From here you can ride to the Menil or around St. Thomas (check out the medieval labyrinth over by the Chapel of St. Basil) or you can hoof it to Rice University and the bike station at Hermann Park. You can also get to the Museum District from here (there's a station by the MFAH that you can drop your bike off at) or get eats in Montrose (there's another station in the other direction right in front of Underbelly).

Houston B-Cycle is SO fun, easy and inexpensive…read more My wife and I enjoyed 24 hour access to bikes across the downtown area for only $5 (all tax and fees included) The catch is you only get a 60 minute session at a time, before having to return it to a location. But the plus side is you can literally return it to any of their locations for 1 second and then rent them again (as long as not all the bikes are rented at that location, and someone isn't waiting for a bike). If you go over the 60 minute session, It's 2 more bucks for an extra 30 minutes. Such a great addition to the area, and so much fun. Check them out next time you're in the area!

The colonnade is one of those things in Houston that people pass by all the time but don't really…read moretake a moment to appreciate. It is an interesting part of Houston history but we would never know it because there are no signs or labels of even its name. A little research had to be done to find it's significance. From 1922, the greco-roman columns graced the original Miller Outdoor Theatre. They were salvaged 1968 when the theatre was being redesigned and reformed in the Mecom-Rockwell Colonnade. In the center of the colonnade is a fountain. There is really nothing else to see on it's little section of grass sectioned off by Hermann, Fannin and San Jacinto. The best place to park for your stop off here is next to the Bloch Cancer Survivors Plaza across the street.

Stuck in stop-and-go traffic on the interstate, I was able to enjoy this park at 5 to 10 miles an…read morehour. A surprising little bright spot in an otherwise frustrating afternoon and affectionately nicknamed "Mount Rush Hour" (like Mount Rushmore but with traffic). The park has 18 foot tall busts of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Stephen F. Austin, and Sam Houston. (Yes, for you non-Texans, the cities of Austin and Houston are named after those last two.) The park is operated by Harris County and these artworks by sculptor David Adickes were added in 2012. He titles them, "A Tribute to American Statesmanship." Enjoy if you're going slow. Or if you want a better look, the park is open to the public but not directly accessible from the interstate. [Review 852 of 2024 - 607 in Texas - 21882 overall]

Mount Rush Hour! After passing this monument hundreds of times on the bottleneck of interstate 10…read moreand 45, commonly congested with heavy commuter traffic, I finally decided to venture over for a closer look (on my bike). To get there, travel down Houston Avenue and then turn off at Bingham Street going East and go all the way the end of the street. This street isn't perfectly straight so just pay attention to the street signs. The large concrete busts depict four historical figures including Stephen F. Austin, Sam Houston, Abraham Lincoln and George Washington. The structures sit on a tiny lot of land wedged between the neighborhood and the interstate with no parking lot or formal placard aside from a medium size metal sign that says "American Statesman Park". In reading a little history about this space, it's just a third of an acre and smallest of Harris County's nearly 190 parks. It was designed to be a point of visual interest, created by David Adickes, but not an actual park as there are no benches, parking spots, or even a trash can. Interesting!

Exploring my way through the Heights I was lucky enough to stumble upon this jogging trail. I kept…read morelooking at it as I was driving up and down the street not knowing what it was but seeing lots of cool things inside it. Then I finally saw this giant tree with pink flowers and I just had to pull over and check it out. The pictures I was able to snap of the bees turned out great! As far as the running trail it's an interesting concept. It's basically a a jogging trail that embedded into the islands between the 2 sides of the street with intermittant stops at each cross section. I couldn't honestly jog on this because at each intersection I would have to stop and that would totally screw up my rhythm but it's a great usage of space. Instead of having some junk in between road like they do everywhere else, the city actually made something useful and very beautiful.

Note to all who use this trail- Please clean up after…read moreyourself. It won't kill you to hang on to that cinnamon bun wrapper & diet coke can. There's a trash bin every 3-4 blocks- use it. I don't want to have to pull another used Kleenex out of my dogs mouth. Stop messing up our pretty trail :(

I've been coming here for three months now to go running. I go running only to keep in shape, and…read moreto clear my head. Here's what I like about these trails...you feel safe here. The trails are well used. Bikers, runners, and walkers alike are all welcome. Any day of the week you can use the path and be assured that you won't be the only one. The paths are flat and free of garbage. Here's what I don't like...dog poop and lack of bathrooms. The dog poop I blame on the dog owners. Come on people...just bring a baggie and pick up your dogs poop! Every couple of feet there are big dog turds just off the side of the path, and sometimes on the path. I like to go for long runs sometimes, but without bathrooms it is almost impossible. There are trees off the path, and if nature calls then I sometimes find myself having to make use of them. Enjoy this gem of a trail!

The old rail lines have finally been converted into bike/walk trails. The MKT trail starts in the…read moreHeights and ends up in downtown. In 2009, the bike trail would stop at the old wooden bridge. Now the trail is complete. I would give the trail 5 stars, but there is one issue. Roads that intersect the trail have the right-away. So becareful when you are biking at a fast pace.
