This place is beautiful. The Sun theatre was established in 1938 and since then many refurbishments has made it the amazing art deco structure it is today and worth admiring... Its also located in a great spot among gorgeous coffee shops, restaurants and boutiques and if you've got time to spare before hand there is also The Sun Book Shop (used to be a candy bar) where you can easily bury your head and forget time for a while...

The bathrooms are really plush too which is important, no? You can only pay with cash here so make sure you leave enough time to sprint to the ATM before your movie starts. The Sun Theatre is surrounded by really nice places to eat that are inexpensive and easy to get a table at so it is a nice spot to have a relaxed evening. Tickets are only $11 on Tuesday. Oh and there is a really nice bookstore next door that is worth a look if you have a spare few minutes before or after your movie.

I was gifted Village Cinemas vouchers which were well within their expiry date. When I tried to redeem them for a Gold Class session, the website repeatedly returned the same error message every time, across multiple devices and browsers: "The voucher code/pin was not valid or voucher has already been redeemed." This was simply not true -- the vouchers were valid and unused. At the same time, I was unable to reset my Vrewards password (the reset link never worked), and the "Contact Us" form on their website returned the same error over and over again, making it impossible to reach support digitally. I attempted to call the Sunshine location, but Village Cinemas has no direct phone support. The 1300 MOVIES number is just a pre-recorded loop of session times -- no help at all. This meant that every method Village offers for customers to get assistance failed: Website booking failed Voucher redemption failed Password reset failed Website contact form failed No phone support exists Eventually I emailed customer service. My messages were either partially addressed, responded to incorrectly (including being repeatedly addressed by the wrong name), or simply ignored. By the time this dragged on, the movie session I had attempted to book went ahead with only two tickets sold -- exactly the seats we were trying to book -- meaning Village not only lost a paying customer but provided zero assistance to fix the problem. Then there is the whole fact the gift voucher is for a gold glass movie - but doesn't cover the booking fee you are required to pay to get a ticket! To make matters worse, Village Cinemas is currently advertising Christmas gift vouchers with a 12-month expiry, which appears to contradict Australian Consumer Law requiring a minimum three-year expiry on gift cards (with very limited exceptions). This raises serious concerns about compliance and consumer fairness. After weeks of back-and-forth, the issue was never resolved. The vouchers remain unusable solely because Village's own systems prevented their redemption, yet no refund, replacement, or practical solution was offered. I am not someone who normally leaves reviews, but this experience reflects a business whose website, customer service structure, and error-handling systems are simply not fit for purpose in 2025. This was not about a "policy" issue -- it was about a complete lack of functional support, and being left with a product I was unable to use due entirely to Village's own technical failures. I hope Village Cinemas addresses these issues seriously, because at present, the customer experience falls far below what any cinema patron should reasonably expect.

Unfortunately, with no serious competition, Reading can get away with providing average service and letting their cleanliness slide. The building is only a few years old, which is the only factor keeping this place as a preference from the city-based option. Staff are all school aged kids, some try hard but their heart really isn't in it - so the floors are dirty (seats too but the stains are hidden in the dark) and the bathrooms show the lack of attention. As with all cinemas the ticket prices are outrageous and 'candy' bar items are confoundingly overpriced. But to see the 'latest' movies you have no real option nearby. A better option - stay at home and make yourself a batch of real popcorn, have it with a real coke (not post-mix) and dip your ice cream cone in iced-magic !

They serve all of the usual treats you need with the added bonus of barista coffee and alcoholic beverages that can be taken into the cinema. Plus the popcorn is healthy!! They don't tend to show all of the blockbusters but they do show a wide range of films including some art house and foreign films.

As a cinema complex this is okay and it basically your standard suburban cinemas, so don't expect any fancy movies here, just your typical Hollywood offerings.
