Quick and convenient ice cream stand. Lots of rules listed on the window. People come from all over for this ice cream. Soft serve is the same everywhere for me. The flavors didn't overwhelm me. I could come back, but I don't have to.

Best kept secret in Ft. Washington, MD. This is a cash only store specializing in homemade ice cream. They offer vanilla and chocolate flavor but also have a variety of sundaes and banana split or floats. Quick service and always a line specially when it is hot only. This store is only open in the summer so go and get your ice cream!!!

There is a staple ice cream spot in Ft. Washington M.D. that I've passed by for YEARS!! I don't know why I never stopped. Well today...I changed that!! I'm super late, I know, but LET'S GO!! . Where I am: Hovermales (no social media presence, or website) . Location Reviewed: 9011 Livingston Rd., Ft. Washington M.D. . Menu Includes: Soft Serve Ice Cream, Shakes, Malts, Floats, Sundaes, Halfsmoke sausages, & hot dogs. *CASH ONLY* . Items Reviewed: Their Dipped Cone (soft serve vanilla ice cream dipped in chocolate, one size $3.16). STAMP!! You can't deny this cone on a hot day!! Their Upside Down Banana Split (soft serve vanilla ice cream with strawberries, pineapples, bananas, cream, & chocolate drizzle $7.31). STAMP!! When you get your the bottom of this cup...everything is there!! Their Halfsmoke (with mustard, & onions $4.20). DELICIOUS. A nice snap on this sausage with classic toppings. Their Root Beer Float (soft serve vanilla ice cream floating in root beer $6.13). DELICIOUS. The soda was a tad bit flat, & the ice cream didn't melt after a 45 min ride home!! . Truly, a local gem! Open seasonally from around Memorial Day to the end of summer, Hovermale's Tastes Best is a small soft-serve ice cream stand just off the highway in Fort Washington, Maryland. Cash-only, there's a small parking lot. Order from a takeout window and in return you get a generous portion of soft-serve ice cream in vanilla, chocolate or swirl. They also sell milkshakes, floats, etc. The soft-serve is very good and worth a drive!

Stopped by Hovermale's for some soft serve as I was in the area and found it to be just okay. Cash only and they offer three sizes in a cone. I thought the small was a good size, so I can't even imagine what the large would look like! I found the swirl to be similar in flavor and couldn't tell the difference between the chocolate and vanilla. In additional to soft serve in a cone, you can get it as a sundae or shake. They also serve "sandwiches" (hot dogs, chili dogs, cheese dogs, half smokes, and BBQ), as well as soft drinks. Be sure not to come on a Monday or after 8pm as they'll be closed.

Let's go back to the 1970's when we were young children. The simpler times of life. This place is it, this small place (CASH ONLY) is a true Landmark and go back down memory lane. The food, especially the ice cream is Top Notch, upside down *Banana Split*! The dogs are good also. The ice cream is so good BUT, it ain't sweet. Nothing but, good old fashioned ice cream. The service is great and this is service with a smile. It's a small place so, if you drive to fast you will miss it. It's across from the Shell station. The people who come are even nice. No one acting crazy which is another positive thing. Fresh clean air to breathe.

Hovermale's Tastes Best is insanely yummy! One of my cherished summer traditions. Love the chocolate malts!

I agree with the person that indicated the ice cream was just okay. There wasn't any unique about it and it seems like many people come here for that nostalgic feel from when they were growing up. The prices are reasonable but when I thought about it, $5 for a large cone, I could have just bought a tub of ice cream from the store. I thought they would have toppings for the cone but from what I gather they don't have sprinkles so that was a bit of a let down. I do think the parking lot and the lawn area are great for hanging out while you eat your treats. It seems like instead of toppings they are most famous or their dipped cones and banana splits. I just wanted to try the ice cream in its basic form. It kind of tasted like a whipped custard or something whipped. It tasted like that yellowish ice cream you get in the store that comes in 5 gallon tubs, only more air was whipped into it. This place does give off the old ice cream shoppe type feel and I was glad to have been able to try the ice cream but it didn't blow my mind though.

I've eaten at plenty of delis over the years, but Eddie's Little Shop completely surprised me with flavors I've genuinely never tasted before. The sandwiches here are incredibly unique, creative combinations that just explode with flavor in ways I wasn't expecting. What really stood out were the huge, fresh chunks of real mozzarella, paired with their homemade-style dressings, sauces, and condiments. It's easily one of the best sandwiches I've ever had, and I've tried a lot. The portions are generous, the bread is spot-on. I'll definitely be back before my trip ends. If you're in Arlington, do not miss Eddie's Little Shop Deli. Highly, highly recommended!

Saturday, midafternoon, I stop by for an Eddie Mootz ($17) (salami, ham, sopressata, mozzarella, on seeded italian). I'm handed this brown paper bag that weighs, I dunno, 3 lbs? I have to carry this back with me to the Metro. Twice along the way, I have to stop and catch my breath. I get home, my kitchen counter sags a bit where I put the bag down. Cripes, Eddie's. And the sandwich itself? 2 meals, easily. Thick thick piles of meat and a shovel-full of mozzarella. Very chewy bread. I work up a sweat just eating this, there's so much labor involved. I ordered online from the Metro, around the DCA stop, and got a notification it was ready before I got to the King Street stop. Fast turnaround. Eddie's is now on my list of places to make a point of going to for sandwiches in the DMV. Really good sandwich, and a lot of it.

Like many businesses in National Harbor, Mason's is a chain. They have several locations across the US and a few locations in...Italy? That was a curveball I wasn't expecting. Anyway, it was lunchtime when we entered but fortunately not too crowded so we were able to grab a table. It's not a large space - there's ~4 tables inside as well as some stools, plus more tables outside. The menu is mostly rolls - lobster rolls of course, but they also have shrimp and crab with various accents. Most of the rolls are offered Connecticut style (warm with butter) or traditional (cold with mayo). They also have a few sides and salads. I noticed they had a lunch special, which came with a roll of my choice plus a drink and side. I can take or leave lobster - but the crab roll was speaking to me so I went with that, Connecticut style. The roll itself was good - a balanced portion of crab that had good flavor and tasted fresh. The bun was toasted ever so slightly, and held all the crab meat well. I had a bag of potato chips for my side which were...chips, yes. Service was fine, and overall I had good experience at Mason's. Is it the epitome of lobster rolls? No, but if you're craving them in the area then this fits the bill.

Capo Italian Deli - Old Town Alexandria…read more I reviewed our new Old Town neighbor - Capo Italian Deli - early in 2026. Time for an update. The deli is outstanding. Taking up a tiny footprint on the N. Washington Avenue thoroughfare, a few seconds from King Street, the deli delivers both hot and cold deli entrees, soft drinks, and salads. There's maybe half a dozen tables inside and a couple of tables outside, but from what I have seen thus far, most of the trade is with carry-out service, drawing from the excellent reputation Capo brought with it as it arrived in Old Town (the restaurant has siblings in Shaw NW, and Western Market in the District, Tyson's Corner in Vienna, VA, Annapolis and Potomac, MD). Fresh Philly rolls for those seeking a traditional hero sandwich, with go-to seasonings and all of the essential protein groups. My favorite is a large half roast beef half turkey with lettuce, tomato, and mayo (I skip the Italian dressing, which is part of the default, and I skip the cheese). I can and have made this $18 sandwich last three meals (so I ask them to cut the sandwich into three pieces), and the ingredients stay fresh for the next 24 hours. The last time I did this the sandwich fed me from 4:45 a.m. to 9 p.m., as I served as an election officer at one of Alexandria's polling places. Neat, trim, and completely satisfying. Just a point of concern: given its location, the opportunity to double-park while picking up an order seems to be just too tempting. This location, however, cannot over the long term sustain double-parkers. The deli is about 100 feet from the intersection of King Street and N. Washington Street. There is a dedicated lane for cars seeking to park adjacent to the deli. And then there are two northbound lanes on N. Washington Street. That's it - just two lanes serving one of the busiest intersections in Old Town. If a delivery-service car pulls up alongside one of the parked cars, all hell will break loose by drivers who suddenly find a delivery vehicle double-parking in front of Capo, leaving but one northbound lane open for however long it takes for the delivery agent to gather the order and beat it out of there. This happens with remarkable frequency, starting at about 11 a.m. and running throughout the day. That's not going to make good neighbors of Capo's nearby shops. Alexandria Parking has its work cut out for it, but here the rule prohibiting double-parking has to be enforced - it's both a safety issue and an issue of common courtesy. Doesn't matter if you think you'll just be in and out of the deli in seconds. We know it doesn't work that way, not always, and here - not even often. More often than not the double-parker will be creating a traffic hazard just by parking alongside a parked car in front of the deli. Please, don't do this.

This review is based solely on the customer service I received over the phone…read more I had placed a $62 order through DoorDash and chose Capo even though there are plenty of other deli spots nearby, because they normally make really good sandwiches. Unfortunately, the customer service this time was extremely disappointing. I called with a simple question about the bread since I have braces and needed something soft. The person who answered the phone was rude and dismissive, acting as if my call was an inconvenience. When I asked which bread was the softest, he cut me off to say they were "super busy" and could only change the bread on one sandwich, not both. I asked again for clarification, and he continued sounding irritated and uninterested in helping. He repeated that they had a line of people and needed to know which one sandwich I wanted to change. For the amount I paid, the lack of basic courtesy and willingness to answer a straightforward question was unacceptable. This will be my last time ordering from Capo in Alexandria, VA.

"Grandparents Recovery Mode Activated... and Succotash Delivered."…read more July 28, 2026 -- the granddaughters had just left, the house was quiet, and I knew exactly what we needed: a grandparents recovery dinner. Something with great food, great drinks, and great ambiance. After checking a few places, Succotash at National Harbor fit the bill perfectly -- close, reliable, and unforgettable on our last visit. I told Tiffany to dress sexy and comfortable because we were going somewhere special. She immediately activated her detective mode -- no training, just natural talent -- asking me the same question in ten different ways trying to crack the surprise. But when we pulled up to Succotash, her eyes said everything:I did good. The Welcome Inside, we were greeted by Ellis, who had the kind of warm, inviting smile that makes you feel like you're walking into a friend's home. She asked if it was a special occasion, and I proudly said,"Yes -- I'm taking this beautiful woman out for date night." Ellis promised us a great table. The first one wasn't our vibe, and she happily moved us to one we loved. That's hospitality done right. Then Chen V., our waitress, arrived with great energy, menu suggestions, and the confidence of someone who knows the food is going to blow your mind. Starters & Drinks We began with the All the Bites platter: Deviled eggs (three kinds!) Crispy Korean Cauliflower Fried pickles As Chen walked away, I read the description for Jamie's Cornbread with hot honey-brown butter and immediately called her back. My mouth was already watering. The Entrées Tiffany ordered Shrimp & Grits, her forever favorite.I ordered Crispy Blue Catfish with Collard Greens, my forever favorite. The starters arrived with five‑star presentation -- and the taste matched it.We both agreed: All the Bites and the Cornbread were outstanding. Tiffany's Shrimp & Grits came out beautifully. She loved it -- shrimp cooked perfectly -- though she could've used a little more seasoning. My catfish?Outstanding.Crispy, flavorful, beautifully plated. The collard greens cooked with smoked turkey were perfect. And what I thought was thinly sliced lettuce turned out to be one of the best slaws/coleslaws I've ever had. The Cornbread That Stole the Show The cornbread with hot honey-brown butter melted in my mouth like it had been waiting its whole life for this moment.Sweet, buttery, warm -- the kind of cornbread that makes you close your eyes and rethink your priorities. Succotash was hitting every note. ‍ A Visit from the Manager The manager -- they called him AB -- stopped by to check on us.Great touch.Great timing.Great service. Dessert Drama Everyone knows I'm a dessert guy.I studied the menu like it was a final exam and chose the Chocolate Bourbon Pecan Pie, with Chen backing me up on adding vanilla ice cream. She packed our leftovers and brought the pie.It looked scrumptious...But to my horror, it wasn't warm. Now, I didn't ask for it warm -- but when you add ice cream, you assume warmth is part of the deal.Cold pie + melting ice cream = dessert confusion. I still ate most of it (I'm dessert crazy), but it wasn't the ending I dreamed of. Final Verdict Even with the cold‑pie plot twist, the night was outstanding. The food, the staff, the ambiance -- everything was top‑tier.Succotash delivered a perfect surprise date night and a perfect grandparents recovery dinner. My timing was good, because I arrived right before a work group of maybe 10 people or so came into place their orders. Wearing an oil paint-smudged apron (FYI: the reality is that you're still going to get paint on your clothes even wearing an apron), I aptly ordered the Torpedo Artist. The Torpedo Artist is a hot Panini-like sandwich. You can select your type of meat, cheese and toppings. By default it includes lettuce, sweet peppers and deli oil. My sandwich was well-crafted with plenty of turkey and Swiss cheese. However, I didn't especially like this sandwich. I wish I had asked them to hold the deli oil because it was overly pungent with oregano. All I could taste in my sandwich was oregano. But older and wiser now, I know in the future that if I have them hold the deli oil, I'll end up with a great and tasty sandwich.

I loved that it was not oiled high with all the ingredients. A simple sandwich. It fit the bill and didn't over fill me. A true classic. The multi grain bread was the best! I need to find out where that is from. It was that good. I hope I'm able to try the tuna fish and the egg salad sandwiches sometime they look delish! The staff were quiet, but got the job done. There is a small bar like area to eat in, and outdoor tables in a covered area to enjoy your sandwich.

Service was fast, friendly and prompt as we were the only ones in there at the time. The chairs are a little uncomfortable for people with bigger hips and thighs, so next time we'll sit at the high top. Everything was well seasoned and good. The mild heat was perfect for me, but medium was too hot. My daughter got hot and I declined to try it. Surprisingly the smash burger was the best thing we had. The crimson onion was very good as well. We would return.
