The worse heath care I have ever experienced. The government funding is based on every HOWARD BROWN testing and treating STD.s at each location. However, each facility specializes in specialties. Testing and treatments that are not STD's If one goes to the Up Town facilities they will not test and treat for STDs at that location, They want one to go to the south side of Chicago for testing and treatment. I used to love this place because they catered to all demographics in the community and at one point provided free testing to at risk people. But now it isn't what it used to be. You call and ask if they test for HSV, and they say yes, but when you go in, they refuse to test for it saying it's against protocol, as if it isn't an STD. Some providers seem a little more judgmental than others. Though most of the staff is personable and kind, what they offer isn't as thorough as it once was. read more

I had a feeling something wasn't right about this place. It began when a staff member violated HIPAA regulations, which I addressed by calling and expressing my concerns. My son went in for a routine annual cleaning, but it never actually happened. Instead, they only took X-rays and told him that he would need to schedule another appointment just for the cleaning. The very next day, my son developed a sore throat. At first, we assumed it was minor and had him take over-the-counter medication, but his condition worsened each day. Now he has swollen glands and is on three different medications. He had no symptoms at all before his visit to Howard Brown Health. I sincerely hope that proper sterilization procedures are being followed before equipment is used on patients. read more

Communication is absolutely awful. I went to the BYC location for free HIV/STD testing and they told me I would receive results within 48 hours. After calling them every day the results were late, they proceeded to tell me 5-7 business days. If you want quick/rapid results, I would highly not recommend. It is incredibly unprofessional to make these kind of false promises. Otherwise, the workers were kind and listened to my concerns but this lack of communication really upset me. read more

I went here for an HRT consult at the Hyde Park location and it was not a good experience. I was misgendered and they used the wrong name right when I walked in so I kindly corrected the front desk staff and he changed my account to the correct name. Later on when I was called to a room, the nurse yelled my dead name and continued to misgender me throughout the visit. She also was not friendly or comforting at all. Instead of asking what hormone I wanted more information on, she guessed by looking at me. The one plus was the doctor I saw for the visit, Kenya Thomas, was very friendly and knowledgeable and answered my questions. I started coming to Howard Brown over a year ago. This is the worst health care provider ever. They cancel appointments and then try to rebook them weeks later. I am on medication that has to be administered every two months. I called to schedule my injections and was told I had to see a Drm first, fine. I made the appointment and they called to cancel and the next appointment was after my shot dates. They have totally messed this up even after calling me and telling me they would give me the shots and made an appointment. I show up and the nurse said she can't do it. I genuinel think that Howard Brown as a healthcare network is NOW completely divorced from its Mission Statement. It is not an easy access place for your testing and outreach. The amount of bureaucracy, appointment scheduling, people you need to see in order to get a simple routine screening - something they talk constantly about that you should do - is absolutely atrocious. When I told some woman who was gonna "go over charts" in order to give me a simple STD screening that I don't want an interview and "consulting", she told me I was giving her an attitude and was mean and if I wanted to I could have gone to many other places and not be at "this horrible place that ask a lot of questions" WTF ! You know they are all just another healthcare network with bad service and horrible intake practices , when you look at the building on Halsted and then experience service. Although Howard Brown is super LGBTQ+ friendly and welcoming, their doctors, scheduling, and patient services are very disappointing! The doctors are unavailable, overbooked and often just drop the ball or dismissive. Urgent medical concerns go unanswered and no one available to help you through navigating difficult health care needs. Messages and voicemails left unanswered. Scheduling and communication is very difficult. I found going to other hospitals St Joseph and Northwestern I receive much better care. I no longer can recommend or support Howard Brown. read more

I am new to the city for school, and one of my roommates recommended I go to Howard Brown to get started on PrEP. My plan for the day was to go in, get a health screening, and then get started on PrEP. But so much more happened. I was greeted by wonderful staff, and despite the many people waiting for service, I did not wait very long at all. I got an appointment for an hour later, and was able to go and enjoy lunch down the street. And upon coming back, I only waited about 15 minutes, and was then taken to the back by a wonderfully funny and lighthearted nurse. We connected so quickly and she made me feel comfortable right away. She walked me through everything, and helped calm my nerves. The doctor was amazing. She was so kind, knowledgeable and answered all my questions. She even recommended that I get the MPV since I am new to the city. I got the vaccine, and although I am experiencing some pretty shitty side effects, I am glad to help limit the spread. I typically have horrible luck when it comes to getting blood work. I have fainted before and I have stubborn veins, but the nurse that took my blood got it on the first try, and everything was so quick an easy. There was a Walgreens located in the building and although there was some conflict in terms of my insurance, I got my PrEP. I trust this place so much and will recommend it to everyone who is looking for affordable, amazing health care. read more

I made an appointment today at 1 o'clock of course I got there early, I checked in and now it's been an hour and a half I still haven't seen by someone. I understand that it's probably busy or this is understaffed but I mean come on. An appointment is an appointment what's the purpose of making an appointment if you're going to let your patient sit for awhile that's just absolutely ridiculous. These people are IMPOSSIBLE to deal with. Worse than the government. Worse than the Post Office. Worse than the IRS. I have gone in circles with them trying to arrange a simple vaccination - which their website says they provide. You get completely different answers depending on who answers your call or who you talk to onsite. One phone operator says to just walk in. So I walk in and then am told I need an appointment. So then I call and the very confused person first says I can walk in, then puts me on hold, comes back and says I need to arrange a new patient appointment, then get a blood test, then get the vaccine. Looks like they are trying to pad the bill and get more money. I gave up. Found out that Walgreens offers the vaccine I wanted - with no hassle. Online appointments, multiple more convenient locations. I pity anyone who has to deal with them for more complicated issues. I sure would not trust my health care with them. read more

Scammers. The provider was nice, but the administrative workers are not client focused at all and WILL incorrectly bill you. The provider I saw was in network, yet I was charged the full bill. I loved Howard Brown, I still love their doctors, nurses etc. But scheduling an appointment or asking a medical question and getting back a relevant answer has been nearly impossible. I reached out to a doctor I had seen for a medical issue that hadn't resolved with treatment. She's on vacation, so someone else replied with no new treatment, but suggesting I have other issues I clearly don't. At 40 I know very well how certain conditions present in the female body. Then I try to schedule an appointment through MyChart with a specific doctor. I request an appointment, wasn't able to pick a date or anything, but someone would get back to me. When they did, by message through the app, they just reminded me that I have an appointment next month w a different doctor that specializes in something else completely. Not even close. They didn't bother to read what I needed help with, or what that doc specializes in. Or check the schedule of the doctor I requested the appointment with. I didn't have an option to reply or clarify. Then I call the number. The new answering machine/robot asks you the same questions over and over, seemingly w the goal to hang up on you. The only way I got through was by saying representative over and over again. Then when I finally do, there are no appointments available, and I should call again tomorrow or something. WTF??? After going through this type of experiences a few times, I am now wondering if I go somewhere else entirely. I am angry and sad, bc I love the Clark location and it's staff... but this is untenable. read more

This use to be a great LGBTQ provider, however over the years this place has changed for the worse! The staff are rude, unprofessional and some are even seemingly racist (toward whites) and so not gay friendly. In my option the better providers all left during the pandemic and now it seems there are few to no good providers or staff left or there are so few that it's not noticeable. I have resisted posting a review until now. Sorry, Howard Brown, NO APOOGIES ACCEPTED. I am so tired of hearing "sorry" If you have to say sorry so many times - it's obvious something is not working in your organization. Situation 1: Got a MPOX vaccination there. They submitted the wrong information to the state which in turn blocked my access to my vaccination records - this is when we still needed to provide proof of vaccination for MPOX and COVID. I spent several months trying to resolve the issue and spent about 40 hours doing so. I visited 4x to discuss talked to numerous people including supervisors, etc. Everyone said 'Sorry" but no one fixed it or took responsibility to get it fixed. Meanwhile, I could not access my records and no one at Howard Brown cared. Situation 2: Tried going to walk in clinic. Was told no one could see me that day. Completed paperwork etc. Was told to come back next day. Went back next day and was told the same thing. Both times, I arrived right after opening in the morning. I asked if I could call to inquire instead of traveling there everyday to check - was told no - you have to come in to ask. So, while I am sick, I should travel there every morning to ask because I can't get a regular appointment for 6 weeks. Then I was told to try going to the resale shop for assistance - WTF - why would I go to the resale shop to try to get medical assistance. read more

I went here a couple months ago to get tested and it was a very seamless transition between kiosk, the waiting area and being seen. The kiosk person was very friendly and fast. I will say I did not the bedside manner of the nurse who did my blood work, they were the least favorite part of the visit. Very cold and a little aggressive in their mannerisms. I would go back for other services and would prefer to not be seen by them if possible. read more
