The Sylvia had dozens of blooms with variations of orange sherbet growing as tall as me. Super prolific with tall single stems, perfect for vases. The Jowey Winnies were my favorite grown this year. The blooms were purple to pink to yellow from the edge of the petal to the center. These produced blooms that changed color shades as the season changed. Pastels in early summer to candy colors through October. The amount of tubers I got from these will let me plant a full perimeter of dahlias next year. I can't wait. I later returned to the store to purchase fabric and other items. July 29, 2025 I purchased some items including a ruler that cost $42.50 + tax. When I got home I realized I already had the ruler and about 1 week later tried to return it in it's UNOPENED package (I live in the hills so it is about a 30 minute drive to the store so I didn't immediately try to return the item). I was told they do not give cash refunds, only store credit because, quote "some people abused the return policy". This is a violation of Washington State Law but they don't care. I took the following information from Washington's Consumer Protection Agency's site: 1. Disclose the return policy: Retailers must clearly communicate their return policy to customers before they make a purchase. This can be done through signs in the store, information on the receipt, or on the retailer's website. 2. How many days does a customer have to return a product under Washington's consumer protection regulations? Under Washington's consumer protection regulations, a customer has seven business days to return a product for any reason. 9. Minimum Return Policy Disclosures - Retailers must clearly display their store's minimum return policy -- whether it is no refund at all or store credit only -- on all signs and receipts. I have decided to keep the ruler and never do business with them again. Nowhere is it posted in their store about the return policy, it is attached to the receipt which you get AFTER you have paid for the product making it non-returnable. Of course, I doubt that they care if I come back because they already got the big money from me.

The vision owners Gene and Dawn O'Neil have for Puget Island Garden Center is brilliant, something I haven't seen before:  They have benches, little round wrought iron table-and-chair sets, single and double sets of chairs for resting/sitting/reflecting and communing, even a hammock between two trees set off from the Puget Island Garden Center itself. What used to be a llama barn, Gene remodeled into a store where they sell all kinds of garden supplies and more.  It's an eclectic of their (Gene and Dawn) idiosyncratic creative interests, lovingly displayed. But there are actually 4 buildings, more like a garden complex. Each building has a purpose: in here are the veggie starts, this building has annuals for pots on the porch or deck, etc. The lovely part was how, since unlike urban garden centers with limited space, they have plenty of room, each structure spaced apart with rows of plants, set on table-like settings and, interspersed, are all those lovely little spots to sit and visit and reflect.  Dawn said their vision is to have the Puget Island Garden Center be a destination and indeed that is what it is!  They had healthy plants and trees of every type. So hard to limit what to buy! I bought a beautiful black lace elderberry I'm excited about. Natalie, the plant expert, is so knowledgeable. When my friend or I had questions, we went to Natalie, a brilliant plant goddess who looks herself as if she grew right out of a columbine, a very knowledgeable young horticulturist.  They have plans to use the rest of the 5 acres to actually grow what they sell, but for now, they have to buy the plants. Dawn and Gene, so friendly and generous with their stories, suggested we stop at "Little Island Creamery" where we needed to purchase the brie cheese because it had just won #1 'best brie cheese' at the national cheese organization. After we left, we went to The Spar (does every town and city have a restaurant named the Spar?) where we met the most delightful server, Wren, who served us one of the best sandwiches. What a memorable day.

The owners are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet and Natalie, the Garden Manager, is incredibly knowledgeable about plants, gardening and landscaping. She helped me identify which herbs/flowers I should plant together and the best placement for them in my backyard. Oh and the garden center is leashed dog friendly, which is a huge plus I'm excited to come back and enjoy their upcoming events!
