It's been a really long time since I went to Ben Franklin Market City. I needed to prep some lei for the kid's senior night and went hunting for options. I knew I wanted either paper lei or eyelash yarn lei, even tho I've never done either. Wish me luck. I went first to the paper crafts section. Thank goodness the paper punches were in stock as were the cardstock packs in the colors I wanted. There were sample sizes and finished sample lei for those of us who can only work with 3D concepts. Then I went to the yarn section. All the yarns were neatly sectioned by type and color. There were signs and descriptions and also finished samples with the types of yarn. The most impressive highlight for me was the staff! Everyone I encountered was helpful, patient, and gave advice willingly. One was leading a workshop and I felt bad just asking for her to call for someone to assist but she was like "I gotchu, what advice do you want?" Then I found someone else closer to the yarns and asked her and she was also very matter-of-fact with the advice. Very helpful and practical. I renewed my membership for $10 which already paid for itself coz the 10% discount was $12. I think. I better not get obsessed with another new hobby!! read more

It has been a long time since I've been inside a Ben Franklin store. I think I went with my mom when I was a kid and my first time to Hawaii. They utilize the space very well! I could spend a couple of hours just wandering around. It looks like they have knitting classes and other craft classes too. I wish I needed something but I was just tagging along. Love this store and location. Plenty of parking. Huge interior with many local items to make local crafts. Staff are friendly and helpful when asking about particular crafts and supplies. Cost is higher but this is a local store and in town so you pay for convenience. Aisles filled with everything from clay, paints, poster boards, yarn, scrapbook materials, wood and everything you can imagine. This is one of those stores you wander the aisles looking at the shelves for interesting hobbies you may want to experience. Always an interesting time walking the aisles to just look and imagine what can be created. Definitely a place to take a look at and just explore that creative part of yourself! read more

This is my favorite Ben Franklin to visit. The staff here are so friendly, especially Roni at the register. I really enjoy coming here for when I have the edge to craft because they have the supplies that I'm looking for for the most part. There will be a time every once in a while where I'm looking for specific things that have become very viral and they're unavailable, but that just means I have to come back. Today I had a very niche question and I was able to be helped by Gena who took the time out to look up the answer for me and help me find exactly what I was looking for for my project. The store is very interestingly organized so you do have to dig a little deep for certain things. But that's where the customer service comes in. I was checking out and I asked about a certain thread that was not with the other thread, and Roni was able to point me to the right direction. Anyway, I love coming here and as a member of the craft club, I do save 10% every time I come here so me spending a lot here makes me feel better with this club discount. I also prefer to shop here then buy art supplies on big box retailers online because shopping up in Franklin is supporting the community. Most convenient location for townies in the market city shopping center across kaimuki high school. Obvi all locals know this store. Some things are overpriced and maybe can find elsewhere but what can you do. It's quality also for all your arts and crafting needs. I like that the workers are helpful and friendly and always willing to explain and give suggestions in a friendly manner. They really are there to help and are pretty knowledgeable of items and where everything is in the store. I've recently wanted to try new/different hobbies so I checked what classes they offer as I always knew they offered classes just didn't try um out till now. So far I've tried out two classes - beginner crochet and a resin coaster making class! Reasonable price that they include the materials and some extra to take home and a good understanding of learning! The instructor or teacher of both classes I had were the same, her name was Marissa and I think she was a good teacher! Sometimes it's not enough that we see a vid on YouTube and if they are not good teaching then sometimes it's hard to understand but if you have someone actually in front of you physically it really makes a difference. That's how I felt with crochet I couldn't get it correctly on my own but in person it was much easier. The resin class was so fun! Did it with a few of my friends and its just a nice outlet to try something new and use your creative side if you are into crafts! Nice break from adulting :) Marissa seems like she's a pro at crochet and other crafts! I've also bought their 'wappon'? - transfer heat patches that are sooo cute! Bought a whole bunch for party favors to do as an activity! I think it's worth it to sign up for membership if you consistently do crafting. read more

Ben Franklin used to be the go to craft store but now they are expensive and not as much stuff.

I'm not an artsy fartsy "crafts" kinda guy, but what brought me here at Ben Franklin is because I was looking for a wooden stick/pole. I have an old dust pan that I use in the yard, and over the years, the metal dust pan handle broke (as the handle rusted out) due to us leaving the dust pan outside in the elements. Normally, I would just throw away the dust pan & buy a new dust pan at a hardware store but since our old dust pan was perfectly fine & just needed a new handle, I decided to fix it. After thinking about where I could buy a wooden stick/pole, Ben Franklin came to mind. Where is the Ben Franklin store located? I know there there are several Ben Franklin's around the islands, but the store I went to was located at the Market City Shopping Center. The Ben Franklin crafts store is fronting across the street from Kaimuki High School. Upon looking around the store, I realized the store is more than just artsy fartsy crafts, as the store also sold tools, picture fames, baking/cooking pans, sewing items, and alot more stuff that I couldn't have imagined. I like to shop here because it's a local store and they almost always have everything I need, but sometimes the prices are lowkey crazy. Don't get me wrong. I'm willing to pay a bit more to support local stores, but some of the stuff is clearly marked-up AliExpress merch. For example, they recently expanded their selection of fun trendy beads which is awesome....except the beads are $1 each. Maybe I'm just not with the times on bead prices, but $1 each seems a little steep to me. For reference, these exact beads will run you 99 cents for a pack of 10 online. Mod Podge, which costs $5-10 at W*lmart, costs anywhere between $12 and $25 here. I like supporting local, but I don't like being run for my money. Overall I recommend this store, but I also recommend shopping with discretion to avoid getting ripped off. read more

Shopping in Honolulu, Hawaii... My mom needed pins to make wreaths. Ben Franklin was nearby, so, I took her there. It's a craft store with other locations in Mapunapuna and Kailua. This one is at Market City Shopping Center - on the lower level. The closest entrance to the free shared parking lot is on Kaimuki Avenue. We both used to have Club Cards which give members a discount. Our memberships expired and we don't visit often enough to renew our memberships. That's okay... We still will visit because of the great selection of items and friendly service! I used to be more crafty. I have purchased yarn, ribbon, rubber stamps, pens, paper, elastic, card stock, ornaments, stuffing for pillows, fabric, etc. from Ben Franklin in the past. On this visit, mom was able to find the pins that she needed. She also got the last two wreath bases and a few sprigs of poinsettia and holly with Christmas berries and pine cones! Horrendous service here. I think she's a manager here, her name is Cherie Ann or something like that. She's rude and is very disinterested in helping customers. We love to support local but why should I pay more and get treated like dirt? This is not the first time I've noticed her bad attitude either. Best time was day after Christmas! My friend and I still delivering Christmas presents because everyone was too busy. Afterwards, we had a lunch special at Gyotaku. Before going back to the office, I needed to get these multi iPhone plugs (2 iPhones and/or iPad). These are hard to find and great gift to all my iPhone friends and families at $20 each. They come in red, black, gray, pink, and white...about 5 ft long. Funny, I need to charge my phone while on it...in front of my television. You can call it multi-tasking...Lol! While there, Im planning early for next year. We decided to browse around and found these kids $3 poppers which comes handy to destress or while waiting more than 20-30 minutes in a line. However, I got a chance to look at other possibilities crafts I can do and hopefully have time to work on some hobbies of mine. The friendly staff are on floor giving suggestions and/or directing to your requested items. If you don't have a $10 yearly membership, you should get one. You get 10% off of all purchases. I was looking for a Michaels store but I guess in Hawaii they only have Ben Franklin. This store has a solid variety of silk flowers I purchased the hibiscus which I felt at 30% off it was a good value for my money! I also purchased frame which was overpriced but I needed one badly and paper. I like the variety of Japanese word stamp which are hard to fine. Definitely would like to see more variety I'm happy to use what they have so far read more

I don't do arts and crafts so much, but when I do, Ben Franklin's is where I go. I never really tried to research where is the best place to go for supplies. When it comes to general supplies, I used to always go to Fisher's in Kakaako. Ben Franklin's is a decent sized store that also carries seasonal items that are great for DIY projects or just general decorating, such as during Halloween or Christmas. They always have what I'm looking for. I've bought ribbons, calligraphy supplies, cardstock paper, markers, and more. The only thing that I've had difficulty getting my hands on were mason jars. I heard from a staff that those are very hot items that sell fast and you'd have to just be lucky to catch a shipment day. The service here is what stands out to me. Most staff members are enthusiastic to help you, have a positive attitude, and even give great suggestions. Lastly, the store has sort of an unofficial mascot that I'm sure everyone would be happy to meet! Toby! I often see a cute gray cat just chilling in front of the store and the cashier told me that Toby has been visiting for a while now and isn't scared of people. As a matter of fact, he lets you pet him! Well I guess it's obligatory of me to tell you to pet him at your own risk, but he seems harmless/friendly enough for you to say hi! lol read more

My go to craft store! I've been coming to this location since middle school... It first started when I made my own leis for people. I would buy the ribbons here over walmart as they well too me felt like it had the specific option I needed. Now days I drop by here after checking if target has it first then walmart then here. As over the years I realized they are much more pricy if walmart carries the product. But they are still a great craft store if you need googly eyes or a button. read more

Gotta take the time to update this review... My hat goes off to Kelly today who did a most wonderful thing. I was scrambling to make favors for an upcoming clinic party in two days. Had a couple ideas in mind. I saw a demo craft hanging in the party supplies on the back wall and thought, "This is perfect!". Not too complicated, doesn't look expensive to make... I asked a sales rep for help finding the supplies to make the necklace favor and whaddayaknow, Kelly was the person who actually made it! Not only that, she taught me how to make the bow by scratch to save a ton of money!! She took the time to bring out the materials and sit on an empty table. She first showed me how to do it while narrating the steps. Then she asked, "Did u wanna try?" Sure! So I did it. She pointed out little ways to perfect the art of bow making, and soon a crowd gathered around us. Wow... I just learned how to make a bow! Imagine all the money I'm gonna save for years down the road?? The party was a hit and everyone loved, I mean LOVED their favor necklaces! It wasn't just the fact that Kelly was able to help me grab what I needed, but that she took the time to demonstrate it AND allowed me to have a go to ensure it would turn out right. I've been going to Ben Franklin the last couple of weeks to make this Valentines project for my husband. I thought it would be really special if I had my daughter make something for him. So I looked on Pinterest for some ideas. I found this one idea that didn't seem so difficult. It was a finger print magnet. So my daughter makes two adjoining thumbprints on a card stock to make a heart. Then I just glued a glass bead and magnet. I got everything from Ben Franklin. I got the finger print pads, glass beads, magnets, and card stock. I was able to find everything on my own except the finger print pads. I asked one of the workers and she found it for me right away. I finished the magnets in no time. It looked really good. So then I decided to be more gung ho. Same idea but I was gonna try to make it into keychains instead. I needed to go back to Ben Franklin and get a few different things like a keychain holder, and the holder/frame for the keychain. They didn't have the size I needed for the glass gems since I wanted to try it with a square one. I was just walking around the store thinking what else I could do. I asked one of the workers and she was very helpful. I explained what I was trying to make and she told me exactly what would work. Instead of the beads she told me to buy resin and it would look the same. I've never used resin before. They have really good customer service here and they seemed very experienced in their own craft projects. I'm grateful that she was able to help me. read more

I love this Ben Franklin location because the store is very easy to navigate. The workers always ask if I need any help and most times I can find what I'm looking for (although the prices can be a little high sometimes). My only gripe is that the cashiers can be a little slow sometimes. On my most recent visit, there were two workers at the cashier, and after a customer was done with her transaction, instead of calling the next person in line, one of the cashiers just talked with her coworker for the entire time. There were about four people behind me when the other cashier lady called me, and even after I was done with my transaction the first lady hadn't rung up a new customer yet. Overall however, my experiences at this Ben Franklin are always very positive. read more

I am not crafty. Having said that I come to Ben Franklin and they are wonderful. I started with knitting and the people here are knowledgeable and kind. Today I came to make an apron for my precious grand daughter. Again, I am not artistic at all. Thank goodness for Andrea! She so very patiently guided me to where aprons are kept and walked me through the entire process. Seriously, she had to be reallly patient. She showed me the iron in letters, nope. Then explained the accucut machine. Wow! Now I'm gonna make my little one her very own apron...ha ha. I'll post results later. Could not have done it without Andrea! read more

My post is a little late because I've been busy but I definitely wanted to give recognition where it's due. The Ben Franklin Crafts team in Market City is always helpful when I come to shop for a replenishment of supplies, or needed supplies for an upcoming artsy project. I recently had a birthday celebration for two different kids on the same day and needed to make some snazzy gift boxes to put their gifts in. With Natasha's help, she was able to help me find the items I needed in finishing these gift boxes. I really appreciated that she took the time to hear what I was putting together and being there to talk to in ensuring I had what I needed to finish it. I did find myself coming back a few times realizing I personally missed some items for the finer details, or I ran out of something I thought I had stocked up on in my craft supplies at home. Tho they're now a mainland owned, they still have the feel of a small local company. This is a good thing. For crafters or even people wanting that hard to find crafting item, they have it all. The place is packed with all kinds of stuff you need or don't even know you need. Tools, supplies, and even suggestions and help. They also have a membership type club you can join to give you discounts on purchases which is worth it if your going to make them a regular shopping spot.
