This place is a treasure. It's filled with historical architectural goods. These foods have been rescued from old houses and are no longer being manufactured. If you are lucky enough to find what.you need here - get it! The owner is super helpful and very knowledgeable on what he has and what you need. I didn't see many prices, but in my opinion my purchase was quite reasonable. They have lots to choose from and they have a downstairs and an outdoor selection. I was visiting Baltimore and came here with a friend who was looking for an antique dining table. First off Housewerks is located in a really beautiful, decrepit building with a sense of past grandeur. It was quite an experience walking around and looking at the various pieces of past furniture and things. Most needed to be refurbished. And like other reviews have said, it was expensive especially since you would need to do the refurbishing yourself. Also, it was kind of dirty. Outside in the perimeter there were various junk laying around- marble, status busts, a Coca Cola sign, etc. lots of cool things. I wish I was talented to refurbish. even if you aren't sure you would buy anything here, I recommend swinging by. It truly is a gem in the sense of the historic building it is in and the cool things in there. As a side note, I was torn between a 3 and 4 star rating. I chose 4 because this is a really is a gem - how often do you find a place of vintage housewares and materials inside a beautiful old building. read more

Have wanted to get down here for a long time, and finally had a reason to visit. Great space, with lots of cool stuff to look at. Unfortunately, they didn't have a lot of usable/practical items for our remodeling project. Mostly big furniture and nifty "conversation pieces". The staff was great - very helpfully pointed us in the direction of second chance just down the street - which did indeed have the kind of "reusable" stair materials we were looking for. This is a great place for unique vintage industrial finds. Ben who was working there at that time was super friendly and knowledgeable. This is not a place to go through "junk" to find a diamond, all of the items are already very unique and carefully selected. Ben can also work with you on customizing the pieces. We purchased 3 pendant lights from 1940s and this will be now a discussion piece in my new house. I will be coming back for many pieces for my own remodeling endeavors and my clients with good tastes! read more

I love this place. If I was richer, I'd have so much cool stuff from this store I'd probably be considered "eccentric." It is better than going to a museum--great stuff, and you can take something home. I'd make it a first stop if you are redecorating or renovating, indoors our out. Houswerks isn't your usual home salvage place. It's just a little different. I felt like there was a lot of variety that I hadn't seen at other salvage places. Maybe it's the full on boat in the back, but even from the outside I could tell it was going to be good. Made even better by the actual building itself I felt like I could come every week and find something unusual. The prices were very reasonable also. I definitely will stop by the next time I'm in Baltimore. read more

Cool stuff here. Don't expect everything to be completely restored and waiting for you to buy and display in your home the next day. A lot of the stuff needs "work" aka customization whether it be mechanical overhauls, painting, powder coating before you can officially make it your own to display. None the less it's cool to poke in here once in a while or request something vintage if you have something already in mind. read more

Lots of good pieces. I've found the proprietor really helpful and friendly. I like the vibe and have bought lots of pieces. You have to have a creative eye. Much of their stock needs some work, but they can do that work onsite before you pick up. This place isn't for everyone, but creative minds can come up with some great options here. read more

They have a great collection of goods, but are very selective as to what they will sell. I ws there and almost every thing I had asked a price for, they asked me "What are you using it for?" as if they wanted to jack up the price. The guy who runs this place is a hack. Each and every time I've been and have inquired about items they have always been overly priced. I gave this place one last chance hoping that they would have an item I needed for a home project. Found what I needed, and asked for a price from the overaged hipster (it's 80 degrees out today, you can stop wearing that silly beanie) and shockingly, he wouldn't sell it. Asked about another item, wouldn't sell it either. I felt confused because I specifically remembered him telling me that everything on the property was for sale, obviously it isn't true. So if you feel like wasting time or money, I would definitely recommend doing so here. read more

This spot is a GEM -- nothing like it exists in DC, that's for sure. We bought an amazing industrial table circa1900 that serves as our dining room table and has received dozens of compliments. We also have one of their light fixtures that Restoration Hardware makes huge wads of cash off of reproducing. The owners are very knowledgeable and ready to make suggestions/modifications etc. A wonderful place to check out if you're renovating or looking for a statement piece. read more

We (used to) love this place! Whenever we took a trip to Baltimore, we would stop in and look around. This time we were actually in the mood to buy and we really wanted to. So we walk in to find that there is a thick layer of dust on everything in the store. Not the kind of dust that makes the place feel authentically rustic. I mean the kind of dust that makes one wonder if anyone cares about this place anymore. So our children found some cast aluminum letters and when we went to buy them, the guy sitting behind the counter over charged us. I didn't bother saying anything because I wasn't in the mood to ask him to get up off his chair to show him the price that was sitting on the table by the door. I also wasn't interested in haggling about $5. On our way out, we saw a cool piece, a steel machine part that we admired. So I went back in to ask about it. He came outside and took a look at it, and asked me why I wanted it. This made me feel uncomfortable, because that is not his business, right? Is he going to base the price on why I want it? So, anyway he called his boss who told him that it wasn't for sale because he was keeping it for himself! Really? read more

This was our second time here. The first time, about a year ago, it was great and we found some cool stuff. This time, we found some perfect glass globes for our old bathroom sconces and just as we were about to turn around and purchase them were told that the whole area was off limits and nothing was for sale . They evidently used the area we were in for parts.There was no sign indicating this and the wooden gate was open when we got there. The globes were nothing fancy and there were 4 of them. We only wanted two. I left very angry and annoyed. I won't be back. read more
