So Folks, after reading through these posts, I finally developed the courage to make a short post - regarding Houston Garden Centers. Yes. they've been around for years and have been very successful acquiring solid locations around Houston. They also have achieved significantly strong leverage with Wholesalers / Growers around the USA. Having spent many years purchasing from them, I'd like to help anyone who enjoys gardening as much as I do. Considerations: 1. Can they help you troubleshoot and resolve a broad spectrum of plant/lawn disease, pesticide, or fungal problem(s). Moreover, are they competent enough to prescribe a solution? 2. Plant ID / Genus / Subgenus - a Texas "Common Name" and planting tips; just be careful that you are confident with the advice. 3. Do your research. Identify your planting locations; for example, Full Sun vs. Full Shade - moist soil, types of soil, etc. 4. Lastly, learn plant maturity, age, and grade. Avoid a price per gallon, or pack. Example - a 5 gal. plant may not be as mature as a similar plant (by age and show) as a 1-3 gallon. Importantly - Plants, Turf, and Bedding Plants are grown / prorogated differently; think of plants like eggs; Grade A....Grade AAAA, etc. Local nurseries that offer warranty on plants are at the very least confident they are providing you the best purchase. Low grade, high volume, leveraged surplus plants that are discounted, etc. by inventory are often offered at a discount, but marketed at or below competitors. Consider your options and look at plant health, size and age/maturity; don't get distracted by blooms / growth / color, until you can understand age and survivability. If you know what you need and are willing to work hard to establish their products, then they are a good fit. If you are someone that want's to learn to become a "green thumb" then I'd recommend the local nursery's first. One last comment, essentially its all chemistry, but you can learn quite a bit more from a local nursery expert that employs an expert, such as a Texas Certified Nursery Professional, or TNLA, etc. Hope this helps you guys! read more

If you're so excited to landscape your yard that you wet your plants, then you may want to visit Houston Garden Center. It may be the most visible nursery in Houston: easily spotted from I-10 east of downtown. Take the first exit on the east side of Beltway 8 to get there the easiest. I saw it many times on visits to H-town, planning some additions to my yard, so I made it a point to stop in. Here's the note, though: It's a garden center, not a landscape center, not an outdoor living center. They sell plants, soil, and accessories, and that's all. No fountains, no sculptures, no furniture, no bricks, no watering equipment. Well, if they focus on plants, what plants do they have? Lots of azaleas. Shrubberies. Grass. Trees, including several different palms. Fruits, veggies, & herbs. A pleasant surprise was a section of loblolly pine, a native to TX's Piney Woods. Prices are in line with similar places. But some Yelpers have reported that Houston Garden Center has many sales, but sometimes doesn't honor the lower prices. I frequent this location every season and rarely have to communicate with the staff. Today was one of those rare days. I wasn't surprised at the lack of empowerment and customer service (there is a reason I try to avoid communication), but what I asked about seemed like a small request, so I wanted to share my experience. After selecting my 11 plants I passed an area that had 2 signs for 50% off on seeds. Not something I was there to purchase, but why not? When they rang up regular price I asked the nice cashier (Sealy/celia?) about the 50% off sign. She referred to the register stating "no, they aren't on sale". I showed her the 2 signs and she took one to the manager who she referred to as "Balthazar". She told me he said no. I thought surely if he'd see the sign and realized I only had 3 packages he wouldn't mind giving a discount of less than $2.50. We nicely asked again (a smile sometimes goes a long way), but he was adamant and said something about him coming back from vacation and he couldn't do it. I don't know what that had to do with anything, but I do know that his actions were a missed opportunity to deliver basic customer service by simply honoring what the store had advertised on-site and it would have cost the store less than $3!! It wasn't a big purchase, but it wasn't money that I was planning on spending, so I put them back. This is not a gripe letter. Just a customer comment to say sometimes it's okay to say "yes" to the small requests of customers, especially if it is plainly advertised in the store and it will cost you little to nothing. I still purchased my plants and I will return again because I love your selection. I want to add again, the cashier was really sweet and helpful. read more

It was terrible. There was no one there to speak English. Everyone does not speak Spanish. I work with the general public and no I don't expect everyone to speak English so I make sure I have translation services available to accommodate everyone no matter what language they speak. Everyone I approached only spoke Spanish and there wasn't a person available to provide service to me. Just ridiculous. read more

I love this location Houston Garden Center!! Not to far from my house!! I have a green thumb!! I love anything doing with planting!! I have a small garden plus my flowers I love to plant!!.. So I get my tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and green beans here. They have great trees from fruit to palm trees!.. Great deal on any variety dirt you need!! Very Professional employees and very knowledgeable in everything you need!! They like there job and very friendly! So yes I highly recommend this location Houston Garden Center!! I find it a shame that I cannot give Houston Garden Center, 3600 E. Beltway 8, Pasadena, Texas a "0-Star" rating. Around 1:45pm today, Sunday, May 30, 2023, an employee by the name of Victor Ortiz became very rude to the point of aggressive. My husband and I were told to drive to the back part of the lot, and someone would load 6 bags of top soil for us after we showed him our receipt. We did not see an attendant, although there was a white car parked which we thought belonged to a customer. As we drove around to find the bags of top soil ourselves, we found a gentleman who was trimming some trees, and he helped us find the person, Victor Ortiz, that was supposed to be helping us. I told the gentleman that we had found the bags right where we had stopped, but he didn't speak English...just motioned for us to drive around to where the white car was parked. Apparently, Victor Ortiz did not notice or care that a customer had been driving around twice looking for top soil bags as he was preoccupied in his car with his windows closed. When he finally came out, he motioned for us to back up, but I got out of the car to show him that we had found the bags and where they were...just a few feet away. He became irate and nastily told me that he knows where they are...not me! He then accused me of "starting something" and became aggressive in his attitude. He showed us a different stack of bags that were also top soil, but then added, "Lady, what does that bag say. Can you read it?" He refused to load the bags and walked back to his white car. As he walked off, I told him he lacked customer service skills and asked his name, at which point he turned round and aggressively walked back towards us and said his name was "Victor, Victor Ortiz," and he didn't care if we reported him because he knew what "kind of people" we were. Soon after, as my husband was loading our bags of top soil, Victor Ortiz walked by us with another customer. My husband asked him if he wanted to see our receipt and help load the bags. He replied with a dismissive wave of his hand and walked right past us. My husband then said "thanks for helping" to which he flipped the middle finger of both of his hands at us and then called me a "Bitch" in a very loud voice. I've never encountered such behavior at this location in the many, many years that I have purchased plants and all our garden products. I will never return!! This location needs to have English speaking employees and properly vet them. Had I met Victor Ortiz under different circumstances and a different location, I would be very fearful of his spontaneous "in your face " aggressive attitude, and I believe I would be in grave danger. read more

My company donates Christmas trees during the holiday season. The staff and service is beyond pathetic at this location. I've been buying Christmas trees throughout the city at their other locations for the past couple of days and this is by far the worst experience I've had. The flowers and greenery are always quite affordable, and the staff is always quite helpful. The keep the plants well watered. However, this location is a bit difficult to get to as one has to exit the freeway then ride through a neighborhood that surrounds the center. It's usually quite convenient for me as I am able to pick up my plants on my way in or out of town. I really like it; however, if you're looking for gardening tips and suggestions, I don't know that this location will service such needs... read more

Asked what they did to plants that were dying if they would donate them to a daycare to recycle and revive and he said they had insurance and they didn't like donating to anyone not even discounting they would rather throw them away since insurance covers it ! Saw a huge sign off the road "CHRISTMAS TREES $39" Wanted to get a tree the next day, tried calling multiple times (and multiple locations) to verify that they actually had trees before we made the drive. No answer. Made the drive because we believed the sign - mistake. No Christmas tree, not for another week and a half ... For years I've seen their advertisements on tv...being that we don't know much about plants we decided to take the one hour drive thinking that someone there could help us decide what we need....well we were wrong....we asked the sales associate for help and she responded by telling us that none of the people that work there actually knows anything about plants....Kim Hooper you need to train your people to know a little something about the product they are selling or to at least act like they know what they are doing! read more

My wife & I are both 80 yrs old and handicapped. We just recently completed our new home and went to your East Freeway location with the intention of buying several hundred dollars worth of plants. when we arrived I ask the attendant where the flats were located. He said and I quote, They are out in the parking area. Instead of offering to get 1 for us, I had to go to the area and get my own. Then we were trying to decide which plants would be best for our particular application, I ask again for assistance. The cashier once again said he couldn't help us and to ask the manager. Upon locating the manager, he could offer no help. There was an older gentleman there who seemed to know about plants heights etc, and did help some. Overall, our experience was horrible. We finally purchased about $35.00 worth of plants and left. It is not my intention to ever return. Your business is suffering greatly from inept staff who has zero knowledge of your business.
