Awesome cinema just love going here. Much better than going to a Hoyts or Village! Great experience.

A deeply disappointing experience with Village Cinemas -- multiple system failures, unusable…read morevouchers, and no meaningful customer support. I was gifted Village Cinemas vouchers which were well within their expiry date. When I tried to redeem them for a Gold Class session, the website repeatedly returned the same error message every time, across multiple devices and browsers: "The voucher code/pin was not valid or voucher has already been redeemed." This was simply not true -- the vouchers were valid and unused. At the same time, I was unable to reset my Vrewards password (the reset link never worked), and the "Contact Us" form on their website returned the same error over and over again, making it impossible to reach support digitally. I attempted to call the Sunshine location, but Village Cinemas has no direct phone support. The 1300 MOVIES number is just a pre-recorded loop of session times -- no help at all. This meant that every method Village offers for customers to get assistance failed: Website booking failed Voucher redemption failed Password reset failed Website contact form failed No phone support exists Eventually I emailed customer service. My messages were either partially addressed, responded to incorrectly (including being repeatedly addressed by the wrong name), or simply ignored. By the time this dragged on, the movie session I had attempted to book went ahead with only two tickets sold -- exactly the seats we were trying to book -- meaning Village not only lost a paying customer but provided zero assistance to fix the problem. Then there is the whole fact the gift voucher is for a gold glass movie - but doesn't cover the booking fee you are required to pay to get a ticket! To make matters worse, Village Cinemas is currently advertising Christmas gift vouchers with a 12-month expiry, which appears to contradict Australian Consumer Law requiring a minimum three-year expiry on gift cards (with very limited exceptions). This raises serious concerns about compliance and consumer fairness. After weeks of back-and-forth, the issue was never resolved. The vouchers remain unusable solely because Village's own systems prevented their redemption, yet no refund, replacement, or practical solution was offered. I am not someone who normally leaves reviews, but this experience reflects a business whose website, customer service structure, and error-handling systems are simply not fit for purpose in 2025. This was not about a "policy" issue -- it was about a complete lack of functional support, and being left with a product I was unable to use due entirely to Village's own technical failures. I hope Village Cinemas addresses these issues seriously, because at present, the customer experience falls far below what any cinema patron should reasonably expect.

Good choice of Bollywood movies. Otherwise, pretty standard for a cinema. Good experience though.read more

Did you know there's a cinema hidden away in Southbank/South Melbourne? It was news to me too, but…read moreI went to The Backlot Studios to check it out as an event venue. Backlot is a private cinema, open to groups - think work functions, parties, hens/bucks (apparently you can play games on the big screen too). The cinema fits about 80 people and the chairs are so comfy. Big black leather seats and big double seats in the back. Unlike some smaller/pop-up movie theatres, this place gives you the proper cinema experience - dark, big screen, big sound, no distractions from the outside world. There is a candy bar at the front that will play videos (and logos if you're a business hiring it out). They have catering options or there's a small surcharge per head to bring in food/drink depending on what kind of catering you're looking at. Looking forward to heading back to catch a movie with a friend or 70.

With only one screening room they managed to really make watching a movie comfortable. Between the giant leather couches, the free private parking, the movie sound which plays in the bathroom so that you don't get left behind and the decor which makes going to the movies more authentic they really did well. To top it off they even have couple's leather chairs so that you can really get up close when your parter gets a fright. I'll make sure to post more in depth once I've experience it for real!

Boasting a licensed bar offering coffee, food and some pretty damn good ice cream, The Palace Westgarth is notable for its all inclusive and highly eclectic film programme which runs the gauntlet from Hollywood blockbusters to European film festivals and countless indie flicks in between. This particular outpost of the boutique Palace chain also has special events such as its Friday night 'Cult Vault' screenings showcasing classic and cult cinema. A must visit for its three state of the art screens, diverse film programme and culturally significant location.

Unfortunately I have to say that the Palace Westgarth does not always show movies to warrant people from all over Melbourne knowing it's presence. Don't get me wrong the Palace Westgarth does show many great movies and has a number of great film festivals throughout the year - including the Spanish and French ones of most note. It has the Friday night film vault where they show old school movies usually of the horror or other cult genres at the stoke of midnight. However, most of the time I personally feel that they don't show a great selection of films. They don't show many blockbusters, which is fine, but they also don't show that many independent films either. In fact it seems to me that a large component of their catalogue includes kids movies, second rate British romantic comedies and cheap Hollywood films. All this means is that I find I never end up going all that often to a cinema which I desperately want to support.
