After a long two days of driving, my wife and I arrived in Mansfield after departing Ossipee, New Hampshire Saturday morning. Too tired to cook, we decided that we should go out. There are relatively few dining options in Mansfield Ohio on a Sunday, thankfully Hudson and Essex is one that is available! We arrived without Reservations and seated in the dining room. We usually prefer the bar; however, as it was Sunday dinner, we wanted to be more proper. On Sundays, they do offer a dinner menu and a Sunday dinner menu. Their Sunday dinner menu is very good! We've had offerings on it before and have never been disappointed. This time we did decide to order off the regular menu. After ordering a round of cocktails to start with, we ordered a jalapeño flatbread appetizer special to start. Must say that that flatbread was extremely delicious and hot! The jalapeño slices could've been deveined and deseeded to tame the heat a little. For our main courses, I ordered their Caesar salad with blackened chicken, my wife their small filet, and mom their pierogi appetizer. Our meals came out well presented and delicious! It was the first time I've ever had their Caesar salad and I enjoyed it immensely. My wife always enjoys their steak and my mom raved about the pierogies. No formal desserts were ordered; however, I ordered a last word, which was delicious! Alec really is a great bartender and can make just about anything! We were passing through Mansfield on our way back to Columbus on a Sunday at noon. I didn't want a traditional along the Interstate type of restaurant so we drove into downtown Mansfield. Whenever traveling I always use YELP, and it was right on the mark here too. Having grown up in Youngstown, OH, and having lived near New Haven, CT, I have eaten a lot of wonderful Italian Food. We didn't want to wait for a table to open up in the regular restaurant so we decided to eat at the GASTRONOMIA Italian Deli (same kitchen as the back restaurant). My wife is handicapped and some very kind ladies moved to a "high" table so we could sit at a lower table. We ordered from a young lady with the most amazing blue eyes and she brought our food when it was ready. My wife had the Muffuletta Sub and I had the Mighty Meatball Sub. My wife could only eat 1/4 of her sandwich and I could only eat 1/2 of mine. If you have ever lived in one of the two places I mentioned, you know good Italian . This was WONDERFUL Italian. Hudson & Essex is a highlight of our annual trip to Mansfield every May. This year our waiter was Nick & he was absolutely perfect - knowledgeable, friendly, professional. He explained the items we had questions about; the food was delivered beautifully, He checked on us to make sure we were doing fine more than once. The food was amazing; we ordered prime rib, asparagus, bread assortment, and a Caesar salad with grilled chicken - and chocolate gelato which they make there. Every item was delicious. We were very surprised to find the Prohibition, let alone impressed with its experience. There is no yelp or Facebook presence. Despite such we discovered it with word of mouth and Google (they do have a discreet web page...but little traffic gets to it). We spend a month in the Ohio area and routinely have pot roast or subpar mexican Food for options...so we were excited to try it! The Prohibition requires a reservation and although it is "under" Hudson & Essex's fine dining restaurant, it does not share the same menu nor dining room. Its 29.5' underground! The dining room itself is worth the experience. Period. Setup in late 1800's to ferment beer, it has been converted to a special restaurant experience. Loved the food. I posted a picture of the room and menu from our special night It's pricey. Totally fair price and less than you would pay In Cleveland for similar. Unfortunately, the price may chase several away. You simply cannot recreate this experience or quality of food for less, though. The owners were lovely. They greeted us at our table. Thanked us for our patronage. Shared how they discovered the caverns...and, visited the other tables. Service was great. Wine pairing was remarkably inexpensive and limited to the local onsite winery options. Nice upscale restaurant. The bread service and charcuterie boards are varied and large. I'm normally not a brussel sprout person, but man, couldn't stop eating them. Oh and the delectable smell when entering- it's the wood fired grill. Too bad that doesn't come in a perfume. read more

Hours & reservations are questionable. Staff/manager would not accommodate a reservation & actually cancelled it after it was already confirmed just to try & make more money off of our party by requiring the reservation to be split up for no valid reason. The food and the service were both amazing! We sat at the bar in the restaurant upstairs which had a nice view! The bartender was super fun to talk to and we had really great service! The Armenian cheese bread is to die for! You MUST get it! My friend got the Caesar salad and she said it was good but nothing too special. We both had the filet with broccoli and truffle fries. The filet was amazing and cooked perfectly to my order. I wish the fries were thinner and crispier but that is personal preference. They still had really great flavor. The bartender recommended the whipped cheddar mash, but they were all out so we will be back to try them! They make their own wine and the few that we tried were very good! The manager even gave us a tour of the Prohibition at the Caverns, which is only open on the weekends. We will definitely be back again! read more

Great atmosphere and staff. The food is delicious, particularly the Brussels Sprouts. The quality from the bar is high and they know how to make a good Manhattan, which is rare. My one complaint is the last two times we visited we noticed lots of fruit flies and that indicates the staff is falling short in their side work and the managers don't understand how important cleanliness is to the long-term success of a restaurant. read more

I had to run an errand down from Cleveland to north central Ohio this week, Mansfield to be exact. I knew nothing about Mansfield, never been there before. And I have to admit: I thought it was going to be a slog and a chore and that I'd be lucky if I found something other than fast food for dinner. Then I had the good fortune to discover Hudson and Essex. This was an excellent fine dining restaurant, on par with the better ones in Northeast Ohio. Housed in what was originally the showroom for two old automotive brands, Hudson and Essex, the dining room is tastefully decorated and sports a beautiful bar with two large mirrors. Downstairs is a more informal, cafe-style space with live jazz on Friday and Saturday nights. There is also a nice patio. And they make their own wine, importing grapes from a friend who owns a Napa winery. I had a small taste of their Malbec and it was very good. Everything we had here was delicious, but the baked feta with olives, sundried tomatoes, and grilled bread was really something else. The ribeye with root vegetables and garlic mashed potatoes, in a creamy horseradish sauce topped with chimichurri, was excellent. And the wine list, while on the smaller side, had excellent options (Silver Oak, Derange, Quilt, etc.). I went with a Brunello, because I like the stronger tannins with steak, and wasn't disappointed. We sat at the bar and the service was genuine, pleasant and attentive. The owners also came over and said hello, and we noticed they went and did that with every table. What was nice was that they were very genuine, asking us questions about ourselves and obviously paying attention and listening. It was a nice old-school style approach to winning over and retaining a customer base. Would be nice if every business did that these days. The whole "Brickyard" area of Mansfield is really cool - hip, arty, nice redesign and repurposing of industrial architecture. Made me wonder what else I might be missing in this and other towns like it in Ohio. Hudson and Essex is an excellent restaurant, worthy of a day trip from Cleveland or Columbus just for dinner. The stroll around the Brickyard area on a warm night after dinner was also very nice. We will be back! read more

Great service, mediocre food that was overpriced. Honestly, the level of salt, grease, herbs, and other flavors was so much. What could have been an amazing filet was instead overwhelmed with pickled mushrooms and greasy potatoes with a lifetime supply of parsley. Less is more. Still gave it a 3. Had dinner here on a Saturday evening with some work friends. It had been recommended to us by others who live in town. My coworker was able to make a reservation and we were sat right when we got there. It is a beautifully modern yet rustic atmosphere and definitely more on the upscale rather than casual side. We did feel underdressed but of course nobody said anything which we appreciated. The owners stopped by our table to greet us which was also a nice touch. In terms of the food, it was quite delicious but it definitely is on the pricier side, smaller portions and fairly a lacarte. I started with the French onion soup, had the small filet and then finished with the chocolate espresso torte. Having got three courses, I was full but I would have needed the larger filet if I didn't get a starter. Other food sampled at the table which was further recommended were the ribeye, risotto, Brussels sprouts, and flatbread. My coworker did get a side house salad but it was VERY small and not a bit complex. The drink menu has a great selection. Being as I am currently expecting, I can't say how much I appreciated having mocktail options! My coworkers tried the Essex 75, pear martini and a glass of wine. I had the cucumber mint mule mocktail. All good! For dessert, we sampled the crème brûlée, chocolate espresso torte and sticky toffee pudding. Everyone was very pleased! The Sunday brunch is amazing! The building was built in 1928 by Hieber Motor Company who sold Hudson and Essex Motorcars. The building changed hands over the years until 2018 when it became Hudson and Essex, home to Cypress Hill Winery, a deli, an outdoor patio, underground caverns and the restaurant. I loved the wine selection and brunch menu. We ordered some wine samples to start and a glass of Gewurtztraminer and Petite Sirah. The Coastal Benedict (made with crab cake!) and Classic Benedict (with shaved ham!) were probably the best I've ever had. They were full of flavor, fresh and tasty. Fantastic food and service! We went for Sunday Brunch and asked about wine flights. Technically those are only available in the winery, which wasn't open. But then our relatively new server realized she could do samples, so we enjoyed trying out several of the wines and really loved them. I ordered the classic Benedict and my husband got the coastal Benedict. It's just the right amount of food. The best eggs Benedict I've had. The ham was grilled to perfection and the poached egg was perfectly runny. The coastal comes with a crab cake inside ham, and my husband really enjoyed it. The scenery was beautiful. We were downstairs in the basement but the upstairs as I noticed walking by was gorgeous as well food was really good and came out. Relatively quickly. Service was great. We walked in 30 minutes late of our reservation due to traffic and they had still held our table. We had a wonderful experience at Cypress Hill Winery and Hudson & Essex! The winery on the lower level hosts an extensive array of reds and whites. The dry Riesling, Grenache rosè and the Church Block red were our favorites. Ever had a fried olive stuffed with bleu goat cheese? Me neither...til now...and it's amazing! Salty. Crispy. Juicy. Tangy. Get the bread board! It comes with a massive dollop of the fluffiest citrus-infused butter you'll ever taste. Upstairs in the fine dining part, we were surprised with affordable, small shareable plates of high quality dinner options. We had the orrichete pasta, scallops, and crab cakes. I loved the small plate idea...no food was wasted and we got to try a little of everything. The deconstructed lemon merengue dessert was amazing, but the chocolate cake was a bit dense and one-note for us. It could've used a big creamy dollop of whip...and maybe some raspberries. The only thing I didn't like was the smoky campfire smell throughout the fine dining part of the restaurant. Our clothes and hair smelled very campfire-y when we got home. My boyfriend and I went here and really enjoyed our experience. The wine is actually really decently priced. We shared two appetizers, the meat and cheese board and the buffalo Mac and cheese and both were amazing. We both had a different steak dish, and while they were good, I would honestly recommend just getting a bunch of tapas and appetizers. I could not taste the Sriracha. The raspberry hibiscus margarita was not worth $13. I could barely taste any of the flavors noted in the description. Everything at this place was fantastic! The waiter was knowledgeable and able to answer all our questions and had good suggestions for us as well. We were a party of 4 and each got something different. Mine was the pork, which was moist inside and crunchy from the fried bread crumbs. The whipped sweet potato was very sweet and incredibly smooth! The others agreed that their meals were outstanding also (they ordered filet mignon, steak, and chicken). The bar looked like it had many other mixed drinks we didn't see on the menu, I will have to come back to try those another time! The only reason I give this 4 instead of 5 is because their options are almost non-existant for dairy allergies currently. All their sides for the dinner menu had buttermilk or heavy cream, and working around that was 'difficult', which is understandable. Unfortunately two of us tonight have dairy intolerance, so we weren't able to enjoy the sides as much. I would only take off half a star if I could, because the staff was still great despite this!
