A few years ago my cat, Seamus, developed cancer. A veterinary oncologist and I opted to make him as comfortable as possible in his last days. At some point the fateful day arrived, and I knew it was time for Seamus. Clearly the pain of the cancer was overwhelming his pain medication. A friend had recommended House Paws for at-home euthanasia. Given my cat's intense dislike of the vet, I figured that putting him to sleep at home would allow him to go with some dignity and comfort. Dr. Knode and her assistant arrived and quickly and professionally put him to sleep. Afterwards, they kindly gave me some quiet time to say good bye to my ole buddy, which I greatly appreciated. Disappointing service we received and a very rude unprofessional LOUD sigh from Knode when she walked out of the room. Use to use their mobile services in Lovettsville before they had the little house across from Andy's. John visited our home and he was great. Continued to use them and found out they had a Round Hill location. Went to Round Hill location because it was closer to where we moved to. After that visit, we never went back. Also asked for an estimate to have our dogs teeth cleaned. Emailed a few times, never got a response. Would not recommend. read more

I have since moved outside of House Paws' service area, and I miss them greatly. They were perfect for my two cats, who were terrified at the vet (think heavy-duty leather gloves and blood from the technicians). With in-home visits, the cats were calm during exams and shots. Dr. Knode and her assistant were wonderful, caring, and thorough in their treatments and follow-up. I found their cost to be reasonable, especially considering they came to me. I wish they would expand to Laurel, MD, as I haven't found a good mobile vet since I moved. read more

I used to use this vet but when I realized they price gouge I stopped taking my 4 animals there. For my one dog, they quoted me $1600-2500 for 2 teeth removals. They charged me multiple hours and multiple times for anesthesia and other drugs used, even though it would not be that long for teeth extraction. I went to a vet in Leesburg instead and it cost $800 for the same procedure. The Leesburg vet was great and great customer service! I now live in Lovettsville and used the House Paws there but I will now drive to Leesburg every time due to this blatant price gouging. read more

Dr. Knode is one of the most kind, gentle people I know, and will take excellent care of your furry friend in the comfort of your own home. Prior to her in-home service, my family would request Dr. Knode to care for our pets at the Old Dominion Animal Health Center in McLean. Not only was she possibly the only reliable doctor there, she was the only one patient enough to explain our cats' health problems to us. We had a cat with hyperthyroid problems who lived with those problems for years (we ended up taking him to radiocat, which Dr. Knode told us about). When my cat Leela was diagnosed with diabetes on November 4, 2008, it was Dr. Knode that assured me she could live a long, happy life with diabetes as long as I followed her instructions. I did, and my kitty never, ever had a problem as a diabetic. When she got cancer earlier this year, Dr. Knode helped me through that difficult time, doing everything she could to help, from consoling a hysterical me to finding trusted technicians who could perform services that she could not at my dining room table (specifically an ultrasound on Leela's stomach). I lost Leela to cancer, but this woman did everything she possibly could to try and prevent that. When the end came (in the comfort of my own home, i might add), Dr. Knode made an otherwise heart-breaking event as easy for my family as it could have been, and let me hold her until the very end. I would happily protest any negative review of Dr. Knode, am happy to do so at length, and would go so far as to say that if you choose Housepaws, your family member and beloved furry friend would be in the care of a loving soul, and your pet will never be safer. read more

I have been using House Paws and Dr. Knode for many years now. She is wonderful with my 20-year old cat, and provided wonderful care and advice when I lost two other older kitties. House Paws is always responsive to my phone calls and emails, and are willing to work with me when I make important medical decisions. I have never felt pushed to do something I wasn't comfortable with, and I was always given options for care. I truly can't say enough good things about the House Paws team. I used House Paws for a year. My cat had/has chronic ear issues. She had a black crusty discharge from her ears that would go into the skin, around her mouth and whisker area. Initially I took her in Feb 2020. I was told they needed to do testing to determine what kind of infection it was. After the testing, was told ear infections are one or more of 3 issues: mites, yeast or just infection. Then was told def not mites, just regular infection and they didn't see any skin issues. Treatment was a 30 day antibiotic shot and ear drops in the office, and was told they didn't see any skin conditions. $250. At the 30 day mark when the shot wore off her issues were back. Repeat in August. September rolls around and she has scratched her ear so bad that it filled with blood, so I took her to get it drained. Prior to going in, had spent the entire week attempting to get pricing on the procedure which I did not receive until after the appointment. Once there, the dr did not want to drain it, she said it would drain on its own and be fine. More testing. Was told it was definitely yeast. She was treated with an ear drop medication that seemed to be very effective, but the charges were only around $150 this time. Prescription ran out in 2 weeks and was told they would not refill it (without seeing her again) as it's intended use was very short term. By mid October, the blood dried in her ear and she developed cauliflower ear, which is crinkled and very damaged. So I called to get all records mailed to me. After a lengthy conversation with the receptionist, she asked if I was requesting the records for a new vet. I said yes. She then informs me I have an outstanding balance of $29. When I told her I had paid everything in full, she informed me there was a prescription I did not pick up (yet I was told they would not refill it without seeing her again). Unbelievable. After taking her to another vet, I was told the yeast overgrowth in her ears was terrible, they gave her a steroid shot to reduce the inflammation, an antifungal prescription and a 6 month prescription for the same medicine House Paws told me was only intended for short term use. This vet actually listened to me about all the symptoms vs one part of them so now the issue is being treated properly. Disappointment is an understatement. My cat suffered permanent damage due to their care/advice. Throughout the year there, I felt they were trying to put me on a $250 per month income for themselves. The issues with my cat were not like attempting to treat a rare blood cancer. This was a yeast infection in her ears. They should be ashamed of themselves. read more

Dr. Knode could become more helpful and compassionate to owners of sick pets and their sick family members who are under Hospice care. She refused to allow us to use an online medication company, 1-800-pet-meds for our pets prescription needs which would have been sent to us by mail when out of town caring for a sick parent. This required us to drive four hours to pick-up the written prescription. This caused a two week delay of our pet's medication which was for an infection that needed immediate attention. It would have also saved us $68 on a $149 prescription. I think her selfish greed took over her common sense on how to be caring and compassionate to pets and people. I will NEVER use this vet again and encourage all pet owners to look into the other great Veterinarian services in the Loudoun area. Your pet deserves better. read more

Dr. Knode arrived, did some bloodwork, and suggested that our cat take daily medication for hyperthyroid problems. We were not given any alternatives, and then went to get a second opinion. Another vet we saw for a second opinion told us about Radiocat (http://www.radiocat.com/). We opted to use that treatment instead. I was annoyed that Dr. Knode had not told us about Radiocat and did not remember to send me our cat's bloodwork after she said she would. I had to reach out and request a copy of the bloodwork. Then, House Paws asked if we would begin administering medication. When I said we were pursuing other options, they asked what other options we might be considering, etc. I think it's our duty to make sure our pets can live without being forced to take daily medication. I don't think House Paws delivered adequate services because we weren't presented options. read more

I don't have liberty to randomly take off for an appointment, so I shot over an email requesting an in-house visit and had a response for an appointment this afternoon within an hour. I reached out to House Paws very early Friday morning when I was desperately looking for a veterinarian who would do a euthanasia house call. I thought it might be time to euthanize my elderly dog Frodo who seemed to be in pain and was having difficulty getting around. From the very first contact, House Paws was exceptional. Danielle was my first encounter--I sent her an email explaining the situation, and she responded within minutes. Her response was even before 0900--when the practice actually opens. And she not only let me know they could visit that day or Monday, she also asked me if Frodo was on pain medicine. This conversation may not seem like a big deal, but this first encounter told me that someone at this practice cares; they care about my dog's welfare and my high stress level. I am so grateful Danielle asked me about my Frodo's medicines because that sparked the idea that just maybe he wasn't really close to needing euthanasia. We opted to have the team come out that day, and we changed the focus from euthanasia to health/pain assessment. From the moment the team (Dr. Amanda Van Pelt and Chandler Petty) arrived, they were excellent. They were patient, caring, and kind to Frodo. They took blood--this took 3 tries because of his hard to access veins. Not once did the team get impatient or rough with Frodo. They also watched him walk and assessed his limbs. My husband and I were relieved to find that an adjustment in pain meds was the recommended way forward. And, they had the meds available in their truck! As for Frodo, this was the first vet visit where he was relaxed and just taking it all in. (I wish I had thought about mobile vets when Frodo was much younger. It would have saved him a lot of unnecessary stress--he never likes going to the vet's office.) Finally, regarding the schedule and payment. The team was due to arrive at 11:45; they got here at 11:30. Now, scheduling can vary either way--so we realized that 11:45 was just a goal, it wasn't a hard, fast number. So if you do call them, please understand they could be delayed. I was so excited to find a practice that seemed top notch that I would have gladly waited hours. (And after actually meeting the team, I can safely say I will wait for them--they are worth it!) As for the price, I thought it was more than reasonable--I was really prepared to pay twice the amount. I think House Paws prices are very competitive with other veterinarian's prices--to include those in buildings vice trucks. I can't applaud House Paws enough. I am so grateful to them. We have used their services twice. First time to check on our old dog who was very sick. I was not present at this visit but my husband had nothing but good things to say about them, saying they were very professional and attentive. The second time (and the reason for a five star review) was yesterday when I found our dog passed away on her pillow. It was very early in the morning and I after leaving a message on their answering machine received a call back within a reasonable time frame. I requested that they would come and pick up the body (I was home alone with two small children) . Once they arrived they were extremely friendly and clearly sorry for our loss. They were quick and considerate to the fact that I couldn't watch them do it and did not want my kids to see it either. As for the cost? Completely reasonable. I will use their services only from now on for our cat. I highly recommend them, Dr. Knode is wonderful. read more

Dr. Knode has been caring for our 6 cats and beagle for 3 or 4 years, and I've been so happy with her care. She clearly loves animals (especially beagles) and is so good with all our animals. The practice now includes an additional vet and more office staff, so my only complaint is that it is not as intimate as it was. Be careful - out to squeeze your money from you. Two supposedly vet personnel came to my home to euthanize my 15 yr old newfie, who was clearly dying. My personal vet was unable to make it, so the 'vet' insisted on a exam, which consisted of basically nothing but charging me a $65 fee, added to a $75 house call, plus a $150 euthanasia fee. I was shocked to see her try to hard sell me on 'lab tests' or 'admitting my dog' to their care/hospital. These people have dollar signs in their eyes - thank God my judgement wasn't impaired. Hope no one else was ripped off by this scam. read more

When I first moved to the VA area, I used House Paws. I was young and poor and couldn't afford to keep using them until now. I called them because my cat was acting off and they came out within the hour to examine him. Dr. Ronda and Debbie were so friendly and helpful from the moment they walked in the door. They listened to my concerns and searched for the problem. Dr. Ronda said she can't find a problem if she doesn't go searching for it. I found that comforting when any other exam my cat has had in the past, they only did the regular checks. House Paws Mobile Vet are top notch and I will only use them from now on and will recommend them to all my friends and family with pets in the area. vet came to my apartment and charged me alomst 400.00 for services. then never called us with results nor did they return my many calls requesting results. when the finally did call me back and said my pet would need meds and would she like pill or drops. i said drops and they send me pills nor do they respond to my phone calls requesting drops. once they get your money they dont care. please please please if you love your pet dont use this vet. worst experience every. read more

Responsive, friendly, and professional. Without any previous contact with them I emailed House Paws early on a Monday and they it back to me even before opening hours with an appointment that morning. We had two vets come to our house to inspect our sick dog and it ended up costing less than visiting our old vet. I highly recommend over both traditional vet offices and other home visit services. I emailed two services that morning and a week later am still waiting for the other one to get back to us. read more

I was surprised to read the previous review. I have used House Paws for several years now for my 10 year old cat who has "issues" going in a carrier and in the car. We are talking panting, drooling, shaking, vomiting, crying, etc... this goes on for hours even after getting home. With Dr. Knode, he is perfectly fine and is purring within minutes of his shots. It's amazing. They are pricey because of their "house-call" fee, but in a case like this it is definitely worth it. We recently adopted a new kitten as well and they are helping us get him healthy and settled in. While the kitten does not have the same issues as the older cat (thank God!), it is nice to have them both looked at, at the same time in a home environment. Dr. Knode was even able to point out that our loft area is unsafe for the kitten until his motor skills are more developed- he could fall out. I never would have thought of that! The lack of the fifth star is because 1) Weekend hours exist, but are difficult to get, 2) I believe it is just Dr. Knode and her assistant, so when they are out on the road doing visits they do not answer their phone. I find they do respond quickly to emails, and will return calls but you may have wait a little while to hear back. 3) They are pricey. read more

They arrive on time, are very sweet and gentle with our cat during the exam and bloodwork, provide us with important information and options for care and they never make us feel rushed. I've used House Paws for several years and, like the previous commenter, I'm surprised to see the negative review. Dr. Knode has provided wonderful care to my two elderly cats, one of whom finds car rides to be traumatic. Dr. Knode is almost always on time (and in the rare case she's running late, she lets me know). She's also a cat lover and knows how to handle the cats so that they stay calm and everyone is happy. When one of my cats developed a medical condition that required treatment, she took the time to thoroughly discuss all of the options for care. The house call fee is expensive, but if you have multiple animals who will be seeing her, you only pay once which I think is very fair. Plus, the animals receive great care and it's a more pleasant experience for everyone. I'd highly recommend her! read more

No stars for this one! I see other "unhappy" reviews here so I'm going to add mine. I've just had my 2nd visit from House Paws. I think this is a much needed valuable service & looked forward to the visit for shots for my Doberman & Great Pyrenese puppy. I had to wait a full month before the appt. finally took place after my initial contact. It didn't take but about 5 minutes before Dr. Knode "went off" at me because I had the "audacity" to ask if her exam was required to get shots. (Who's the client here??? At worst she was a guest in my home.) It went downhill from there, with her balling up the exam sheets and almost throwing them at me when I asked more questions. She hurt my puppy giving him his shot. So far, after 7 days I have yet to receive the promised Rabies Vaccination Certificates from her which need to be sent to the county for dog licenses. She was rude, petty, & obnoxious. I'll never have her in my home or near my dogs again and wouldn't advise anyone else to have her either. It's too bad. This service could be a really good thing if they do something to replace her. read more
