The Classic Cinema in Elsternwick has the touch of class that is needed when going out to watch a film. They always have a healthy array of the Hollywood films but there is a place for the lesser known titles and foreign films where it is always refreshing to see that they support those films. It might sound wanky but it's important that you feel like it's still an occasion to go to the cinemas. It's very clean, you can get a beer or champagne and some perfectly salted popcorn to take in and the people working give you the certain respect you hope for. Now it's not just in Gold Class where you can get good service with a smile. Then in the actual cinema the seats are large where again it's clean and because a standard is set, people aren't inclined to be rude and you can enjoy your movie. I'm very big on the movie-going culture and I believe that it has changed to more of a teen thing but be sure, The Classic Cinema's are suited more for the types that still want to go to the movies as a special occasion (especially seeing as ticket prices have risen). I definitely think it's worth getting up off the couch to go and see a really good film there. I'm very happy it's my local cinema.

These are…read morevery clean, up-market and well-designed cinemas that suit the Brighton (wealthier) folk as well as the younger types from around the area. These have to be one of my favourite cinemas where I'm a member and it's worth it if you're a regular. It's pretty expensive to see films but with a discount and member benefits it just means it's not as hard on the pocket as usual. It also means that your movie going experience is a little nicer. I'm very found of the bar and being able to take a beer or wine into the nicely set out and roomy cinemas where I love the fact they play some of the "Arty" films as well as the usual Hollywood blockbusters. Brighton Bay Cinemas are probably my favourite along with the Classic in Elsternwick.

In this part of town you'd expect nothing less than a bit of luxury. A feature light bulb chandelier welcomes you to the foyer of cinemas where velvet lounges reign supreme. The bar is well stocked and there are a number of gourmet snacks on offer. Brighton Bay recently hosted the Lavazza Italian Film Festival, and a great night was had by all.

I mean, an adult ticket for $11? How much is one of the bigger chains? I don't think concession tickets are that cheap! The movies tend to be a little bit older, as in they're not the newest blockbuster released. They're new-ish, so if you can wait to see a movie, this place is a great option. Apart from that, the rest of the experience is pretty similar to other cinemas. The service is good, with the staff being friendly (it has to be, given the number of seniors that go). It is hard to find if you're not sure exactly where it is. If you drive down the street that goes from Blackburn road at the traffic lights, you'll find it on the outside corner of the right hand turn. I know this sounds like pretty random directions, but you'll find it knowing this information.

ACMI, formerly known as the Australian Centre for the Moving Image, is a free museum for everything…read moreabove movies, television and video games. Easy to find in Federation Square. So interesting to wander and see how movies are made as well as props from movies and television shows. Loved the section on animation. Grab a disc to collect information that you can view later about what you experienced. Definitely worth a short or long detour to ACMI.

We were walking around Melbourne and checking out it without a real purpose and saw a sign saying…read morethat entrance was free. You only had to pay extra if you wanted to experience the exhibit they have running at the time, which would probably be worth it. It seems to be a rotating exhibit. The free part was about the moving picture over the years. When you go in they give you this little disk that had a unique code and probably an nfc chip so you can tap it at each exhibit you liked to "collect" it and go to a website later and vote so the things you saw once again. This really makes you want to check more exhibits out and go all around. I think I connected 45 because at the end they have a spot to check how many exhibits you collected. They even had a station where you could create your own flip book. You would stand in front of a screen which would record you mongering for 3-5 seconds and then at the gift shop you could see the flip book and but it if you wanted. My wife and I both bought ours.. a more personalized souvenir. At the end they have a few kiosks where you can tap your cats to donate and we did that because this is definitely an experience that is worth staying around. I ain't it must get really busy on the weekends, but during the day in a weekend, it was the right amount of busy. I would definitely check it out and kids would love it.

My friends would disown me if they read this, but most of the independent cinemas in Melbourne are a bit shit. It's not their fault, really, it's just the economics. They want to show independent cinema, which doesn't draw crowds. Means they can't compete with the chains on comfort or space, which means they can't pull in large crowds for the more commercial films they show. Why none of this applies to the Westgarth, I don't know. But it's an independent cinema (well, more or less) that combines the stylistic aspirations of the old cinema culture with the comfort and convenience of the new chains. And they still show a whole load of independent film. Final note: on Friday nights, they do a midnight screening of a cult movie every week.

However, this is one of the Palace Cinemas which means that it tends to be one of the old suburban cinemas that has been bought up and tends to show movies that are a little classier, and more intelectually challenging, that your typical movieplex. The movie I ended up seeing here happened to be the Royal Shakespeare Company's Cymbeline, and having discovered a cinema that is closer to where I live showing such movies I have to admit that I am pretty impressed. The cinema still has its old charms, and you can also take beers into the cinema as well (as long as they come from the candy bar that is).

The theatre seems new and the "Xtreme Screen" was big with excellent sound. The seats are very wide and recline with controls similar to an airplane seat. The bathrooms are far too small for a theatre of this size.

Thankfully the lasers don't really make that sound during your movie watching sessions. I'm a massive fan of cinemas and movies, from a technical side, IMAX does some incredible things. If you are into Scientific documentaries about the Amazon, space, oceans or stories about cute animals - IMAX has you covered with their exclusive lineup of movies made just for them. They also have a massive range of Hollywood blockbuster films in converted IMAX 3D which can be interesting. The films shot for IMAX show of the capabilities of this hardware more (specially made custom screens built for the room are just one of them!). The seats are large and comfy and as it's designated seating you can book online and find a nice central seat. I wouldn't recommend sitting too far forward as you will be craning your neck up the whole movie. The sound is brilliant too. IMAX is a great experience, even if their lasers don't make that sci-fi sound.
