We can even still recite the "ABCDE" characteristics to check for moles. Hers is the voice in my head that causes me to apply sunscreen daily and wear a hat throughout the year (and to admonish my family to do the same). Seriously. I find her to be very compassionate and accessible. The only downside is that she always seems to be running late, which might be more a symptom of the Montefiore system as that often seems to be the issue with my Montefiore doctors.

i went for an annual skin cancer screening a little over a week ago. A skin cancer screening is…read moresupposed to take at least 10 minutes and most of the time a lot longer. My regular dermatologist routinely checks all areas of my skin, inch by inch while wearing a light/magnifying apparatus on her head. She checks my entire body including scalp, ears, fingers, between toes, etc. My regular dermatologist also gives me time for any areas of concern. Dr. Yalowitz was very casual and dismissive in her 5 minutes (at most) skin cancer screening telling me "you're good" without examining 75% of my body. I now have to wait until February 2024 for my "annual" cancer screening with my regular dermatologist because I can't trust the diagnosis Dr. Yalowitz's made without checking most areas of my body. This is extremely disappointing and possibly dangerous.

I've noticed that when the wait is especially long, that Dr. Laufer has been a bit rushed in speaking with me, but his exams are still thorough. He has always kept an eye on anything unusual with my skin (apparently people in their 20s are not immune to melanoma) and he urges his patients to stop using indoor tanning booths. He's an interesting doctor - he's a vegan and I've followed some of what he does nutrition-wise (on my own accord, not because he told me to) and have noticed a significant improvement in my skin. He also converted his car, which originally ran on diesel, to run on filtered vegetable oil. So cool. He's awesome.
