenses would help. The issue is that 12 months previously I was told that I bought and paid for their best - but apparently it wasn't. It was second best. I wouldn't have written this Yelp review if 5 months later I was billed an additional charge for the same glasses. Said they missed something. Yes, and I missed something too. ABSOLUTELY do NOT go to this optometry clinic!!!!!  I have been going to this place for 30+ yrs. I got my first pair of glasses here. Well I received a defective contact and when I went to replace it, they said my prescription had expired and refused.  This is not the first time this has happened either!!! I've been a patron of 10+ years and they wouldn't even replace my defective contact. Obviously they do not care for their patients, and do not go above and beyond in service. Janis waited on us and helped us make an appointment since the receptionist were busy. She also helped determine that the Kate Spade sunglasses I had selected came in a tortoise shell arm instead of the floral design. Have an eye exam and have our sunglasses and glasses on order. New building is nice and the staff is nice and friendly. Welcoming store and a good assortment of glasses and sunglasses options for men and women and kids. I do prefer when the men's and women's glasses are separated. My husband and I were able to find a pair we each liked almost immediately. We shall see how the eye exam and fitting goes in a couple of weeks. So far so good and we were better than satisfied with our first visit here and felt most welcome. Went tonight for our eye appointment for my husband and me. They ask to see my eyeglasses to see what my old script was at, handed them off and they would give them back once they were done with them. Gave them back in a jiffy. We were asked if we cared who why first and we said we didn't care. My husband was called in within 4-5 minutes after our appointment time. 11 minutes later and my husband was out of his appointment. I was in before my appointment time since my husband was before me and was also done in about 10 minutes. Dr. Simard was friendly and easy to talk to and explained what each of the tests or exams were looking for and made sure I didn't have any questions before escorting me back to the front. They have nice subtle decorations up for Christmas. They had my husband's glasses in storage but went able to find my sunglasses that were ordered a couple of weeks ago since I ordered different arms than the ones I tried on. Janice checked again in the back since she didn't want me to have to come back 2 more times to have to get my center eye and arm length measured and the 2nd time to pick up the glasses. Losing points with me since couldn't find my order from 2 weeks ago, that was supposed to take 3 days to get them. They were finally able to find the display frame so they could properly measure me this trip. Janice informed us that the lens is made at my insurance carrier's lab so that might take a bit longer. Front staff and the eyeglass techs are all amiable and easy to work with. So glad we ended up here after checking out several other eyeglass stores. Will give me feedback on the glasses and sunglasses when we get them in and fitted. read more

I used to love this place but the coating on my $600 lenses delaminated after 13 months making them useless and I was told that "just happens" sometimes. I wrote a letter to them, no response. I sent my sister there and her lenses cracked 4 times, she finally gave up and paid out of pocket to have them replaced properly. read more

This is my go to place for eyeglasses. I've gone to a few in the area other than the House of Optical and I always will circle back here. The service is impeccable and the selection is right on point. They offer a variety of glasses in different price ranges. And they have everything from eccentric to conservative frames. Their price ranges are very fair and I find them to be one of the most reasonably priced optical stores in the area. There are many that are competitive but it's always the House of Optical. House of Optical is a convenient place for a complete eye exam and to purchase glasses. The staff is polite and attentive with every customer. Walk-ins are welcomed but you should schedule an appointment if you need an eye exam. They have a decent selection of designer frames from D&G, Tory Burch, Prada, Gucci and Michael Kors. At the cost of these frames, luckily most insurance plans are accepted. My preference is to shop at local businesses rather than the chain stores. I've been going here for a few years now, even though I no longer live in Clawson. They have a great service and their business hours make it convenient to schedule an appointment. I've gotten prescription glasses, sunglasses, and contacts with no issues. I most recently brought my step kids in- one needed glasses and the other didn't. The one who needed glasses has needed a few adjustments as she got used to them, but we were always in and out with no issues to make them fit perfect. Bonus that they had a nice selection of frames in our budget and our insurance meant no out of pocket cost. Well then you can go to the botique locations and get great service, but they have a limited selection of frames that may not be to your liking. Well HOP is that nice sweet spot. This was the worst experience I have ever had with a doctor. I read the previous reviews, and the majority of them were very positive. My family moved to the area, so I was looking for a good eye doctor for my family. On the plus side, they did get me in for an eye exam in about a week. I was pretty disappointed that the doctor didn't even bother to introduce himself to me during the exam. House of Optical has numerous physicians working there, so I had no idea who I was seeing. I took a pair of unopened contact lenses with me, so the doctor could see the brand I usually wear. I told him I was happy with this brand and had issues with other brands. I ordered a year supply of contacts after the exam. When I went to pick them up, I noticed the box was not the same as what I currently have. I questioned whether these were a different brand, the receptionist checked my file, and assured me that this was correct and what the doctor ordered. I thought maybe the company had changed the box design since I last ordered a year ago. When I got home, I discovered that these were actually a different brand, and they cost 20% more PER box than the brand I have worn for years (I had ordered 7 boxes!) I immediately called the office, and said I would like to return these and get the brand that I usually wear. I was told that I would have to come back in to get refitted. I explained that the doctor did the contact fit exam with the contacts that I usually wear. I had never worn the brand he prescribed, nor did he ever discuss changing brands with me during the exam. The receptionist told me, sorry but in order to get another brand I had to have another refit exam. I then told her I wanted to return these contacts and get my written prescription, and I would order my contacts elsewhere. When I went to House of Optical, and returned the contacts and got my script, I noticed the script had the same incorrect contact lens brand on it. I asked to have this corrected, and was told this was all they had on file, and I would need a refit. At this point I asked to speak with a doctor or manager. Of course, the doctor I saw was at lunch, but I did speak with a very apologetic manager. Seeing the script was also the first time I was able to see the name of the doctor who did my exam - Dr. Robert Feldman. The manager assured me she would get the script corrected, and email it to me. When I received the "corrected" script, the brand of contacts was now correct, but the script was still inaccurate. I wear multifocal contacts. Only my nearsighted measurement was on the script, not the entire multifocal prescription. Once again, I had to contact the office and get this corrected. I will not be returning, nor will I allow my family to go there. I do not recommend House of Optical to anyone. Be very leery of their business practices. read more

I've gone to HoO for 4 years now, and more times than not, I leave frustrated or unhappy. Just one example of my frustration is last year I went to pick up my contacts and I was required to do a fitting or something, which I have never had to do. The doctor assured me at the previous visit that it would only take five minutes. I had to bring my one-year-old with me to the appointment. I arrived early and explained to the receptionist that the doctors assured me it would be a quick visit. Long story short, I waited for over an hour while multiple people went ahead and when I finally was called it literally took 2 minutes. It seems like they could have at least informed me how late the doctor was running so I wouldn't have to wait so long with a busy toddler. I would have left and come back. Beyond that, the general tone of reception is generally negative or rude. That said, I have had one or two good experiences with certain people in sales for glasses. They do have a wide selection of frames. Unfortunately it hasn't been strong enough customer service to keep me coming back. I'll be finding a new eye doctor with a more accommodating office staff and atmosphere. read more

Glasses were ready quickly and it was a swift and painless process to pick them up. They handle insurance well and clearly explained prices and plan benefits to me. I had my prescription done with another optometrist. My glasses were expensive because They are progressive lenses & turn Dark in the sun. I had my glasses done in August 2019, then tested with some reading they have there, I thought it was ok. New glasses & progressive. But at home I realized it was still so hard to read small print, I thought I had to adjust somehow. I Finally figured out that one of my lenses only has a minuscule 1/16 in sq area of close distance prescription and my eye never hits it. So if I want to see, I have to either close one eye and try with one lens, or take my glasses of and wear some reading glasses. Then COVid came. I have thought it is too late to fix this. But it is really annoying, every si for Day for 2 years, and to think I payed so much money for my glasses, I saved $ for over a year to buy them. I work at the computer and read all day, and is really a tremendous horrible experience with the result of glasses I have. People were very kind, but if I can't see, what is the point? read more

I'm writing this review solely on my experience today. I'd had two walk-in appointments in the past that were fine, nothing exceptional, but decent. I was sold a twelve-month supply of soft contacts, which I ended up wearing very infrequently...I simply wear my glasses more than my contacts. I decided to finally get a new batch of contacts through 1-800-CONTACTS and supplied my prescription info, doctor info, as well as a photo of the prescription on the side of the box (as suggested by the site). The next day I received a phone call from 1-800-CONTACTS telling me that House of Optical had flat-out refused to approve the prescription because I hadn't been in for an eye exam since after May 2011...even though the (unopened) contacts themselves were NOT expired. Please don't misunderstand me...I DO genuinely understand that doctors can't simply sign off of something after not seeing a patient for almost a year. However there was no suggestion of calling me and asking if the prescription was still fine (it is) or if I had any concerns...the 800-CONTACTS rep put me on hold while she called House of Optical, and was given a flat denial by the doctor regarding renewing the prescription. So now I can't get a new batch of contacts anytime soon without a pricey eye exam that I truly don't feel I need (especially since I have ZERO health insurance)...obviously they'll both have to be put off now. AGAIN, please know that I'm not judging on the basis of a doctor saying "Well, we need to reassess since it's been two years since we saw her"...but their flat-out refusal to even consider talking to ME and the fact that the contacts they'd sold me were NOT expired (and therefore still safe/acceptable to use!) yet they won't even approve an 800-CONTACTS renewal?!?! This gets my blood boiling a bit. I've read online that brick-and-mortar eye doctors hate 800-CONTACTS for cutting into their business, this can't help but reiterate that to me. I'd be writing something different if they'd said "Hey, let us call the patient ourselves, okay?" But that didn't happen. It was "Come back in for an (out-of-pocket) eye exam or tough luck." Sorry that I can't afford a $100 out-of-pocket exam (aside from the $200 cost of contacts) right now. Very sorry that providers can't take into account that not all of us can cough up $300 on demand...I guess I'll keep wearing my 12-year-old glasses. read more

We've been going here for a few years now and I'm still impressed how fast and easy the process is. It took less than a 1/2 hour for my husband to choose and frame and go through the ordering process. Even better, it was less than 4 business days for the glasses to be ready! The staff is really helpful in picking out frames and using your insurance to cover as much as possible. My husband has had an eye exam there and has been happy with that aspect, I still need to get myself in there for that. To any little boy or girl who got teased about wearing glasses, mosey on over to House of Optical for a refresher on awesome people who needed some vision correction. I used House of Optical strictly for the optometry services rather than ordering a new pair of glasses because I refuse to shill out for extra dollars to the Luxxotica empire if I can get away with it. Setting up an evening appointment was a snap, though the nearest one I could get this side of 5:00 PM was a week and a half out. No problem, updating my prescription hardly constitutes an emergency on my part. If yours does, House of Optical also has weekend hours and drop-ins available, although appointments are still highly recommended. Paperwork went through easily enough and the staff at the front desk minimized any unnecessary wait by processing my insurance information when I booked the appointment. Nine pages down in the new Kevin Hearne novel, they called my name and I went in for a breezy, quick appointment with the eye doctor. He took no more than fifteen minutes to set me up in the old school Norman Rockwell chair, drop a black lens over one eye, and get going. I proceeded to demonstrate my total inability to recognize Phoenician-style letters in use for the past two thousand years at a distance, he made light of my stabilizing prescription, and we chatted about the perils of new technology, squirmy toddlers, and laser-eye surgery, the pitfalls and benefits. House of Optical offers an optional $25 service for checking overall eye health using a fancy gizmo with flashing lights and peripheral vision measurement. Now that I have reached an age where eye health is increasingly important -- doubly so with all these screens and tablets around -- the extra service sets a great baseline for future work. The optical nurse/assistant who ran the tests was helpful and sweet, explaining everything in just the right amount of detail. Again, I was done lickety-split, in time to get out the door to make dinner for the little one. The glasses selection here is nothing to sneeze at, running between midrange brands up to the likes of Oakley, Michael Kors, Coach, and Versace. Word for the wise: 80% of glasses, especially designer brands, come from one manufacturer, Luxxotica. You'll pay for the badging plenty. Prices seem to fall between $70 to $250 for frames, scaling up or down with lenses and special effects. I noticed many contemporary styles, nothing too crazy or funky, but a nice selection to choose from. They accept VSP, a big plus. HoP is my go-to now for optometry and the periodic prescription update. read more
