BED BUGS September 2025 I left within 5 hours of being there and the receptionist moved my room from room 140 to 138 BOTH room were infested!! She lied to me about the manager having to initiate a refund, she lied to me about the manager being there the next day to resolve this issue because I called the next day to which the person then told me that he would be present the following day another lie. Finally on the third day the woman said she initiated the full refund. I have yet to receive my refund. I have filed a formal complaint to the State Health Department and I am waiting to file a lawsuit with the town of Saugerties. This business should be shut down!! They are dishonest and violate public health and safety! read more

Booked several hotel rooms here for a business event in Athens, NY. I'm LA based so had to go off photos and hotel reviews. Was shocked at state of hotel lobby and general atmosphere when I arrived at property to do check in. Rooms do not match photos, we found the rooms to be grimey, rundown, and moldy. The online photos promise updated amenities, these rooms were something out of a low budget 1980s horror film. Some of my team expressed that they did not feel safe staying at this accommodation, and unfortunately due to a short turn around in stay, and because we could not reach hotel manager (called several times throughout the business day, staff would yell and then hang up) to help fix this, we were stuck with this booking. Additionally, we had to have an early check out for a team member that got sick and had to leave early and that money was not refunded to us. That booking was done directly through Howard Johnson. Staff members at front desk were unable to help with this, again saying only the hotel manager could address, we were given the phone number (general line) to speak with hotel manager who never returned our calls regarding issues. Through our Expedia booking we had some last minute changes (switching from a king to twin and vice versa) and through Expedia the hotel manager was contacted to help fix and the hotel manager never returned call or staff would hang up on Expedia case manager. Because Expedia was unable to reach the hotel manager, Expedia had to "close out" the claim. Both are guilty here, but more so the Howard Johnson hotel manager and their customer service team. Feels like the MO here is for front of house staff to hang up or mislead guests until they become frustrated and give up on trying to correct bad situations/look for refunds. For those shopping around for their next hotel stay, beware. This is not a safe location and hotel is misleading and taking advantage of guests from out of state with the posted photos on this and other websites. Feels like the hotel is able to stay in business due to long term housing for locals that find themselves on hard times. Additionally I am worried that the hotel is using AI to pad their reviews, because what we experienced (construction, dingy rooms to say the least) does not match up with the expectations via their online presence, alongside using very misleading photos of hotel. I will not be a customer of Howard Johnson or Wyndham Properties again. Additionally, I have filed a formal complaint with the Better Business Bureau. read more

PLEASE do yourself a favor and spend an extra $30-40 to stay somewhere a step up from here. This hotel is outdated and disgusting. I'd rather sleep in my car, but not in their parking lot that is super creepy. From the moment I walked in to the front desk, I could tell I made a huge mistake, but I had already booked through Expedia. 9/10, I check reviews before booking but I was so tired and just wanted a place to stay. Upon checking in, the lady said to swipe my card for the incidentals (I already paid online through Expedia). Come to find out, a few days later they charged me for the incidentals! I'm now trying to dispute it with my bank. The hallways and rooms smell awful and they are dirty... something out of a horror movie. I will not go into detail for privacy reasons, but I did not feel safe here alone as a woman. There were sketchy people walking around and they weren't many cars in the parking lot, so it was noticeable I was traveling alone. I felt so uncomfortable that I left not even 2 hours of being there and booked a hotel in another city. The WORST hotel I have ever been to. read more

This hotel is dirty, old and not well maintained. There are stains in the shower and on the comforter. The furniture is tattered and the front desk person is rude and unhelpful! He didn't want to provide a receipt or plastic fork. Additionally there's no elevator. People pay their money to stay here so this owner needs to do better!!! read more

I really have no idea why this hotel has such a low rating? I'm really confused. When we walked into our room it was decent. It wasn't beautiful but it was decorated well enough that I didn't see any issue. The TV worked great, there was a big window with enough to light up the room, the lamps and the art work on the wall were cool. The shower was big enough and had a weird rotating shower head that I'm not sure of the purpose. Other than that, I would definitely stay here again. It was not at all dirty to me. The only disappointment, they don't have breakfast -- which is fine and all, but they do tell their guests that we get a discount at the diner attached to the hotel, which FYI we do not anymore. They clearly told us that when the bill came. The room came with a fridge, I think a microwave? And coffee as well. It's such a good, short driving distance to the falls! And the nice thing about it is it's right off the main highway. I would recommend this place to anyone traveling around this area. read more

The lady at the front desk was very sweet. The king bed we had was very firm and pillows super soft so not what i am used to but i dealt with it the one night we were there... On the secone floor everytime we went past the laundry room/ice machine. It smelled like an turmeric or curry spice very pungent but once u walk past you dont smell it any longer The rooms need some updating. When my sister opened the tub water before she shaved her legs the water came out brown then went clear. I guess these rooms are not very used for water to build up that way The tv channel guide provided did not match the stations Their was water at the bottom of the fridge that gave it a musty smell it def needs some baking soda in there to absorb the odors. So basically if you can live with those little things i noted for a night or two you can stay here. Me personally i might not return until some updating is done. Felt like 1989 in the hallway and rooms Also the side we were on was facing the highway so if the window is open obviously you can hear the cars ans trucks going past but the sound is blocked surprisingly by the window read more

So it was an Ok stay. The linens were clean, the room looked maintained, check in was easy and the pool was swimmable for my kid. BUT what I didn't like was there was pizza crust and an empty soda bottle hiding above the coat rack on the shelf. I know that most people would need a ladder to see on top of the shelf but that needs to be checked for cleanliness too. Another thing that shocked me was that house keeping didn't vacuum or make/freshen/the beds. I've been to some economy hotels before and I have always come back to a room that was tidied up. I mean it wasn't in disarray but it would have been nice to come back to a remade bed. Staying here is ok if you are looking to get some shut eye and it was affordable. Just know you are getting a place to lay your head no other real amenities to make your stay more than average. Staff was nice. read more

If I could give zero stars I would give zero The treatment before even booking this hotel is horrible. They say they welcome service animals by God don't ever go there with a service animal. Clearly Tim Patel needs to understand what the ADA Law is and actually go look it up and read it! The refusal of a service animal is against the law and there is no such thing as papers and to not even bother calling somebody back to tell them what said papers he was looking probably because there are no such papers! Unfortunately, we stayed here for two days but I wish we hadn't. Our checkin clerk stated that we had late checkout at 1pm but we had two people bang on our door ( one with a nasty look on her face like she was pissed) saying that 12PM sounds better. Excuse me? Why offer late check out then knock on our door the time you want us to leave and expect us to be out at that time? Not to mention, they had to spray our room because it was infested with bugs. I took videos and photos too. The rags in the bathroom were used and stained and then folded back up as if they were clean. This has been horrible experience and we will never stay here ever again! Staff stole my son's money! My son (15) left his wallet in the room. When we came back to look for it, it was hidden in a pillow case and all of his money was gone...$200 and an Amazon card. He was so devastated. All his Christmas and birthday money, gone! The front desk called the owner who did nothing about it. This was our second time staying here since my brother moved up to the area a couple of months ago. We were planning on making this our go-to place, but are appalled that the owner wouldn't do anything to rectify the situation. Not even a couple of free nights! In the future we will stay in one of the other many hotels in the area and suggest you do the same. read more

It is astonishing that there are so many things to do, so many places to visit, and so many extraordinary food venues, and yet, there aren't any reasonably priced hotels above a 2.5 star rating in Saugerties. This place was rated 2 stars, and I will concur. The room was clean but extremely humid. My sister and family stayed in a room just down the hall, but that room hadn't been renovated yet. Her beds were leaning, there wasn't a desk, and the shower head was at 5', not nearly high enough for an adult. The check in process was inefficient. It seems that their technology hasn't been updated, so the receptionist has to go from here to there to get everything needed. All in all, the hotel met our needs, but it wasn't one of the best by a long shot. read more

This experience was absolutely terrible, the vending machines wouldn't even give me food ,the room wasn't clean, and there we liquor bottles in are room ,there is bugs in the carpet, I can't even talk about the how terrible the internet was I was sitting in a chair barely having internet bugs fly around the room. This experience I have had at the place was absolutely horrible and disgusting when we first arrived my mom asked for a room at 4pm and they said all the rooms were dirty because they were partying and getting drunk at 2am charged the card twice they when we went up to our room we went to open our window and as we were going to the window we saw a old liquor bottle and soda cans that were not ours and the service was just as bad as the hotel rooms so many gross bugs and the Wi-Fi does not work on even one device and the vending machines would not dispense my food and I put multiple dollars in the machine and the part of our wall was starting to rip apart in the middle of the wall and very inappropriate writings in the sauna would not recommend sleep in your car and save your money and when I asked to resolve these problems she was more concerned about there show moury and not helping me and my mom with my issues and there was two super annoying little girls that were running in the hallway knocking on everyone's door and service did not help with the issue(would not recommend) read more

It's the first time I've ever had to check out of a hotel in the middle of the night....I guess I should have been suspect when a hotel that was previously booked up suddenly had rooms. The hotel itself reeked like a bad ashtray..... Our non smiling room also smelled. When we went to wash, the water was brown. We called the front desk but they couldn't tell is anything. We ran the water for a while but it got worse. We asked to speak to manager but there was none on site? Stayed here on an overnight trip. The receptionist was very friendly and was excited to see us there. The rooms were clean and up-to-date... The new up-to-date for Hojo. New style... But wonderful Howard Johnson colors. We did not get a chance to use the pool but it looks amazing and I'm sure it would be hard to get out of it once you're in it for enjoyment purposes. We will definitely stay at this hotel again. The rooms were clean everything was great. Wish there was a breakfast though. read more

We booked for a weekend trip with friends just to get out of town and for the price, it's an absolute bargain. The front desk staff were all incredibly friendly and helpful- they set us up with adjoining rooms at check-in (a real treat for the 2 kids, who are best friends), provided us with delivery menus and warned us of all the things to keep the key cards away from so they didn't stop working (I've had it happen before; it was good to be reminded). The rooms were clean and comfortable, and I loved the retro decor. We all slept very well. Water pressure was good and plenty of hot water. The pool was open, which was a wonderful treat in Covid-19 times. The restaurant is not open currently, but there are plenty of places nearby to eat in Saugerties, and the coffee machine in the lobby was always available. The roof in the swimming area leaks a little, and the common areas haven't been refurbished in a while (although our rooms clearly had been), but it didn't affect the comfort of our stay one bit. It's not fancy, but it's well located, great value for the price and comes with an awful lot of charm, to boot (I especially loved all the equestrian statuary). I would give this place no stars if I could. We booked 4 rooms a month ago. We tried to check in on Saturday. We arrived a bit before checkin when they told us the rooms would be ready by 3pm, which was understandable. 3pm comes and we went back to get our rooms. They advised us the rooms weren't ready. They had late checkouts from a wedding that occurred the day before. Another wedding party was checking in at the same time. Somehow the wedding party's room was ready and had no issues. The receptionist kept giving us the same story, as if we were supposed to understand. I'm honestly not sure how you have a reservation and you're not able to get your room but other people can. It was a bit wierd because everyone who got rooms were Caucasian, even those who came in after us. My group are Indian and we couldn't get a room. Eventually, we got a second room. The rest of us decided to wait in the lobby for the third room that was supposed to be ready at 4pm now. A few more people showed up and got rooms. My sister was with us and the receptionist didn't see her before and asked her if she needed assistance. My sister expressed our frustration with folks from the wedding present. I guess the receptionist didnt want to look bad, but all of a sudden 2 rooms that were right next to each other became available. The rooms are disgusting. They're poorly lit, have a lack of electric outlets. The bathroom looks like a public bathroom and is poorly maintained. There was a streak found in my toilet before I even used it. Lastly the walls were paper thin. My sister could hear everything I was saying in the other room. I would recommend staying somewhere else. read more

We drove up from NYC to snowboard at hunter mountain and stayed at this HOJO which is about a 30 min drive from the slopes. It is not beautiful or great or that good actually, but it is alright. It's definitely time to renovate. But it wasn't awful. We paid like $140 for the room which was way way too much for the quality of this place. But it was a snowy weekend and a coveted area bc of hunter mountain. Overall it was ok, only because we weren't in the room at all except to sleep. read more

Stayed here with a friend for the night, prior to some hiking training the next day. Lets just say I was not impressed: - Duvet sheets had blood stains on them. - I asked the front desk for a spoon. I was told they dont normally honor such requests and I got one from the employee stash. WTF? - No wifi. Yeah, I should have brought a sleeping bag and just slept in the car. At the hotel room, I ended up sleeping on the floor atop some sheets and was quite thankful in the morning to not have rat shit on top of me. read more

I never write reviews, but when I was there at least 5 young people were being very loud.....I recognized their distinctive clown makeup and interesting - to say the least - tattoos. I was a member of a subcultural group myself as a young man but have thankfully grown UP as some people have obviously not done. The staff did not recognize the fact that these people were JUGGALOS. The room was very fine too stuffy and the staff was ok and gave good local recommendations. I left early in the morning and enjoyed going for a hike. I tried to go for a swim but the pool had bottles of a strange soda called Faygo everywhere...........too much litter but sauna was not bad but not seperate ones for men and women. This place does the job..especially for staying overnight for a multi-day ski trip to Hunter Mt. The room smells like ash tray. The blankets have cigarette burns on them. The bathroom maintains its steam well, like a sauna, with no ventilation when the door is closed. There is a 3-6 ft deep pool that closes at 9pm, but if you're in there before then, they won't lock the pool. I do like how the sink is separate from the toilet/shower. Also, the heater is quite powerful. I would not mind staying here again, but seriously, it isn't a 5-star hotel. Don't expect too much, but again, it does the job. Good: -Friendly staff -Reasonable price -Free parking and Internet -Microwave and bar fridge in room Bad: -Carpet needs changing throughout this place. It smells. -Non renovated rooms are make me want to keep my shoes on when I walk around and avoid the bathroom -The renovated rooms are better but they only renovated selected parts; it is not a complete Reno from what I can see. They change the flooring, bathroom vanity, sink and mirror. -Most of the time there is someone standing just outside the hotel door smoking -seemed like some people where living in the rooms long term and there were strong cooking smells coming from the room I'm don't think I would go back. I call it the HoJo Hilton. Overpriced flea bag of a motel. Bathroom had nasty musty smell, probably because there was no fan. AC was spotty. King sized bed with 4 tiny pillows that seemed more like couch cushions. Light switch did not work when you entered room. Probably blown bulb. Coffee pot was dirty and disgusting. All this for the discounted AARP price of $160. Could stayed at a 4 star hotel for that. Whole place had rundown feel. Checkout was 11am but housekeeping was trying to get in room at 10am. This place is garbage. There was trash in the pool and something brown as well I'm pretty sure it was a poop. When we got back into our room we heard animal sounds and when we figured someone has just brought their dog into the hotel room we heard human groans. They were sexual sounds and when we went to the hallway to confront the other room multiple horses ran out and knocked us over. You better believe we are absolutely suing this hotel. Great place to stay. I was on my way from NYC to a motorcycle rally further upstate. Making that ride in 1 day, participating in the events, and riding back to NYC was too much. Got a room here for the night as a halfway point. Friendly staff, clean rooms, the attached restaurant had good, hot food at a reasonable price. It's a basic place, but is clean and comfortable. I've been staying at this Ho Joe's in Saugerties for many, many years. I used to live in Saugerties. I made my reservation through Wyndham rewards. I requested downstairs because there is an older couple, parents of the owner, who cook curry day and night. The smell permeates throughout the second floor. I got the flu on the first day of our mini vaca to visit the fam. I had the do not disturb sign up the whole time we were there, Wednesday - Sunday. We emptied our own garbage, and had enough towels, which were rags, I have rags better than those towels. The older man that continually walks around, he told me to take my do not disturb sign down. I told him no, I am sick and do NOT WANT TO BE DISTURBED! So needless to say, the old man wanted to get in my room real bad for some reason. My husband went golfing, I stayed in bed, sweating out my fever. Well the old man came in my room, with me in there, naked in bed. I ran to the bathroom, scared to death. He poked around, and picked up dirty towels on he floor. I was so scared. I thought he was going to rape me. I kept quite, hoping he didn't see me hiding behind the bathroom door. I have NEVER, in all my years of traveling, had anyone come in my hotel room poking around in the room. WELL, I WAS IN THE ROOM! I never felt so uncomfortable staying at a hotel, like I did here. Most front desk peeps were always confused. I told them I was sick and did not want to be disturbed, but yet the called me twice on the phone about my reservation that was split in two reservations, because I used points for one half and no points for the second half. They are supposed to be a Wyndham hotel, but yet they don't get the points system that gives you discounts and free nights. Needless to say, I will NEVER stay at this place ever again. You pay for privacy and a place to lay your head, and that creepy old man stalks you and comes in your room anyway, even when you're in bed naked. WITH THE DO NOT DISTURB SIGN UP. BEWARE OF THIS PLACE. We noticed they had cockroaches and bedbugs. I can't believe I didn't notice it until the last night we were there. The bugs were marching all over the place. So let me preface this by saying that I have the utmost respect for Howard Johnson's mission, and Howard Deering Johnson's (rest his soul) love of ice cream, which I share as well. I love staying at HoJo while I travel, and this one is among the best for multiple reasons. They have an absolutely lovely pool and sauna, where I personally enjoy getting warm and, dare I say, freaky (as the kids say), with my wonderful life partner and hubbie :) It's right in great skiing country, so that's an added bonus. The room has wonderful humid air and no drafts, so my skin always feels soft when I stay there. I prefer slightly damp environments for my sensitive aging skin. The rooms always feel cozy, and are never overly made up and sterile. They definitely have a lot of life in them! For those low-class reviewers who gave this place negative reviews, you are MISSING OUT on a great budget hotel. Unfortunately I must give the inn only three stars because the last time I stayed there I realized that the lady at the desk had no pupils. It is a shame that hotels no longer provide the Good Book. I visited this Howard Johnson a few weeks ago during my trip to visit the Catskills, as soon as I showed up I was immediately disappointed as I had booked & payed for 2 adjoining rooms with king sized beds, and was forced to stay in 2 non-adjoining queen size rooms, without any price reduction. Before we even entered our rooms, we immediately began experiencing issues, the keycards barely work on the doors, and we ended up being locked outside of the hotel multiple times, as well as being locked out of our rooms and requiring to get at least three replacement keys. We ended up using the windows to our rooms as doors as this was the only way to guarantee we could get back in. In the three days and two nights we stayed there, room service did not enter the room once. We received a note saying they did not service us due to our do not disturb sign (which was not present) which also states that room service checked the room several times that day before leaving (Which I also highly doubt considering I was only out of the room for about thirty minutes). My cousin used one of the provided towels, and was greeted by a giant centipede, not to mention the literal infestation of spiders (Me and my brother counted a total of 22 just by the door) The vending machines also seem to reject any quarter newer than 2005. To top it all off, my 11 year old brother was opening the bible provided in the hotel, only to find & accidentally touch a dried out, used, condom. We brought the bible to the man at the front desk, and his first response was "Do we check each bible page by page? No." Not a "sorry" not a "How can we make this better?", he just tried to downplay the situation. He told us that he would leave a note for his manager with our phone number and a report of the situation, when we called the next morning the manager said she saw no note left for her. I feel obliged to at least mention that the pool and sauna were nice, I had no issues in that area, and it also had some decent views of the mountains and stars at night, however this in no way makes up for everything else that occurred to us. They originally refunded us for ONE night, and then took back that refund a day later leaving our account in the red. PLEASE do not stay at this hotel, they do not deserve your money. Unless they make serious commitments to improve the facility, the only thing they deserve is to be shut down by a health inspector. The owner has already replied to my review on Google, and I sincerely hope they see this one as well and know I will be posting this on every site I can find.
