I finished all my math classes one grade early, got a 5 on the AP Calc test, near perfect on the math section on the SAT, and entered college with math in my mind. Unfortunately, a math major never stuck, but I know that I wouldn't have been so good in math if it wasn't for Kumon. Now I attended and worked at the Kumon in the bay area, but being the great cousin I am, convinced my aunt and uncle in socal to let my cousin attend Kumon. She probably hated me at first for getting her parents to enroll her in additional academic work, but she ain't complaining now!....usually. My cousin...who's now in middle school, is top of her class in math. She makes me feel proud *tear* hahaha This Kumon center is a lot smaller than the one I'm use to, but that's a good thing! Because now the instructor has more time to focus on the kid and actually remember their names and faces. It provides a quieter study area, and intimate setting that doesn't look like a kid factory like the one I'm use to. The people running this place were super nice to me when I talked to them. I talked about my personal experiences with Kumon, and they were super happy to hear about all my achievements. They are super optimistic and told me that what happened to me is what they hope to see every student in their center achieve.

It's not quite tutoring.. it's more of repetition. but im not sure why people complain that it's alot of work. its only 20 minutes per day to do the booklets. and 2xs a week they go in to the center and do classwork.. takes approx 40 min for those visits.. anyway, my daughter does math sooo quickly now.. i cant believe she can figure out tips and such faster than me! while they dont tutor kids, their math skills are so fast that i really think that when my kid starts doing long math problems, she can focus on getting the 'how to' without being bogged down by the simple stuff she has already mastered.. and lastly, my favorite thing of all, is that i am no longer 'the bad guy'.. the booklets are timed and need to be turned in to the kumon center.. A friend recommended Mathnasium, so I decided to give it a try. At first, my plan was just to get her short-term help with the topics she was struggling with. After only a couple of months, I noticed a huge difference--she was doing better in school and could complete most of her math homework with confidence. On the occasions she didn't understand, I loved that she could bring her homework to Mathnasium and get the support she needed to truly grasp the concepts. This is a Japanese company where you repeat math problems over and over again until it becomes second nature. My son is pretty good at math ( he asks me for help and I refer him to my accountant sister), so he is just here to increase his skill. They also offer reading comprehension but we haven't tried that yet ( maybe during the summer, I am so mean)! This type of program is for the child that just needs more practice and not one on one tutoring. They will help them threw a problem but they do not take that much time. The child is first tested to get a starting point. This starting point is usually much easier then what they are currently doing in school ( my son started with multiplication ) but remember it is because they need to have the basics ingrained before they continue. I find it has been well worth the cost and my sons math skills have increased greatly! Lastly, 90% of the students and all my Asian friends came here as a child.....Nuff said!

I hated how every Monday and Thursday, I was forced to be crammed into some remote room doing math worksheets when instead I could be playing video games or watching T.V. However, this place has really grew on me in the past 10 years or so. I've only been in the math program, so I can't speak for the effectiveness from the reading program; however from what I've seen it looks fine. So here's how Kumon works: When you first join, your child will get a diagnostic test. Your child will be placed in a level that is WAY below his level. For example when I was in third grade and doing Multiplication in school, I was doing addition in Kumon. I thought to myself, "WOW! This place is so stupid and a waste! Why am I doing addition?" This is on purpose. Your child starts at a lower skill level not because the program is trying to make them learn; it is teaching them to do problems efficiently and correctly. Your child will start off slow; however you will see the benefits of this later on. Kumon works in levels: These levels are labeled by letters. I'm currently on Letter J, which is advanced algebra and basic Pre-Calculus. Here's the thing. Don't send your child to Kumon if they are struggling in school or need help with specific concepts, get them an individual tutor for that. Kumon builds the foundation for basic study habits and skills; I was sent to Kumon as a child and now see the effects of me going there kicking in. I can now mentally solve problems much faster than my peers, and I work faster and more efficient in ALL of my school subjects. At first when you join Kumon you will be discouraged; you will not see immediate results. It will take maybe 1 or 2 years for you to actually see progress. I recommend that you send your child here maybe starting off in third grade or so; and pulling them out around the beginning of high school. Although It's expensive, if you can afford it, it is definitely worth it. I personally recommend only sending your child here if you know you can commit them to it for a long period. Also, make sure your child does their worksheets. I would not be where I am today if my parents constantly reminded me to do my Kumon. tldr: Kumon will not benefit at first, but you will later see massive results. In that case, I feel as if there is so much I can say about this place! To start off, I'll describe the environment. The classrooms are pretty much well taken care of. Staff members are putting time and effort to keep this place sanitary and safe for students. Teachers even spend extra time to ensure cleanliness and put up some decorations in the classes. Aside from the physical environment of the classrooms, the staff members additionally feel like family to me! They have been treating me with kindness and care for as long as I can remember. Despite having to discuss about school, they build a fun and interesting atmosphere for students. The teachers play a big role there and I'm grateful for many wonderful influences in my life. The environment I have been surrounded by for many years is one of the main reasons why I have grown to like this place. Along with my surroundings, this place is doing more than enough in terms of education for students attending. There is always extra practice to do after homework and a wide range of books to choose from. Because I spent many consecutive years there, I found many benefits to the provided resources of the center. I used prep books and multiple practice packets. On the plus side of this, I didn't always have to bring my textbooks home. They carry most of my math and science textbooks, always staying updated with common core. On a more personal note, the students are really like no other. I can pretty much say that there are issues that arise, but nothing that interferes with other students and their education. Whenever conflicts start, the staff members are always there to straighten things out. I know that I can trust them and they have given me reason not to be concerned when attending the tutoring. Nevertheless, I even met my current best friend there. We have formed an amazing group of friends who have become important figures in my life. Although I no longer attend this tutoring center, I have been visiting and encouraging others to try this place out. I even decided to volunteer here for multiple purposes! The location is generally near by my area and close to convenient stores like CVS and Jack in the Box. It is apparent as to how much I favor this tutoring center. All in all, I have no idea how to show my huge appreciation for this place. Thank you Mrs. Dung, Mrs. Jenny, Miss Rea, Mr. Tony, Mr. Bui, and Ms. Chelsey. For those who don't know, the Image-ATMs will actually "read" and scan your checks on the spot. You can then have the machine print out a image copy of your check(s) on your receipt. You do not need a envelope for any types of deposits here. Your checks and cash go straight into the machine. Oh and it'll also verify the different types of denominations of cash you have to deposit too. So you can feed the machine your wad of cash, and it'll count, verify and deposit your cash for you - and then print on your receipt the number of each denomination of cash you deposited. Nifty little device. The ATM is fee-free to members of the Credit Union "CO-OP" network (look for that triangle/COOP symbol on the back of your debit/credit card. The ATM area faces the Fountain Valley Police Department HQ - and with police cars always heading in and out, I do feel safe making deposits/using this ATM (although its always good to practice common sense and be aware of your surroundings).
