When I am looking for something new for my home, I really like that feeling when I first walk through the door, that the place is filled with lots of options and all seem like they could make my life more interesting. Now that I am married, an item needs to pass both my criteria AND my wife's, but even that wasn't a problem at Houseworks! As we explored the showroom, we were greeted by the staff and offered help if we needed anything, otherwise, we were free to browse. My wife was simply looking for a table lamp (which she found) and also a floor lamp. She had in mind what she wanted and while she worked with the salesman to find it, I browsed what seemed like an art museum of wonderful furniture and fixtures and decor. If I wanted to have the coolest den or man cave, there were tables that used gears for expanding or drop leaves that could save room. Artistic pieces adorned the walls and side tables too. My wife tried some of the chairs around the multiple tables set up for dining rooms and if she may start prompting me to go along with getting some. She liked that they were more than simply functional for eating, but that they could easily adapt to becoming more relaxing allowing the person seated there to lean back. Honestly, if all shopping was this much fun, I would go more often! Now understand these aren't mass produced (ie poor quality) pieces. But if you are shopping for furniture on the north side of town, I assume you already know that it can get expensive. As long as the quality is there, I don't mind. I have a feeling that some more shopping is in our near future. I have a feeling that Houseworks will be seeing us again soon! Review #3847 read more

I want to live in this store. Seriously. We have been in the store several times throughout the years. In the beginning, it was perusing and wishing we had the money to buy even just one coveted item. We finally made our first purchase from Houseworks around 5 years ago. I have posted a picture of the couch and side table. When I say that I am obsessed with those items, I am not kidding you one bit. That couch and end table are two of three non-negotiable items in my life. My husband negotiated a price we were happ(ier) with and Dustin was a pleasure to deal with. I even just called a few weeks ago to find out how much I paid for the couch because I am moving soon, and it will be insured by the company. Dustin answered the phone and immediately emailed a copy of my receipt to me. Fast forward to the past few weeks. Since we are moving, we need some new furniture. My husband took me to look around Houseworks, but probably only peruse, because of their prices. We were delighted to find that they are carrying some new brands in their new (larger) location AND they are a bit more affordable. We went back a couple of times and were pleasantly greeted each time. When we went back to actually purchase, they said hello when we walked in, but I was a little less pleased with the lack of attention we got on the sales floor. We basically had to ask for it. I guess our salesman didn't recognize us. We already knew most of what we wanted, but needed to narrow down to color selections. Regardless, there is on other place that carries the items and the staff is usually super, so I will give them a pass this time. I can't wait to get my new furniture! read more

I was surprised to find that this store was locally owned. I could swear something so big--4,000 square feet? Maybe 5,000?--dedicated to modern furniture had to be a chain. It's not. Nowhere else in Indianapolis can you find so many housewares that look straight out of a Dali painting--especially the silver, kidney shaped bar I covet. They also have an impressive array of designer chairs cubbyholed by the dining room tables. They kind of look like a "rejected chair" factory, if you take that stance on three-legged avant-garde stools. You'll also find 3-D "pebble" rugs made of recyclable materials, all kinds of clocks here, lighting, designer loveseats, flat screens, and paintings and other art installations. Most things here are out of my price range, but sometimes they have sales. And I was a bit surprised to find a metal photo tree thingie made by Umbra. Don't they sell that brand at Target? As a museum of modern living where you can buy any and all of the items inside the museum, this place is 4-5 stars. If you ignore the prices, the items here are very cool. And if you fall in love with something you can buy it. This place does not and cannot compete directly with Ikea, price-wise. As a furniture store, this place is probably 2-3 stars. The prices on most of the items are just out of this world. For example, the white plastic chair in the photo I uploaded for $450. I think Walmart sells a variation of it for approximately $10. It's too easy to get sticker shock with places like this and be indignant. No one forces you to buy anything from here. If nothing else, go here and get some great ideas for your living space. read more

Tessi graciously greeted me as I arrived at a store which is new & feels like the best place in Indiana to enjoy the comfort of a Gamma sofa, fashioned in Italy which transported me to feeling as if I'm in a penthouse or posh palace when lounging in the leather sofa which furnished fabulous support & weightlessness simultaneously. Tessi spoke of aspects I'd not considered when selecting a gorgeous velvety ultra suede fabric ...her ideas & information galvanized me into realizing I need not shop anywhere but there! The showroom is beautifully arranged with inviting groupings to consider for my home & those of friends & family. Everyone ought to experience the sofa that met my every need & want... Worst customer service and follow up imaginable. They live by the moto "all sales are final". After taking 6 weeks to deliver a sectional couch that was supposed to take 2 weeks the delivery guys couldn't figure out how to assemble it correctly. The gaps between the pieces were strategically disguised on display with pillows and blankets. To top it off you can't kick out all the legs at the same time. Good luck calling and getting any help, your on your own once you sign on the dotted line. Never again! read more

This place has the worst customer service ever!!! In a day and age when you can buy most anything online with free shipping for the same price as in the store, the only reason to shop through a store is to support the business or to receive better customer service. We spent more than $2000 on ceiling fans and were assured that we would not need a special slope adjuster for our ceiling. After spending $40/day for the equipment to reach the ceiling plus contractor time to install the fan, we discovered that we indeed needed the slope adjuster. This meant that we either had to rush order the part for almost $100 to get next day delivery, or maintain the equipment at $40/day until the part arrived, or return everything and set everything up again when the correct part was available. I understand that in the end, despite the sales representative's advice to us not purchase the slope adjuster, that it was our responsibility to check the angle of our ceilings. What I don't understand, is why the manager of the store had to be rude to us, blame me and suggest that it was all my fault, and not even apologize for the miscommunication or misleading information! It's one thing to not be able to offer any compensation or help pay for the extra costs, and it's another thing to be an absolute jerk about it. We really liked the style of the furniture and the items in the store and had been considering getting their designers to come out to our house to help us furnish and decorate it. We would potentially have spent thousands of dollars at this store...but NO LONGER!!! Terrible, terrible, service and attitude. We will not be returning. read more

$459 for a desk that looks cheap, is not much more than a table, you assemble yourself and only comes with a lockable drawer and file cabinet assembly. Hmmm. I could find something a lot more sturdy, in the color I want, in stock, with all the accessories, for less than half at IKEA. Customer service was fine, but you would have to be good to sell me this bill of goods. read more

This place is hands down my favorite furniture store in Indiana. When me and my family moved into our new home we found Houseworks and we ended up buying 80% of our furniture from them. It may be a little expensive but it is worth it. Everything is high quality and lasts for quite awhile. We bought a white leather couch and it has withstood my family and our crazy life's. It looks good as new. If you are looking for modern furniture for a pretty good price house works is your place. Also make sure to check out their upstairs area which has lots of different office and bedroom furniture. This place is truly the coolest modern furniture store in all of Indianapolis. read more

I love all the comments and " I could have bought at ikea" slams, this store is high end modern/ contemporary furniture at a reasonable price. I have purchased a sofa, which was ordered. It came on time & is great quality. It is all made in the USA! I have purchased 6 dinning room chairs that where also ordered. There where 4 that came in early & 2 of another color that came as scheduled. I have purchased 3 lamps; 2 off the floor & 1 ordered. The ordered one came in early & was delivered & set up. All the item's are great quality. (Each item purchased has warranty/s included) The item's where delivery & set up for a small fee. I really like this store. I am an interior design student and an avid decorator. I just redid my bedroom, bathroom and living room this year, so I know a little about who has what. There is nowhere in Indy that I know of that you can find classy contemporary furniture all under one roof. I saw a post that their furniture is chintzy; that has not been my experience. And they are willing to deal. I got an extraordinary low-profile espresso media center with a linear fireplace that has a heater for $1200 and I think the tag was $4,000, all because they wanted to move it off the floor. Some salespeople are more willing to dicker than others, so pick your people. I have dealt with Brad and while I'm told he has just begun there, he is willing to go the extra mile to see how to minimize cost while maximizing satisfaction. The only reason I didn't give a five-star is because I don't think the left arm knows what the right arm is doing, but other than that, it's a very pleasant buying experience. read more

Went to Houseworks this weekend to purchase some office furniture..okay $4500.00 of office furniture. Its labor day and they have a Sale Sale Sale banner in the window. After the 'Sales person" was unable to offer any type of discount on the purchase we asked to talk with the manager... They guy basically said take or leave it, and you need to pay for assembly and delivery. $100.00 for delivery 10 miles away? I explained I though I was in a furniture store not IKEA, and asked that they comp the delivery. He walked away to assist other customers, never gave a final answer. The manager and sales people stood at the sales counter and let us walk out with out even acknowledging us on our departure. I guess business is so good they can let $4.5K walk out the door. What a wonderful store!!!! After 3 months of shopping for living room furniture, my husband and I stopped here to look at a specific line of American-made furniture (Younger) assuming that it would be too far out of our price range. However, we found that the price of the furniture we LOVED at Houseworks cost less than furniture we only "liked" at other stores. We loved how we were welcomed - it felt like a visit to a good friend's house. We greatly appreciated how we were treated - no pressure, very helpful, kind and hospitable employees. We were amazed at the level of respect we received - even with 5 kids in tow. (Remember, we had visited MANY stores with kids!) And in the end, we were able to buy all American-made modern pieces that we LOVE so much, we had a blast choosing beautiful fabrics and all within our budget!! I love how this store isn't a never-ending warehouse of every style that ever existed, but a showroom with lots of personal attention and character. Sure, there are expensive pieces (which are so fun to sit on) and we won't be buying $$$ pillows, but even on a budget, this store is NOT to be ignored! I recommend this store above all the others we visited for the staff's superb knowledge of their products, for their honesty, humility and treatment of the customer - no pretentious glares here!!!
