Each time I interact with the front desk staff member, she comes across as overly pushy and does not clearly explain the charges. I was billed a $25 cancellation fee even though I rescheduled my appointment, and there was no prior mention of a rescheduling fee. When I asked for clarification, she dismissed my concerns and refused to acknowledge the difference. Additionally, I was charged for a contact lens exam even though it was essentially the same as a standard eye exam that is covered by my insurance. read more

Would not recommend getting eye care here. Throughout the visit they continuously tried to sell me additional services/items, an image of my retina (for an additional fee), sunglasses, contacts etc. When I was clear prior to the visit that I was there for just a glasses exam. The staff felt more like sales people than health professionals. I felt very uneasy at the conclusion of the visit, almost felt that i was being tricked. With that, I question the validity and accuracy of the results of my exam/prescription so much so that I want to get a second opinion. read more

I had a very good experience at Main Street Eye Care. Both the staff and the doctor were very careful in regards to COVID safety. I was met at the door, where someone took my temperature. There were only a limited number of people in the waiting area. My appointment was on time. When it came time to chose frames, I was instructed that I could try any on, but to set them aside so they could be cleaned before being returned to the rack. once you are fitted there is no service! You must be sure you are fitted correctly because you will be on your own after that there will be no adjustments! These optometrist were trained at Ferris State so it's no wonder it's about profitability and not quality service. Do not go here. read more

Edit: the response I got says the extra charges were for things the doctor thought I needed. Unfortunately, a lot of it was before I ever even met the doctor (such as a $40 substitute for dilation), or related to my contact and glasses purchase. I only wanted my lenses replaced on my glasses and the salesperson was VERY pushy, telling me I was wasting my insurance money (I still ended up paying over $100 out of pocket). The woman working at the desk was very short with me too. All around a big disappointment after seeing Dr Lyons for years. I used to see Dr Lyons at this location. I am not a fan of the new owners. They make you feel like you're at a car dealership, upselling you every step of the way. The doctor also gave me an incorrect prescription. I went back a week later because I couldn't see and was getting headaches. He admitted the prescription was wrong but did nothing to correct the glasses I had already ordered. I asked about it, and he said they would be fine. I also ordered anti-scratch coating on them and they were scratched within a month. I just got a reminder to schedule my next appointment, but I will not be back. read more

Additionally, I have requested that they remove me from their mailing list several times, to no avail. I would highly recommend that you steer clear of this business. Any business that uses contact information without permission and refuses to discontinue filling your mailbox with junk mail shows a lack of professionalism. read more

Took a large family to Main Street Eye Care for exams and glasses. Very cozy and friendly office. knowledgable staff, and thorough exam. Dr. Chorney took time with each of my kids during the exam to explain their eye health, and gave them strategies to keep eyes safe during screen time. We will be back! read more

This optical boutique in downtown Royal oak is definitely the cutest. The staff here is amazing. The glasses selection and the most I've ever seen for a small optical. The Doctor suggests what he think is best for your eye care needs. I would definitely tell others about my experience. read more

Had a great experience at my visit here and look forward to continuing to come here for my future visits! From the second I walked in the door, the ladies at the front desk were super helpful. They provide different options of coffee pods for their keurig in the cute waiting area as well as water bottles. They did not try to push the inner eye exam on me like the chain stores usually do, and Megan (who was the one helping me) was fun and personable and made me feel very comfortable while trying to read the letters on the screen. The doctor I saw was very polite and explained everything to me clearly as well. When I was picking out frames, I spent a good 30 mins trying different ones on and asked the girls to look up about 8 different prices for me and they were happy to do so and give me their opinion on the frames on my face shape. Dr. Chorney and his staff are wonderful! I CANNOT RECOMMEND THEM ENOUGH! Top notch customers service. My first visit was right after Dr. Chorney took over for Dr. Lyons, and while he was great, the front office staff left a little to be desired. Glad to see that changes have been made and he now has a rockstar crew in there! This was my second time back, and first time being fitted and tested for contact lenses. Dr. Chorney made sure to explain everything in a very understandable, plain manner. The staff held a "class" teach me how to put them in and took the time to make sure I was comfortable doing so myself. I had trouble with the fit of a lens and on my follow-up appointment they adjusted and ordered a different type that is perfect. they even went so far as to explain my insurance benefits to me, as I was unsure what was covered. The eye doctor was aggressively trying to get me to get progressive lenses glasses. I only need glasses to drive to and from work and/or running errands, which amounts to less than an hour a day. I let him know I would not get glasses to wear every waking hour when I only need them for a short period of time. He also "recommended" I get the blue glare, which is not covered by my current insurance. He was trying to force me to spend extra money, and I had to keep reminding him "I only want what is covered under my insurance." These doctors, no matter what field, will try to make you spend more money to go in their pockets. read more

I've been wearing contacts for nearly 30 years and lived all over the country, meaning I have had dozens of different eye doctors. My experience at Main Street Eye Care was my far the worst. First, I was there for exams for myself and my six year old child. We waited in the cluttered and disorganized waiting area for over 30 minutes before we were seen. The staff was unprofessional, speaking loudly about personal matters and complaining about various things. Then we met the doctor. He was irritated with me because I didn't know the specifics regarding the contacts I had been wearing and didn't bring the box with me. Had I known I needed this, I would have provided it. I've never been asked for this before. Heck, I had time to go home and back to grab them had I known I needed them and would be waiting so long. The doctor was short with both me and my son and then recommended contacts that I had no desire to get- with built in bifocals and costing over $1000 for 6 months after insurance. I said I really was happy with my Acuvue, but they insisted I take the sample of the expensive lenses. I tried them, didn't see they were any better than my Acuvue and when I called to say I didn't want those and wanted to order Acuvue (I had the box), I was told that he only examined me for the expensive ones and I'd have to come in for another exam! On to my son...My son really wants glasses and has a history of "throwing" the results. Our previous doctor (who was great but changed practices and was a good 30 minute drive) understood this and spent time with him until she was certain she had determined he did not need glasses. But then my son failed his school eye test and I had to get another exam. This doctor was brisk and ended up with the complete opposite diagnosis than school (nearsighted vs farsighted) and would not listen to me regarding my prior experience with this child. He recommended that he get glasses and then was frustrated with me when I said his staff told me his office did not accept our insurance for glasses, only exams and I'd need the prescription so I could buy them elsewhere. He was rude and argued with me. I was only telling him what HIS staff said to me regarding HIS ability to accept insurance (we have insurance through Ford btw- pretty common). I ended up paying out of pocket for my son to get an exam elsewhere, where they determined he does NOT need glasses and had he gotten them, it would have been bad for his eyes. Overall, I was treated poorly (like I was an idiot), everyone there was unprofessional and the main goal seemed to be to get as much money out of me as possible. I ended up being so frustrated that I paid out of pocket for a new exam for myself elsewhere. I am now driving 30 plus minutes both ways to my old doctor- that's how awful my experience with this office was. read more

To be fair, I don't have any critique of the quality of the medical care I received there, and they were obviously taking Covid precautions seriously. The front desk staff were polite and helpful, which was a common thing I read people complaining about in other reviews. However, I didn't enjoy the experience and I won't go back. I think the doctor owns the practice, and the priorities really show; I felt like I was being upsold on everything the entire visit. They insisted on a $40 retinal scan insurance doesn't cover, they aggressively pushed (much more expensive) daily lenses even though I had been using longer-wear contacts for many years, the doctor casually picked up $50 of their own retail products (solutions, drops, etc.) off a shelf leaving the exam room on the way to the desk to pay (I refused to buy them because a 4-second search on my phone showed the same items are cheaper on Amazon), and they wanted me to come back (and pay for) a follow-up visit two weeks later to actually get my contact prescription (they only gave me a glass prescription). I've never gone to a follow up for a contact lens prescription exam in my life. Even with insurance coverage of the exam I ended up paying $95 out of pocket, and left without the contact prescription that I had paid to have the exam for; doing some reading this may or may not actually be legal for them to do, especially since I can see online they made a benefit claim to my vision insurance for the contact lens fitting. The doctor wasn't rude, but I felt like a lot of the things he had to say about the way I use and wear contacts had a very chastising tone, which I didn't really care for. I'm not going back there, and now I have to pay for another contact fitting exam someplace else that my insurance won't cover this year in order to actually get the contact lens prescription I paid for (you can't order them with a glass prescription). I went to this office mostly to avoid going into someplace like Costco (where I've seen optometrists before) during the pandemic, and Costco is probably where I'll end up going now anyway. read more

Very sad to see Dr. Lyons retire. Had such a better experience with Dr. Lyons. It was weird and felt like a franchise unlike what I've experienced in the past. Former employee (so possibly, my perspective is skewed) and a paying client. My nephew's frame (that I paid for) broke. The frame is discontinued, but there was a frame in the office (which is about to break in the same place as my nephew's frame). When frames are under warranty, you typically have to return the broken frame for credit from the distributor and get a new one for no charge. I am a highly intelligent adult and I realize this. I was willing to pay cost for the frame (they wanted to charge me retail) to save myself another trip in there. They are forcing me to bring the broken frame in. I would think logically that they would have rather sold me the frame at cost, which is what the distributor would have credited them (and saved them the effort of sending the broken frame in and paying to ship it) so the dollar amount would have been a wash. I started to protest and was shouted at. The owner was completely rigid and unwilling to bend. UPDATE 4/2/18 The lenses were NOT free. The lenses were entitled to a remake because it was a premium coating, which carries a two year warranty. I simply suggested that I pay cost on the frame, I never DEMANDED anything free. Me paying you what the distributor would have credited you would have satisfied me and saved you the effort of packing it up and paying the cost to ship it back. The frame you have there is loose in the exact same spot (that male/female end is loose), so if I have to drag my nephew in there anyway, we're choosing a new, undamaged frame. I would like to add that I am still a paying client and I sincerely hope you don't speak to all paying clients the way you're speaking to me. Oh my God. read more
