Lion and I went to check it out recently on a clear day. I am a lover of the oddball and kitschy. This meets the bill. It's made of granite, stretches down a narrow alleyway. It was pretty cool, really looks like a zipper. Simple but effective. Definitely worth a stop when visiting Barre.

I found this on the map that way when passing through Barre, so we stopped to check it out. The surprise of seeing what it is when we got to it, and sharing the experience with other visitors to town was all well worth it. Plus, we parked the car and got to some local spots, and visited the very nice library. It was a good little visit to town. So, if you're in the vicinity of Barre, definitely don't miss this. I was thinking maybe not worth it to drive more than an hour out of your way... but then again, if it's worth it to you, why not?

The grounds are well kept and the cottage itself is well preserved. I have no words to describe the breathtaking outdoor overlook. It is not to be missed. Everything within Grant's Cottage is well maintained and you truly feel as if you are brought back to the 1800's. You will enjoy the tour whether you are a history buff or just looking to gain knowledge about President Grant. I highly recommend!!

No longer used for vehicular traffic, the Hammon Covered Bridge was caught up by a flood in 1927…read morewhich sent the bridge about 1.5 miles downstream but miraculously left the structure intact. Since it was still functional, it was returned to its original location. Since then, the bridge was bypassed by a (BORING!) steel and concrete bridge and this has been turned into a tourist attraction and small park. The bridge is a is a Town lattice design and spans Otter Creek. It was built in 1842 by Asa Nourse and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. I didn't check out the fort, just the grounds and the views as a break after a few hours of driving and it's totally worth the small detour.

A beautiful piece of history to see…read more.. Well maintained. Located right on the shore of Lake Champlain and right by the lighthouse. There's a museum inside. The museum cost money, but the site is free. There are bathrooms outside, but they are only open during office hours. The site is still open to see after hours, until dusk. There's a pavilion, tables and grills. There's a parking lot structure. The museum is wheel chair accessible, the site is all grass. You can see the champlain bridge from here and there's also a restaurant right over there bridge.

The Little Red Schoolhouse, built in 1817, was the boyhood school of Paul Harris, founder of…read moreRotary International. A small edifice made of red brick with a skyscraper of importance. It is a genesis and source of the 1.2 million organization of 35,000 clubs throughout 200 countries around the world. Paul Harris lived two doors down in a beautiful colonial home. But this was one of his homes, the other one being in Racine WI. The schoolhouse became the site of the Wallingford Rotary Club. Decades later, the building was transferred to the Rotary District. While the inside is a historical treasure, the memorial gardens outside are amazing. It is a beautiful historical site.

The marker reads, "John Deere was born February, 7th, 1804 the third son of William Rinold Deere and Sarah Yates Deere. It is presumed that Sarah gave birth to John at home; over William Deere's Rutland tailor shop located on the east side of Main St. across from the park. In 1805, the family moved to Middlebury, Vermont where at the age of 17, he learned the blacksmith trade as an apprentice. When hard times hit the region in the 1830s, Deere decided to leave his wife and family temporarily and venture west. In 1836 Deere moved to Grand Detour, Illinois where, in 1837 he built the world's first steel moldboard plow - "The Plow that Tamed The West"." The marker was erected in 2012 by the Vermont Division for Historic Preservation. The sign is in near mint condition. There is parking nearby at a convenience store. The stone was placed in 1873 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. To attack Fort Ticonderoga and Fort Crown Point on Lake Champlain during the American Revolution in 1777, British General John Burgoyne led a sizable army from Montreal south. He eventually met British forces from New York City and with the intention of splitting the Colonies in half. Early in 1780, Fort Vengeance was constructed to defend the region following a series of such assaults, during which male settlers were captured and their male settlers' fields were pillaged and torched. A garrison of 150 men was deployed under the leadership of Major Ebenezer Allen. The independent Vermont Republic government authorized the construction of Fort Vengeance, a palisaded structure, as part of its northern line of defense, and it was built on Hendee's property in 1780. The fort, which was in service until 1782, had a barracks, a powder magazine, and other amenities. There are some archaeological digs here but much of the fort's property may be under highway US-7.
